Who will carry a spare drive belt now on the '13?

I kinda disagree with you polzin. The harley's may not be jumping with the tires spinning, but I have seen quite a few idiots dumping the clutches with motor at it's redline! I've seen the transmissions and motors let go but never a belt. Just a thought.

Polaris' QuickDrive belt system saves weight, boosts perfprmance

A lot of great comment's everyone!:yo:
I will buy one, but I'll leave it in the truck. At this point I believe you have a better chance wrecking your A-arms or track before breaking that belt. As far as ice and sticks getting in there? How would they get in there? It's never been an issue with CVT drive systems and they have been around for 50+ years. If the owners manual does say change at 2000 miles I would bet that belt would handle 250%-300% of that. They are just covering their tail.

There is an excellent article by Olav Aaen in the latest American Snowmobiler
2013 buyers guide page 72.
Most of your concerns are addressed in that article.
:yo:

Bought a driveshaft belt today. $249.00! And it comes in a box that says do not open until install. I guess they go stale or something. Another part for the trailer I guess.

I bet they blow those belts like the blow motors haha jk. I will say I'm super jealous of the belt drive and hope cat pulls there head from there arse and puts one in cause I dont wanna spend 1250 for an aftermarket one! And if they don't I will be riding a pro!

Had a cmx belt drive on an 06 rev. Bought the better belt to run and was about $120. Bought the cheaper $80 one for a spare. Never used it in 4000 miles. Jumped it a million times with the throttle on when landing and no issues. Everybody is overthink this belt thing. I guess I would think about how long you were keeping the sled before I bought one. Especially if they are $250. If you were an unlucky one and broke a belt you would want a spare, but I bet that is really rare. I'm not buying one.

anyone with a belt drive motorcycle have a belt snap???

A colleague of my here in Sweden "snapped" a belt on his Yamaha Road Warrior but think he had made 70000 kilometers (7000 metric mile) on that bike at that time.

I´m not worried about the beltdrive, maby that I´ll buy a spare if/when going to the US and find it cheap ;)
Am not going to have one in the backpack while I drive.

CMX had the Brake on the bottom shaft also. the way polaris has it on the top small sprocket is a bad idea. lots of force applied to a small surface area.

I talked to the Pol rep about that at the first day of public inveil at Seeley Lake, MT on that Sat, Feb 11th.

I asked why not put the brake rotor down on the drive shaft instead of on the jackshaft.

He asked why?

I talked about that very thing. Torque on the smaller gear, etc. PLUS the brake on the jackshaft will still stop the sled if the belt were to break.

He truly wrinkled his forehead like he had honestly never thought of the braking issue and stopping.

Wouldn't it be less force on the pullies than with a chain? The chaincase gears are smaller and narrower than the belt drive gears...and they have a smaller surface area to absorb the force.

Can I invent a term here...torque surface distribution? LOL

Polaris only spends about $25 to buy those QuickDrive system belts. BUT what are charging the consumer?

Scott..I bet they pay more then that...Work had a drill rig that ran a gates poly chain belt(mini blower belt), they ran about 150 ea for the belts..but in 6 yrs of drilling holes for 4-12 hrs a day..it was still on the original belt..these belts are far far tougher then guys want to admit(I read somewhere that the belt poo uses is double the tensile strength of the hyvo chain they have been using...)

These look like the belts that they have on Harleys, I had 65000 miles on my Ultra Classic when we changed tires and seen about 4 small holes in it and a bunch of rocks in it that were about ready to push through also and make more holes?? My mechanic told me not to waste money on a new one because they are bullet proof, and he seen ones that were 10 times worse than mine and they never changed those, and thats on a 980lb bike.:face-icon-small-ton

Willie Davidson has a bike hanging above his desk by one of these belts that's cut half way through. I would say they are pretty tuff!

I ride a 2012 Pro with a CMX belt drive and a Power Addiction 1100cc engine. I have had no problems with the belt. Trust me they are much stronger and more forgiving then you think. Just because it is light and flimsy feeling in your hand does not mean it is week. I will not be carrying an extra.

Belts are probably made by same manufacturer Gates or someone in the belt business.
Never carried a spare for a blown big block etc. More weight/ HP / TRQ abuse some would say.

Same thing if you broke your chain, no brakes.

I agree.
According to the engineers........
The Polaris drive-belt can withstand 35,000 lbs of pull before it breaks. The most your going to pull on that belt is around 2000 lbs. That's 6% of what the belt can take before it breaks. I am not worried.:face-icon-small-coo
I don't know what a chain will handle but I bet it wouldn't handle 35,000 lbs. And I have never broken a chain. Well a rock did but that's a different story.:face-icon-small-con
