What the Best Bike For a Tibersled Kit

probably comes down to what you know. i know 2-strokes.

the 500 2-strokers are tuned for super broad and tame power. mostly because they would be unrideable for most people on dirt if they were cranked up any more. small carb, tame pipes, low rpm, low compression and wide power spreads. wonder what would happen with some work in that area.

hmm.

The husky 511 absolutely destroys the fe570, 500 xc-w, kawi 450, and the dungey 450 in power. I have seen this bike walk on worked 500 ktm's, side by side in a up hill climb, the husky can pull another gear over the others and just drives away. Overall horsepower isnt that impressive on paper, but the stroke and smoothness of the motor combined with the gearbox ratio's make this bike simply work. Now is it the "best" snowbike? i dunno, but it works amazingly well, and obviously I am not the only one who thinks so, I have had 9 snowchecks this year for 511's alone. These guys are coming off of mostly 2011-13 kawi 450's and ktm 500's. MOre power than you can use with huge output off the stator, e start, closed loop FI, pretty tough to beat at the $7500 price tag.

calling BS on the power dept of this bike...the 511s are stock ~43 hp and with the power plug and a good full exhaust they are making ~50-54 hp. Thats what the kawis and 500 xcs make rock stock. Dungey and the fe570 are making over 60 hp. And look the 511 weighs in at 249 lbs....vs kawis around 240 and the dungey at ~230....i have a hard time believing this bike "destroys" the four bikes you mention here.

I'm not calling BS.... but wondering where people are getting that the KTM is making over 60 hp? The tests that I have seen have it around 54 (still really good). But its the same with bikes as it is with sleds.... the dyno number doesn't really matter. I've rode the 2013 bikes- and the KX 450 is faster than the KTM-- despite hp numbers--- and they were all faster than my Honda.... oh well.

You're probably looking at rear wheel dyno numbers, the numbers i quoted were at the engine ratings. But for rear wheel numbers found this on MXA. Also, take into consideration the 2013 Dungey bikes have a couple more aggressive maps pre built in and a akrapovic exhaust already on it.

Quoted from MXA

"Q: HOW DOES THE 2013 450SXF RUN ON THE DYNO?

A: Of all the production bikes we have every dynoed, the 2013 KTM 450SXF makes the most peak horsepower...by a big margin. Last year’s 2012 Kawasaki KX450F previously held the record at 55.50 horsepower (the 2013 KX450F is actually less powerful at 55.05). The 2013 KTM 450SXF erases all the records with a startling 56.95 horsepower. You read that right – the 2013 KTM is hair shy of 57 horsepower."

It reaches its peak horsepower at 9400 rpm (where it is making 1-1/2 horsepower more than the KX450F). And, as the other 450s start to drop precipitously at 10,000 rpm the KTM makes 4 horses more than the KX450F, at 10,500 rpm the 2013 KTM 450SXF has 5-1/2 horses more than the KX-F and at 11 grand the KTM has a 6 horse advantage.

Ok, but no one have answered the question,,,,,, '' what is a dungey fe570''. Someone is refering to somekind of a ghost!!! we got 3 FE 450 coming up for our stable but I've never heard of any 570 factory edition!

Looks like the FLEET of demo snow bikes for Timbersled Factory program next season will all be the KTM 500s if that says anything for the durability criterion.

Plenty of useable power, reasonable weight, dependable, fuel injected, well built, kick AND electric, excellent oiling system, 6 speed, smooth with the counterbalanced, compact for a 500... good package... Break off a good roll of Benjamins though.

Lets face it a guy probably NEEDS about 5 or 6 bikes.

A KTM 300 for single track
A Yamaha or BMW or KTM adventure bike
A crotch rocket
Some kind of touring bike with luggage etc
A SM bike for urban attack
Dedicated snow bike preferably turboed.

But... if a guy can only own 1 bike a KTM 500 Exc covers a lot of bases. JMO

This is the exact reason I got a 500 exc. I've got dirt tires, supermoto tires and soon a mountainhorse kit. It seemed like a good bike that will do everything well. I picked this bike because it will do what I need. Just pick a bike that will work year round.

