Where can a guy get a regular 2.5 gal gas can..

I have looked everywhere, and I can't find a decent gas can to mount to my sled. All the ones I have found are the new "Blitz" brand cans. They are a weird shape, with an odd handle location, that would be difficult to strap to your sled. All I want is your old trusty 2.5 gal. can. Some are kind of triangular in shape while others are more rectangular with the handle in the top middle and a relatively low profile.

I know there are some great companies like craigger and mountain addiction that make gas cans w/ mounting systems, but I'm not interested in shelling out $50+ for a gas can/rack unless I absolutely have too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Reese

You have to really look around some times. I stoped at every auto parts place I could find, wallmart, gas station, etc, etc.... for a week before I found one. I bought all 4 that they had. I didn't want to spend $30 for a polaris one. then went and found straps since bungee cords do not work. They are too forgiving in the big bumps. The can bounces all over the place untill it falls off. Would have ben cheaper and less time wasted to of just bought a polaris one.
polaris makes one that will work with pretty much every aftermarket or stock gas rack.

I had the same issue. Went to 5 different stores and ALL carried the Blitz container. Finally found the one I use now from Checker Auto Parts (not Blitz but forgot the name)

heh, i've been lookin for the same thing. I have one of the blitz ones, and it is shaped funny. Decent for packing in the truck, but not so much for packing on the sled.

Also, the Polaris ones are discontinued (Or that's what I was told by Vickery...)

I hear yah, I was looking for the same thing last year, they are all taller instead of wider now. I ended up finding a good shape one at a yard sale. Or I thought of using two of the lower one gallon ones they have?? Maybe someone else knows where to get a lower profile one?

Yea, I stopped in at the local polaris dealer, guy said polaris wanted everyone (dealers) to stock them but they didn't. Now they don't make them any more.

Here is a pic of the one I got from Checker Autoparts (Not Blitz). Much better for tie down than the Blitz. Sorry, don't have a better pic at work...

I've got one like the one in the picture above that I picked up from Canadian Tire last year. I strap it to the rack of my Renegade. It didn't cost much.

holz has these...

Is it like this one? for $24.95. I'll need to look around here some more and see what I can turn up. Any other ideas or input is welcome. Thanks for your help guys.

I got a dumb question. The sled i have now is the first one with a gas can rack on it that i have owned. I guess out here on the flat land we usualy fill up at the beginnging of the day and by the time night comes around or we are tired we head home never had to use one. How many time have you had to use that little can to get back home. Seems to me that if your far enuf out that you run out of gas that little can wont get you all the way home. I have never been to the mountains so i dont know what its like. Can you enlighten me on this one

Used it several times. Fuel comsumption in the mountians is higher then in flatland. I can get around 80 miles in flatland MN riding but when I was in the Snowies pushing nipple deep snow I was lucky to get 45 miles on a tank. Obviously has to do with how hard you work the machine. Sometime riding with friends we will just dump both gas caddys into one sled ride as far as we can, when the sled runs out of fuel that we didn't put gas in we just pull it out. Granted only did this once on a rare case but yeah you just have to watch your fuel level and most times you can get back out with the fuel that was in spare tank.

From your title:

You can only get them for unleaded as regular is a thing of the past. ;)

Travy - We've used them numerous times over the years. Never in a critical situation though, like way out in the boonies because we watch our fuel levels pretty close. I also like to have extra fuel to extend my range when needed. Sure is a nice feeling to empty it into the tank after a few hours and be back to nearly a full tank.

Oh ya, and I love my Rubbermaid/Gott 2.5 gal can but can't find them anywhere in the last few years. It has a low profile stable base.

packing extra gas

Yeah, we've used them on more than one ocassion in the Snowies. When you're out in the wilderness with no gas stations: "it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".;) I found a couple of the "older-low-profile" cans at garage sales. One brand was a Briggs & Stratton brand 2.5 gallon tank. I still use it. I noticed a couple seasons ago that all the newer cans were taller. I wonder if Uncle Sam had some new specs for cans to protect us from ourselves?:p

I was walking threw Menards a few weeks ago and seen they had just put out a whole rack of the old style "square style" there. I have looked for 3 years to find those...I bought 5 of them for $2 a piece
