I tried the sledding backpacks and found them lacking in different ways. Primarily, wouldn't hold up to a lot of abuse. Anyway, went to a snowboarder/skier pack last season and loved it. Overstuffed with gear it held up great to last season. Plenty big enough for everything you might need to carry.

ive been thinking about this but never looked into it
the only question i have is is there a pocket where i could get to my shovel fast or would i have to dig through everything in a bigger pocket?

It actually has a separate pocket for shovel and probe, handle has holder between outer side pocket and main body of pack. Quick and easy to get to all of it.

Do your buddy a favor and get a metal shovel. Plastic shovels aren't the best for digging through avy debris.

Definitly agree with this one. Broke several and it sucks. Get the metal one
