What is a good dedicated snow and ice tire for a diesel pickup?

They now make a blizzak in a heavy duty truck tire, 10 ply. Almost went with them but the Michelin Ltx 10 ply was a better all around tire without having to switch out in summer. Not a dedicated snow tire but a “much better than most” m+s all season. So far this winter been very happy with the Michelin’s, but if I needed a dedicated snow tire, I wouldn’t hesitate for the blizzak. The outer tread compound on them is second to none.

Well also here’s a follow up, less than a year later in about 15,000 miles these Michelin are not holding up. They’re supposed to be a 50k mile treadwear rating, and my rears are down to the wear bars pretty close. I’m heading in to get them warranty for treadwear today and considering something else.

I need a more aggressive tire for all the desert driving I do hunting, so I’m probably going to get the BFG all-terrain T/AK02.

BFG KO2 are made with 2 different compounds, one with the mountain snowflake, one without. If ur tire salesperson doesn't know the difference, u may want to speak to another salesperson.

I have ran cooper mud/snow tires with studs for 15 years and your crazy if you think the snow flakes on the side of a mud tire will help it work on a frozen highway. SNOW TIRES, no one makes ice tires... And if they did, im sure they would have tire studs!

Im putting on a set of cooper snowclaw studded. Hope to get 25000 miles on to winters one summer to finish them off.
I’m probably gonna try a set of snowclaws. Look similar to ATWs... which rock, but are really hard to get. Think they maybe quit making them, they don’t even show up on Coopers website anymore.

They quit making them; I asked.

Figured I’d contribute. Been running Duratracs for the last 10 years or so. 3 sets. My last set were not as good as the first 2. Didn’t ride right after about 65mph. Great offroad, but, needed overall good riding.
Just bought a new truck that had Cooper ST Maxx but needed replaced. I planned to give those a try. Couldn’t get them for about a week and nneded them right away.
So I found the Backcountry MT. Dean makes them.
They are nearly identical to the Cooper ST Maxx.
I had the center tread siped. So far in 2 weeks, I’m 100% impressed.
15” heavy snow, tracked out, rutted, they were great. Little mud involved but I stayed in 2 wheel drive and had no slide or spin issues. No ice yet so can comment. But I will say highway slush will be just fine.
Dry roads, you would never know they are an MT. I’m picky about these things so I wouldn’t say this if they weren’t. I can finally notice them at about 75 but really its not even worth mentioning. I guess now its just watch how they continually perform.

Or perhaps they actually do know what they're talking about. As of late this year, the KO2 is available with both the 3PMS as well as the 50k mileage warranty in the same tire, where before, you got the snowflake but not the mileage. The DT version was only in certain sizes, and gave you the mileage warranty, but not the 3PMS. I did confirm this with an email to/from BFG.

Toyo has a new A/T III listed for severe snow conditions, book market when time comes .

My tire guy couldn’t get me Snow Claws for some reason, but had Blizzak LTs in stock, so I went that route.

Seem to drive ok so far. Haven’t been on the snow yet. I live down 2 miles of gravel and they grab rocks really bad.

BFG K02 vs Toyo AT3 on a diesel pulling a sled trailer ? ……just looking to get a new set.

Nether, Falken Wildpeak AT3W.
I have ran BFG K02 (3PMS), Toyo AT3, Transforce, and Duratrac.
Let me start by saying the transforce are junk, wore out in 20k mi, noisy, and terrible traction.

I found that the Duratrac was worst on ice/ snow and a very noisy tire too. Plus side is they will last 80-90k mi with good rotation.

The Toyo At3 was a close 2nd to the dura trac Traction wise, but a lot quieter. Got 40k out of mine before they rock-drilled out.

The KO2 3PMS was a decent tire, not overly noisy but it was there. Ok traction on snow but ice sucked (similar to duratrac). They rock drilled, not bad enough to cause flats but enough to sacrifice performance and made them look ****ty.

I decided to try the Falken wildpeak AT3W 10ply, Can't comment on tread life yet but biased off current wear expect to get 60K out of them.
Very quiet, i could actually hear the wind going by the cab unlike the rest of them.
No rock drilling. Phenomenal wet and ice traction. (Coming from someone who used to put on studded winterforce.)
Buddy says, "They good for sled deck but still ride nice."

I have tried a lot of tires and have finally found a style I am going to run on all my trucks.

I ran AT3’s all last winter on a 20 Chevy 1 ton diesel. Pulled a 4 place enclosed in Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming almost every weekend. No problems.
Size is 295 65 20. A little narrower and a little taller than a 35 12.50 20
