What's Happening To Big Bores?

Ya know even those spring days, snow is hard to start then get slushy your pulling a chute with no turn out almost straight up ski kicks a glob of snow and it dumps right on the clutches even with the guard on.... lake ann 2002 my tailbone hurt for 8 months I rode out wit a strap holding my seat and a screwdriver for handlebars... man that sucked. Oh well just another great memory :-)

If you ride hard in the spring the only way to avoid belt issues is to ditch the hoods and or side panels. We do alot of 50 to 70 degree snowmobiling in April, May and June. The hoodless sleds ran the pants off all those who weren't yesterday. One other thing I've noticed over the years is the larger cc, bigger HP machines don't need to be as spot on to run well. Springtime heat can really kill an 800 that isn't spot on. My 900 runs fairly well whether it's ON or missing a couple hundred R's.
Spring rides are a real hoot but there were a couple guys on the mountain yesterday that probably wished they would have stayed home. Follow the tracks in the second picture, some dude veared right, then left into the rock in the narrows, had a terrible wreck. Another fella got thumped by his sled as it rolled out of death bowl.

Will be there this weekend myself and TS...throw me a PM if you will be in the area

I agree on the power burst (or just torque) of the BB 2strokes. My turbo hits hard after its lit but nailing it from a dead stop and its NOTHING compared to the grunt of the 1200! which has the power anytime you want it!

1200wc, most reliable NA HP dollar for dollar PERIOD! 240hp pump gas all day long!!!!!!

mattymac, you need a front mount turbo on that apex, I have raced 3 1200 wc tripples and numerous 900 cats and none of them got me out of the hole at 12lbs boost on my 04 RX1 Alpine.

Well the hardest hitting turbo outta the hole Ive been on was a Nytro BD turbo 14lbs no head shim and although it was really close it still wouldnt get my 1200 outta the hole.

BTW, gunna prolly get a BD sidemount with the RB3 controller, suposed to be the best fuelie controller out there, especially for bottom end with the timing advancement on the bottom then pulling it back with boost! Also I think the hotstart/stutter button making MANY MANY lbs of boost (some are getting double digit boost #'s with no load on the motor) should help some for getting going on the bottom! Reverse turbo lag!!!!!!!

Sounds like fun, 1200 is 2 hours away from pulling the trigger but the kids in my small engine class have been doing alot of the work so I wan tto let them be present when we pull the trigger.

It is really fun for the kids and they learn lots, I try to have at least one big project that is my own for them to work on but it has been a disaster at times. You have to check everything that they do or pay the price. I have a pretty good group this year and the build up to firing the 1200 is really a gas to watch.
When I started the class we did lawn mowersbut heck here everyone rides sleds so we changed the class a little :-)

What's tough on the aftermarket guys trying to offer big bore kits for the current sleds is all the electronic fuel/timing/accessory programing etc built into the sleds. Even 4 or 5 years ago a good machinist and engine tuner could wup up better aluminum cylinders and pistons, jockey some brass around in the fuel delivery and have a 30 or 40 hp better motor.

Today you need to add a programing guru that can breakdown a much more complex operating system, sort out the issues and build a little black box with perameter to accomodate different air flow/fuel demands etc. A huge leap forward in expense and R & D compared to machining aluminum billets into aftermarket cylinders. Now cyl/pistons/head are going to be the cheap part of the hop up.

Too bad, but the older chassis just plain suck when It comes to handling, left in the dust by advancing technology.

still some worth it

i love turbos but 100% race gas is expensive, that said i built two m1000 based 1200's this year with nitros and have been very impressed with the performance, reliability (no probs. at all) and cost is reasonable. yea the big bores have trouble with good running turbos at 10000' BUT with the new pump fuel turbo kits, the big bores are cheaper to build we do use 20% race gas but i would bet that the good runnin big bores will run with or out run the pump gas kits, so maybe big bores are not totally a thing of the past.

I posted that my 1200 would whoop up on alot of 2ST's at fairview and everyone wanted to lynch me! My turbo was faster but not QUICKER!!!!!! Like everyone else's 2sTurbo. I would get alot of them outta the hole bad enough that within an 1/8th mile up the hill many of them couldnt run me down! And this is at 10K feet! At 5K feet where I ride my 1200 is a totally diffrent animal!

I think its a real toss up between the 1200WC and a Turbo 4 stoke. That big bore is probably one of if not the most reliable big bore out there and it works. I dont like the wiesco kits because I have seen so much havoc with cold seize but these big bore kits that use cast pistons are the way to go.Matty, what do you figure yours has for horse power and have you ever rode with 1200psi (Brad ) ?

The 1200 WC isnt really a big bore though? Its just the right combo of polaris factory parts. Mine has been bulletproof so far but know of a few really high mileage motors (10Kplus and 3 chassis later of 1 in particular) still goin strong.

As for wursten I met up with him in Utah this year on his turbo 700 and he said it himself, "next year ill build another WC" He was still working on it (1st or 2nd time out) Last he told me that it does haul azz at 16-18lbs of boost!

Thats why they are so reliable, all factory parts. The reason I asked if you rode with Brad was I raced him 5 times and got him 4 out of 5 out of the hole and we both had the same tracks. It was close and it was at 5000 ft so at 2000 ft he would have got me.

Those yammi's get it thats for sure, but prolly 90% of 2s turbos run under 14lbs and at anything less than 7K feet my 1200 will get em bad enough outta the hole that it takes a long time to catch and pass me, I have done it numerous times.

Gunna try a powderlites kit from dave on my apex next year with the RB3, and stutter button! Should be interesting to say the least!!

I think that is the way to go, Dave has been playing with turbo's for decades and really knows his stuff. The rapid bike box is a cool tuning feature that I wish I could use on mine.
