Dont get a Harley...

At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader Harley-Davidson.

Peter Long, Johnson's Brands Marketing Manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers." Long added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target dead center and promises to draw sales away from Harley Davidson in a way no other motorcycle has been able to accomplish."

The new line of bikes, marketed under the name Big Johnson Motorcycles, will, according to Long, deliver what Harley has only promised. "Our research show that this, a Big Johnson, is what Harley buyers are really after." At the unveiling of the new line Monday, several current Harley owners agree. "When I bought my Harley, what I really needed was a Big Johnson," said one Harley owner. "But I see now that riding a Harley is no replacement for having a Big Johnson."

Manager Long also said that his company would follow the lead of Harley-Davidson and cash in on a huge market for non-motorcycle related products. "We realize that not every guy can have a Big Johnson," said Long, "But image is very important to people. If they don't have a Big Johnson, they at least want to project the image of having one."

Asked if he anticipated Big Johnsons showing up in the hands of Harley owners, Long said it was unlikely. "I just don't see the need to have a Harley if you have a Big Johnson," he said. "And I can't imagine someone who spends all their resources to acquire a Harley having a Big Johnson. I think it boils down to this - You either have a Harley, or you have a Big Johnson, but you are not likely to have both."

"Given the choice," said Long, "I think most guys will opt for the Big Johnson."

Another force driving sales for the company will come from women. A survey of the wives and girlfriends of nearly 1,000 potential motorcycle buyers indicates less than 5% would approve of their partner spending $20,000 on a Harley Davidson. But, when asked if they would be willing to pay the same amount of money to get their partner a Big Johnson, nearly 4 out 5 thought that would be money well spent.

One female present at the product unveiling was quoted as saying, "There is no way I will let Lonnie drop 20 grand on another one of those Harleys, but 20 grand to get him a Big Johnson? Well, that's something we could both enjoy, and it's something he really needs."

Carla Roundheel, manager of the dealership network now being established, said her motto is simple. "I service what we sell."

Big Johnson Motorcycles will be traded on the New York stock exchange under the abbreviation PNSNV

Love my Ultra! 70K and counting.

How many miles are too many on these V-twin bikes? I'm looking to buy a newer before next year and and have been looking at Victories. Haven't decided if I should buy new or used since this will be my first real bike. I've always had dirt bikes and an old Honda 500 before. Is 10 or 15K high miles on a bike?

If you haven't ridden the latest 1200 customs, don't knock 'em!
I'm a sales manager at a large H-D dealer and can ride any bike I want. I've been riding Sportsters for several weeks on my 60 mile round trip commute (on I-90) The only H-D that's much better is a Touring bike and they wont yank a 40 foot wheelie like te EFI 1200c I was riding. You can find a 2007 1200c for just under 10k GET THE EFI!!!

Resale sucks on Yamaha, Victory ect... BECAUSE NOBODY CARES!!
The NADA book just went UP by 20% on late model Harleys!!!

Actually, Victory just passed Harley in resale value. They are number 1 right now.

And if you want to be exactly like every other rider on this planet, buy yourself a harley. If you want to be different, ride a bike that outperforms harley in pretty much every way, is ranked 2nd or 3rd in quality (harley is 8th in the cruiser market)then buy yourself a victory. You won't find a stock harley that beats a similar displacement Victory in a drag race.

I know, for whatever twisted reason, that owning a harley is a religious experience for some, and you won't believe anything I say, but go ride a victory, see what you think of them.

mileage on a bike is determined by care and maintenance more than anything else. Two harleys in our group of riders have over 110K and one over 130K. Also a Goldwing I ride with is over 130K (not a V-Twin). You can't really knock any of the big bikes, just need seat time and get what fits your style. Harley does have a pretty good engine reman program though. Send engine to Harley, 10 day turnaround, new parts as necessary new powder coat new chrome, just like new.

10-15k is typical of a two year old bike... nothing to worry about... high mileage shouldn't be much of a concern but you can tell if it has been maintained by takin a close look at it...

I work at the large H-D shop that MOONMAN mentiond. I just sold a 2002 Road King with 113000 miles on it that ran perfect! It was the original motor and trans.

The new harley's will run forever if maintained.:)

Heres a link to our used bikes:

thanks for all the great info. I have a buddy that has a 03 1200 sportster classic for sale at about the money i was looking to spend. I was also told by a SW member that he would make fun of me if i bought a sportster & not a "real" harley. I've also looked at used Victory's.....WOW irealy like some of those.

I've worked for Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Harley Davidson, and Victory. You want a name and to dress up like its Halloween? Get a Harley. You want performance and a cheap price? Get one of the Japanese bikes. You want the best of both worlds and not to have to look like an idiot while you ride cuz you're trying to look like a badazz? Get a Victory. FYI, Sonny Barger, the president of the Hells Angels, rides a Victory Vision. Serviced it for him a couple weeks ago. Just food for thought that the real true "badazz motorcyclist" (don't call him a biker, he doesn't like that), rides one of them.

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you. Just back from a 1100 mile weekend. Like has been said, you will see a lot of them with over 100K on them but like with anything they have been taken care of. I run Syn3 oil and change oil and filter 3500 to 5000 mile. I have the dealer do the major check up on the 10's. Only had to replace the cam chain guide at 47K (didn't surprise me, had been told to watch for it on the '02). 10 to 15 K is bearly broke in, get on and ride:) Great bike!
