What is good grass hay worth I got a super clean field of all grass hay 5 acres or so. I have no use for the hay so I was just curious what is the best thing to do with it??? Should a guy rent some old haying swather and bailer or what can you get to just have someone else hay it and take the hay???

You're probably money ahead to have somebody come and hay it for you. If you rent a swather and a tractor and bailer, you're on the hook for fuel, twine, and repairs to said swather and bailer when they break down (and they will).

well mid winter hay prices were at $200 a ton in the Flathead valley, but Summer hay last year we paid $85/ton

So, who knows with the fuel prices, and who knows with what the hay yield will be, as the winter prices were heavily impacted by the price of fuel and a shortage of hay from eastern Montana...So, it is anybodies guess right now...

Hay prices will be pretty high this year. If you can get it done for that 21 an acre and 1 to bale it, I would take that. The midwest will be short of hay this year and our area buys a lot of hay from the west, so it will drive the prices up.

Price will determine on the quality of the hay. If it's certified weed free, or GOOD quality timothy, etc. I paid $150.00 per ton for VERY good timothy 2 months ago, just because of the long winter here and the shortage of alfalfa hay.

Your situation, I for one wouldn't bother with it, as fuel prices, repairs, rent of epuipment, water, fertilizer, swathing, baling, stackin and storage, etc., could bite ya in the butt at the end of the day. But it's still your call at the end of the day. If you work it right some hay buyers will come and do things themselves, as in you only have to water and maintain the crop, and they do the rest. I for one would look that direction before renting epuipment.

Just my .01 cent ( I'm too cheap for .02 cent, it's a fuel thing:()

here in washington it was $230 delieved for Alfafa on the west side, first cutting is coming off right now and its going to be $$$$$$ 335 per ton in my barn

its stupid here in cali, my father supplies hay for 6 high end race tracks (calexpo, hollywood park, san anita, and others) hes getting about 280 per ton for good mountain hay. The broker he supplies is selling it for around 25.00 per bale (100lb bale= 500 per ton)

HOLY HE!! Matty, that's plain and simple RAPE right there by the broker. Watch out for prices to rise across the country as the long winter in the NW, flooding in mid states, and other weather is causing a shortage already. Not to mention the transport fee.
