Whats all involved.

Whats all involved in buying a sled from the states when you live in Canada?? I am considering buying a used one and bringing it over to Canada?? Is it worth the hassles?? What about taxes and such?? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated, thanks. It wont be right away but possibly soon.

You need:

- CLEAR title or MSO in hand. If the guy owes the bank, and is planning on paying it off with the money you pay him....forget it.
- Recall clearance letter from applicable dealer/manufacturer. Didn't use to cost anything, now some dealers are charging up to $250 for them.
- Seller needs to fax you title/MSO and bill of sale in advance.
- 72 hours notice and faxed paperwork (title, recall letter, bill of sale) to the US side of the border you plan to cross.....do it more in advance in case you miss something.

You pay:
- $207 RIV fee at border
- Pay GST on purchase price at border

It's a pain in the ***, but it's not the end of the world. If I had more money I'd never bother.....but I'm not quite there yet.

So where do you get the Recall clearance letter, does the owner get that or the buyer?? And if everything is done in advance, could it be done in a few hours or is there some sort of waiting period at the border?

You get the clearance letter from a BRP dealer. The Canadian one's charge you now, so maybe try a US one....like the one the US bought it from. If all your paperwork is in line, time at the border is dictated by how busy it is. Count on an hour or 2.
