Where to Ride in Co right now.

Yup. Worlds largest flat-topped mountain. Right on the edge of the desert. Nothing to see here. Just keep moving south to the San Juans. Everyone knows that you can sled to the top of all those big pretty peaks. And no avy danger there either.
Just gentle rolling hills and no snow here on the mesa.

Remember........Mesa flat.......San Juans BIG...........mesa flat............San Juans.BIG............mesa flat..............San Juans...........BIG........

No, no, no, by all means ride the Mesa. I would prefer you stay home if you are scared anyway.

For something like the fifth time...I was just trying to offer an alterntive. I personally prefer the riding in the Cimmarons and San Juans. I have ridden the Mesa a bunch, and I have ridden to the south a bunch. I'm not sure why you Mesa guys get so defensive, again, just offering and alternative.

The offer stands if anybody wants to see some of the San Juans with a group that rides it a bunch.

There is more to riding than just kicking on the turbo to see who can climb the biggest hill! :face-icon-small-dis

This just goes to show how little you know about the area to your south. Owl Creek pass is groomed for 20 miles. There are dozens of wide open meadows to ride, we take beginners up there all of the time. Then, if you so desire, there are some seriously big climbs, the likes of which the Mesa can't offer. There are trees, benches, creek bottoms, plenty of entertainment for all.

I've been all over the Mesa, and lets face it, even a bad day of riding is better than a good day at work. Given the choice between driving and hour to the Mesa, or an hour to the San Juans, I know which way I am going. :face-icon-small-coo

Uh oh.............now we're scared! :face-icon-small-con

What is a guy to think? I don't see any posts even suggesting that you have ridden the San Juans, outside of Lake City. Why not give it a try? I have ridden the Mesa, I still like the southern mountains better. Isn't that OK with you guys? Different strokes for different folks right?

I am happy for you. I think it is great you have met your needs on the Mesa.

I still think it would be hard to dispute that the San Juans offer the bigger steeper climbs. When I am feeling frisky, I like to have that option.

I've branched out to Cumbres/Chama, Wolf Creek/South Fork, Lake City, Rabbit Ears, Flat Tops, Kebler/Crested Butte, and a couple others that I won't mention here. Is that branched out enough?

Oh Ouray, you're so silly! If you know so much about the San Juans, then you'd know that Cumbres and Wolf Creek and South Fork and Lake City are ALL in the San Juans, and I've ridden Owl Creek as well as Little Cimarron..........So yes, I've had tons of time riding in the San Juans. And you are correct, they are incredible without a doubt. But like you said...given the choice..........and seeins' how I'm scared........:lips:

The OP wanted to know about riding near Grand Junction. GM is a 45min drive. No brainer.

All I was trying to do was offer an alternative...something that seems to have been completely overlooked. It isn't that much further to Ridgway.

As long as it is getting all wild in here...I THINK GRAND MESA IS FOR SISSIES!

Hows that for stirring up the pot?:jaw:

Call me one of the sissies. I like to smoke down the groomed roads at 85mph +. Like trail riding too. My brother though is a boondocker for the last 30 years, and said Grand Mesa was best he had seen outside of West Yellowstone.

One night following him in Idaho he stuck us down in a ravine so bad he had to get his saw (yes he carries a saw...lol) and cut us a way out.

Not trying to add fuel to the fire, just pointing out that describing Grand Mesa as flat terrain riding is REAL wrong.

You are more than welcome to come and park at Thunder Mountain Lodge which is 1/2 mile east of the Visitor Center on Hwy 65. Park and ride right from the lot and hospitality to boot. You will enjoy the GRAND MESA even if it is for sissies. LOL.

Thanks for all of your help. I didn't mean to start a fight between the south and the north!! I ride the snowies for no I-70 traffic, the parking may be a little difficult but once you get back there, we never see anyone, people do not want to leave the trail too far!!! We are thinking either Grand Mesa or Kebler Pass. Thanks again for all the input.
-If we go to Grand Mesa, where is a good spot to park, and ride from? I like to boondock, I love the trees.

Thanks again
