Who's brave enough to ride with no helmet?

I was at Mt. Adams today and saw more people riding without a helmet that with one...I would guess I saw 30 without and 20 with. Granted it was 60+ and beautiful and I was roasting all day but c'mon, these guys (and one girl) were highmarking each other on hill after hill. Of course no beacons or avy gear of any kind and usually at least three on the hill at the same time with the rest parked in the runout area.

So this brings me to the question. If you think you are bulletproof enough to ride an unstable slope with virtually no protection, do you think others should put themselves in harms way to help you when things go wrong?

It kind of sounds like a cold hearted way to look at things but I and the people I ride with do everything we can to prepare ourselves for the worst possible situation. What do you all think?

This thread should be titled..... "who is STUPID enough to ride with no helmet"

have seen it a few times on sleds but go to the sand dunes there is way more w/o helmets. I don't get it. but to each there own. I guess if everybody had common sense who would we talk about on here

I wouldn't even consider riding without one. We were in Cooke a few years ago and our group was stopped having a snack. Along comes a guy looking for his group and riding without a helmet. He stopped to ask if we'd seen his guys so we asked him about the no helmet thing. He responded with "I lost in an avy yesterday and didn't feel like buying a new one today"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The same old story. He was stuck and somebody in his group went to highmark him WHILE HE WAS STILL ON THE HILL and they started the slide. He was buried up to his chest and didn't have his helmet on while digging out.

Pretty sure if I was in an avy large enough to loose items it would be the end of riding for a few days. Either big balls or no brains.

Waddya gonna do???

That's crazy. I use my helmet when I go ATV riding and it's 100 degrees out. No matter the helmet it's not for warmth it's main thing is protection!

What a bunch of tools.

I ride without one, :) Learn to ride responsibly and don't be stupid. Only way I see that a helmet would save your noggin is riding on ice.

Ain't nothing brave about not wearing your helmet, this is just plain RETARDED. Nature will take it's course one way or another with these idiots, I believe the term is natural selection!!

And or "Nature Weeding Out The Stupid"!!!

Just went to a funeral a week ago of an 18 year old girl, no seat belt on, black ice in Montana,
thrown from truck, crushed from chest up, very sad and heart breaking!!!

Good Luck

Always good to see a fellow willing to tempt natural selection. Or as the religious right folks would call it...Intellegent design.

So what most of you are saying is.....it is foolish to not where a helmet when it could reduce the risk of injury.
It makes sense, but how far do you take it?
When driving on an icy road, you know the risk is higher of having an accident.
So naturally it would be safer to where a helmet in this situation.
How many here do just that? None of course.
But I think you get my point.
We could go into the whole "helmet while motorcycling" debate if we want also.
To each his own.

BTW, 99.9% of the time, my lid is on. It has saved my life once already!

Thinin' out the herd, so they say. The only time I have been guilty of not wearing a helmet while riding is loading my sled in the truck, but of course that is stupid, you could easily get injured doing that also. To each his own, yes. But I wouldn't want to put my family through feeding me and changing my diaper for the rest of my life.
Always wear your helmet, and any saftey gear for that matter, and I am going to be the next advocate for Tek vests since I hit a creek bed this year and snapped my bars off with my chest. I am still hurting from that. You only have one life to live, have fun, but protect your arse, family and friends count on you to do ride responsibly.

So are you the same group that wear helmets when riding your harley? Or should I say would you wear a freaking helmet if you had a Harley?:beer;

My father has a story he liked to tell when I was much younger about him and a buddy riding motorcycles/dirt bikes years ago a long a dried up creek bed. Anyway, they were riding slow and my father was bucked off his bike when he hit a rock. He landed head first in the creek bed and cracked his helmet in half on a large rock. The helmet saved his life without a doubt. He still has the helmet sitting in his shop. I plan on showing my children the same helmet and passing on the story. As much as it can "suck" at times, I choose to wear my helmet each and every ride. My children will do the same.

For those of you that choose not to wear a helmet, Please be careful.
