I would think that at least a hunter would know what is going on
"As far as I can tell.......the residents of Idaho are leaving it up to the Game&Fish to handle the wolves and elk. I hope you are aware the game&fish are controlled by the government/tax payers. Dont you think your tax dollars should go further than pictures of fresh carcasses and a wolf count supplied by a government employee using a helicopter and field time?"
Since the introduction of the wolves in ID MT & WY, they have been listed on the endangered species list with the federal gov't. The feds wanted all three states to come up with good management plans to manage these wolves and they would release the endangered species classification and turn the wolf management over to the states. Id and MT had acceptable management plans that the feds liked but because WY wouldn't get over the (we don't want them and were going to treat them like predator) attitude the feds wouldn't delist them. After countless attempts by MT and ID's state gov'ts to get this changed, the feds finally delisted them with Wyoming being still managed by the feds. Well, long story short ... the pro wolfers have a federal judge in their pocketbook that recinded that decision because the decision was supposed to be made in conjunction with all three states........................so back again they went on the endangered species list AND until WY comes up with a viable management plan, ALL our elk and deer herds are declining. I hope you all get something going before we have to put our deer and elk on the endangered species list.
Now you have the basics of the situation.......but there is alot more involved than that, trust me!
See, our state F&G has their hands tied because the feds won't allow us to do anything.
My thoughts exactly,we have a cabin in the clearwater area and have seen over the past 5 years a steady incerase in the wolf population.I will admit the local cattlemen and farmers do a good job of keeping their population in check. Something needs to be done on a legal and larger scale to keep their pop in check (eradication sounds like a viable solution to me) to thin their numbers. Another suggestion is to "trans-plant" packs to Hollywood, New York, Berkley and any other place that these wackos live that think they are some cuddly furrry critter.
My only question would be, considering how society is now days, that even if WY comes up with a viable management plan, and the feds are willing to delist them, won't there be some rich greenie with no life that will file a lawsuit and we still won't have reached a conclusion to this?If the wolves start invading my country in S. WY, I'll take Nate's approach, I guarantee that!

The idea of introducing these wolves back into the ecosystem was a mistake that the federal government did because of influence from key people in Calif and back east. These people don't deal with this mistake on a daily basis (or at all for that matter) and are only concerned with the ego boost of knowing they got something done. We are the ones that are affected, not only through what it is destroying of our resources, but how it is reducing our means of livelyhood. Our small state derives a majority of it's revenue from recreation and this is not only being lost but also being doninated by a wild animal that is causing a fear to venture.
Conclusion????? That isn't something that will happen and right now something were not trying to achieve. The ability to manage these predators at a state level is at least a means of being able to maintain our other resources. Conclusion no, a means of survival for our livelyhoods and where our families are and were raised......hopefully!
I totally hear what you are saying, but I'm guessing that if a reasonable plan devised by the state is ok'd, some wacko in every one of these states will throw a fit and tie it up in court for a long time and we will never be able to take ANY action. Just my $0.05, you can keep the "change".![]()
When states get management from the Feds, it is becasue they are being delisted from the ESA. When this happens, many of the legal grounds that the greenies base thier lawsuits on evaporate. That opens up the ability for the states to manage as they see fit, so long as they stay withing thier Fed-reviewed, pre-approved management plans.
You are absolutely correct that the Ralphie Maughans of the world will not stop their yapping, but the ability of them to stop us having an open season on the wolves will be much more difficult.
Take last week's coyote hunt in my old hometown of Challis, Idaho for example. Once the cooks got wind of this they were outraged and flooded Maughan's website with all sorts of crazy ideas. However, since this tournament was on sound legal footing they were limited to biatching about it to the Chamber of Commerece and threatening the boycott the town and sporting goods store (The Bent Rod) that sponsored it. Like they would ever spend money in a store that sells guns anyway.
You can bet that next year, the Bent Rod is going to use this free publicity to their advantage, and you will see twice the number of folks sign up.
You can read the biatching here: http://wolves.wordpress.com/2009/02...-condemn-challis-coyote-killing-“tournament”/
so now let me get this strait, does Canada have a shortage of these Canadian wolves?
If not then they are not an endangered species correct?
so how the F did a non endangers species get on the list?
this is the part i don't understand!