Boy started quite the debate here. I liked the old two strokes but after the past 7 years on a 4 stroke i will never go back! i was successful in selling my old bikes and ended up acquiring a ktm 525sx my new bike has been converted to the 6 speed and was super cheep. It is fairly light fast and i can add the electric start (which i have already acquired most of the parts) with a trail tech stator kit i am gonna be able to run a good light and handwarmers if i wish. I was able to get all this with the proceeds from the sale of my old bikes so no payment or dipping into savings. As far as being the best snowbike i doubt it is but i think it will be damn good for me.

I,m looking to purchase a dedicated bike. I,m wondering why most say go with the 450 when the 500 is the same weight?

Too bad it is pumkin orange. Couldn't KTM come up with a more desireable color? Looks like it will be a great machine though.

Nothing that an inexpensive plastic kit cant solve. Black and white from Acerbis for less than $150 for full kit. Add a wrap or keep it basic!

I wish sled plastics were this inexpensive!

I was asked by pm's and emails a hundred times on the Service KX500AF build project thread, what would be the "best" all around snowbike? That has given me the build project idea for this year. I will start the thread in September. I put a ton of time and research into that objective, as well as first hand experience with a ton of bikes of every make and model. I am very excited about the build. I think you will like it. It will cover all of the common questions. I will try and cover everything with one bike that win's the over-all "best snowbike", and give specific reasons why. Not just my 2 cents opinion.

The KTM 500 XCW is 9 lbs heavier than the 450 SXF. The 500 XCW has 50hp versus 57 hp with the SXF. The 500 XCW's wide ratio transmission makes 3rd gear out of place. The 450's close ratio is ideal. The 450's cam profile and ignition curve are agressive and super fast. " It's a race bike". The 500 has a mellow cam and soft ignition curve. It is designed to be an "Enduro bike". The feel and performance are very obvious on the snow. The 500 is a super nice snow bike! But with the characteristics we prefur in a snowbike, the 450SXF has several advantages.

After discussions with KTM Canada we went with the 450 SX-F(Factory Edition) for our fleet of rentals pretty much for the same arguments MD is refering to; more HP, lighter flywheel, short ratio tranny...

Ha ha Randy. You are gonna miss the 500. You will be back lol

Yes I will ! Ha, I miss the Monster all ready. The big 2 stroke with GP Porting is a blast of a snowbike for sure. This year's project is going to be for anyone wanting to buy a bike and go ride, and have all the benefits in a specific bike. I will build another Big 2 stroke hot rod for sure!!! The sound and smell alone make it worth while! Ha!

thats the info I was looking for thanks.

Randy,

I see that there is a 5.4kg (11.9lb) difference between the 500exc and the 450sxf.

I wonder though how much of that weight diff is attributed to the lighting system (lights, stator, switches etc) , the heavier tires/tubes, larger/heavier rear shock and arm etc. Most of that heavier stuff is shed when you are building a snowbike and many are adding a lighting system to their race bikes.

Makes me wonder what the stripped-down, ready to mount the the MH kit, weight would be of both bikes... Probably a lot closer than the showroom weight diff.

I believe that the 500 EXC has emission devices on it??

I think that the enduro bikes have a heavier/quieter silencer as well?

The taller the gearing chosen in the 'Horse, the closer the "apparent" ratio becomes.
I wonder if this is a handicap or not??

The independent tests I've seen have the 450 in the 53hp range (not the claimed 59 from KTM, which is common)... I've not seen numbers on the

There are lots of different factors in the the choice of a bike... A Rental/Demo fleet and a owner/user may have different needs.

Just like with a sled, asking "Which is best" needs to take into account a lot of factors... A heavier/bigger rider will have different opinions than a lighter/smaller rider when evaluating the same bike... How you ride... are you a "gear jockey" or a "cruiser" ... terrain, snow conditions, etc etc make a big impact...

When asking is the best... also ask about the reviewers weight/size, terrain, riding style, altitude, snow conditions, rental fleet/end-user etc... can make a big difference in what YOU will find ideal.
