Who's brave enough to ride with no helmet?

Been riding toys for over 30 years.

I always ride with a helmet.

I know from looking at the damage to helmets when I wrecked in years past is testimony for me.

I have less scars and brain injuries from wearing safety equipment.
Maybe saved a few brain cells.

I have even split a helmet in half like a coconut from nothing more than whipping of the vehicle and slamming to the ground.
The helmet saved my head from splitting open like a coconut.

Professionally, as a physical therapist, I support people wearing helmets! When they wreck they often become my patients! ;) Those who don't usually make more business for the mortician and/or ICU!

I don't think there has been a ride go by where I haven't been grateful to have my helmet on! Either from the branches I push through, to bouncing it off of stuff to plain ole it is nice and warm. A helmet goes right up there with a beacon for me, don't have one, no ride.

To those that don't wear one, man, I can't say I agree with your rationale (go through the same arguement w/ beacons).... but I guess to each their own right? But with beacons, if you don't have one, you don't ride w/ me. Never been put in that position over a helmet.

I don't think logged miles has anything to do w/ it.... maybe terrain? There again though, the terrain I ride would require a helmet... (trees).

It's called natural selection, the dumbest will get weeded out. I do find it fascinating that the majority of helmetless riders I see are on a Arctic Cat....hmmm....;):beer;

It does amaze me that people out there ride without helmets. There was a guy out here in colorado killed snowmobiling last year, guess he had a ski helmet on rather than a real one. Way to be.

Only time I don't wear mine is when i'm loading/unloading, and even then I probably should. I don't ride without helmet, tekvest, and knee guards; but personally the tekvest is my #1 piece of equipment. Surprises me that more people don't wear them.

I was at Mt. Adams today and saw more people riding without a helmet that with one...I would guess I saw 30 without and 20 with. Granted it was 60+ and beautiful and I was roasting all day but c'mon, these guys (and one girl) were highmarking each other on hill after hill. Of course no beacons or avy gear of any kind and usually at least three on the hill at the same time with the rest parked in the runout area.

So this brings me to the question. If you think you are bulletproof enough to ride an unstable slope with virtually no protection, do you think others should put themselves in harms way to help you when things go wrong?

It kind of sounds like a cold hearted way to look at things but I and the people I ride with do everything we can to prepare ourselves for the worst possible situation. What do you all think?

you like helmets? good for you. you don't want to help when things "go wrong"? than dont.

what other people wear is not your business!
some guys wear a tech vest and knee guards, they might think that you are irresponsible if you don't. what if you were in trouble and I wouldn't help becouse you weren't wearing a neck brace?:face-icon-small-win

I can't believe there are people out there riding without.....
mouth guards, body armor, cup, steel toes, safety glasses, hearing protection etc. I guess they are just tempting fate & natural selection!:D

If I ever have to dig out an avy victim, & he doesn't have all of the formentioned protective gear, I will cover him back up & leave!

Geez Maf put down the crack pipe. I hope you never have to go thru what I did when I landed on my best friend at the sand dunes. He was in a coma 6 weeks almost died would have for sure without the hard hat. I've never had a day change my life like that one did. So if I want to suggest peeps are better off to wear a helmet Im gonna and I dont give a $hit about what ever popular club you have anxiety about. I still ride with 2 old timers who dont wear them. Its their choice I just tell them every time we leave Im not telling your kids...Feel free to stir all the Internet chit ya want for the sake of entertainment but you are a COMPLETE fool to think helmets dont save lives.

Kev,
you need to read posts before making yourself look foolish like this.
I posted multiple times in this thread that helmets were a good idea.
So just settle down, re-read all of the replies so you understand the meaning of them, then come on back & reply rationally.
I know you are smarter than this, 'cuz most of your posts do make sense.

Feel free to stir all the Internet chit ya want for the sake of entertainment

You are correct there.
My remarks were meant to incite replies such as yours for the sake of entertainment.:D
BUT I do stand by them.

10K sled.....can't afford a $100 helmet

I have no idea what circumstance would justify one to go on a ride of any length without a helmet.

But I'm confident that not being able to afford one would never play into it.

sure you should wear a helmet highmarking but where do you draw the line.
if you go over 10 mph, your an idiot?no airbag...idiot?the safest place in sitting home on your couch.

No way, I live right under the flight path for MSP airport. Sometimes I hear them pretty low and I kind of think, well is this what it sounds like?

I didn't wear a helmet on my bycicle when I was a kid, but I make my kids wear a helmet and pads when they ride their bikes. I love them to much to have something happen to them and I dont know if I could live with myself if I lost one of them and I could have prevented it.

Kind of thinking about this one. I'm sure all our parents loved us just as we would our own kids and with that we didn't wear helmets. It's society, not the protection they give when it comes to bicycles and skateboards and so on. I don't want to sound like a heathen but seeing how were trying to keep our kids in a protective bubble these days is getting out of control. Bumps and bruises alert kids that doing things wrong will hurt them, this way they are prepared for the bumps and bruises in life. Just look at how many kids now days don't play dodge ball because of someone thinking they are going to get injured.

Sorry, it's just my thoughts. If it's motorized and the slighest bit powerfull a helmet should be worn. (Golf carts, mopeds, and segways are the exception)

I'm off the soap box now. If I have kids I'm sure some of this will come back to haunt me.

I seen a guy on his quad today, his little kid had on a helmet but he didn't:confused:, I don't understand.

I always wear a helmet and make my kids, if they don't want to wear it they don't ride.

What about strapping your helmet?? Need a thread about that again :beer;:p

Not wearing a helmet is dumb but to each their own :eek:

I was just thinking that same thing. The straping on deal. So many movies show how all of them don't and I just think what a bunch of idiots, why wear one if you aren't going to properly put it on?
