Where to ride near Layton Utah?

Where is a good place to ride that has some open areas to take the family for a fun day in the snow? I am not familiar with this area and have heard that at Monte Cristo you have to ride roads for a while to get past all of the private property.

With a family, Monte really is you're best bet. Private property really hasn't been an issue so far. Respect their property as you're passing through and it'll stay that way. Just make damn sure there is a good base, there's lots of fence posts and rocks that love to eat early season riders.

Good luck

not so, riding right off the parking lot. Easy riding for the entire fam...

It's true that for groomed start and then off trail that Monte isn't bad to get too from Layton.

But Bountiful is closer for true off trail and backcountry riding as well. Check into it when the season gets into full swing and the snow is low enough.

Farmington Canyon is the back door of Layton but I understand the canyon remains closed this season as the road hasn't been fixed from last springs slide. With effort the Farmington side of the mountain can be accessed from the Bountiful side. We've been doing it since the '70's.

Is that up Skyline? Where do you park the vehicles?

Farmington will stay closed for who knows how long? It won't be any time soon. We'll be lucky to get up there next winter. I've been trying like hell to set up a service project and donate my time and equipment, but no go. They won't even let the avation crew clear it. Still trying though.

Bountiful's going to see alot of pressure this year, please please don't give the forest service any reason to shut it down as well. If this winter's anything like last year, then that road WILL have problems as well. We all know how they and (most of) the nearby homeowners feel about us, don't give them any ammunition.

I have more info on Farmington canyon but don't want to type a book, if you're interested pm me.
