Whats your biggest repair job in the field

Left side drive bearing went out, banged a bogie wheel bearing on to get it home.

This happened to me last year on my apex but it had a sleepover on the hill came up with a new bearing the next day.

Not the biggest repair job but my buddies IQR ate a reed pedal on the mountain and it was a struggle to get out of where we were, so just for sh!ts we traced out the pedal on an old pair of Smith goggles I had and cut it out with a mini leatherman. Screwed it to reed body(VF reeds) and no joke, it ran on both cylinders all the way off the mountain to within about 1/2 mile of the parking lot before it finally ate the goggle reed pedal.

Scott:
20 miles without a wp belt? Not on a Polaris I hope. That also turns the oil pump and you would do some major damage in 20 miles if it lasted that long.

I sucked a huge through my carbs once.

Huge what? :eek:

I assume it was a nut holding a nitrous nozzle in. Same thing happened to me, except I caught it laying the reed cage. We stopped and I popped open a side panel to toss my goggles inside to warm up and saw the nitrous nozzle hanging there. OH CHIT.... Pulled the carb and reed boot and there it was, sitting on top if one of the reeds.

I should have bought lottery tickets that day.

a guy that i know was rejetting and lost a c-clip from one of the needle jets, went under the motor. Pretty much pulled the whole thing to get it. One of those things that you never would think would happen and then it does

I used to carry spares in my wallet and one day a guy shot his out into the snow somewhere and he says...."hey you got those clips still?" I said "yeah and I will sell you one for a hundred" LOL...Priceless:beer;

back in the old days i swapped a piston on the phazer we did that a couple of times on a buddys "race prepped" TXL 340

I have been a part in a couple motor swaps back on the summit x 670 days. Used sticks as trailing arms.. other than that not much recently. Once blew a chain on a Polaris which was a 13 wide about 68 long and I was riding with some cats and one of them had a spare 15 by 74. Put it on, tightened it as far as I could and rode. It out with no cover on the chaincase. Not good.

I was riding with an ex-coworker who had an old 800 storm with some pipes that were welded piss poor. The pipes started breaking the welds and forming some nice 6-7" cracks. Needless to say, the motor ran like **** from lack of back pressure. When we noticed the cracks in the pipes, we were near some old fencing. Since none of us had any mechanics wire, I cut some of the fence wire and we wrapped it around the pipes over some heat tape taken from the inner hood. Twisted the ends up to sinch it down enough to close the cracks up and off we went. This wasn't a life or death situation by any means but being aware of the resources available to you at the time and knowing how to use those resources to your advantage is a very valuable asset in times of distress...
Great stories, keep 'em coming!!

I've been a part of a complete engine swap that was fun and a broken steering rod that we had to pull the motor out to get the steering out but my biggest project was this:

Last year we went for a ride, got clear back to where the big stuff starts, about 15 miles from the parking lot of straight boondocking and some pretty gnarly hills, when I lost a drive shaft bearing. Was in the middle of climbing a steep hill when the bearing went out, let the drive shaft rotate and the chain fall off. Rolled back down the hill no brakes about 10 feet before I was able to angle it a little and stick it in a tree (looking back the sled had full coverage I probably shouldn't have done such a good job of saving it);). Got it all tore down and the bearing was so bad we couldnt get it off the drive shaft. So had to haul out the drive shaft to cut the bearing off, and the broken chaincase. Riding double with my dad through some scary stuff. Got home late that night spent most of the night trying to round up a bearing, tools, chaincase, oil and a bunch of other stuff. Went back up the next day and did an assembly job on the side of a steep hill. Took us a couple hours to get it all together but we rode the rest of the day. But the fun part was the bearing we put in was old and not great so had to tear it down and put a new bearing in as soon as I got home. Then that bearing went out a couple weeks later so in less than a month I had changed that drive shaft bearing 3 different times. At least the 2nd two were warm :)

Had to change a drive shaft 25 miles back over a couple of mountain ranges
Made skinny brake pucks work by shaving down the calipers with a file
:beer;

Blew a belt on the F7 and it took out my coolant hose to the heat exchanger, that was under the left foot well. Lucky, we had cell service and I called my brother in law and asked him to meet my wife at the parking lot with different sizes of tubing..hose clamps and coolant. My wonderful wife rode her sled out and back to my sled and then I had to do some interesting maneuvers to reach the hose and put the splice in. It worked great and I was very happy that technologies and good family saved my bacon. :beer;

Had to repair smart valves in the wife's sled on the side of a mountain by sticking my hands in the gas tank....was only about 3 degrees out side :eek: Being the wonderful woman she is...my wife started a fire for me to warm my frozen hands.:)
