What is a good dedicated snow and ice tire for a diesel pickup?

Use to run Toyo M55's load range E on my trucks until they changed them to a softer sidewall for "comfort" & a harder rubber compound for increased wear, then the winter traction went to ****; These AT3's do not appear to have enough sipes to be a good winter tire; Tried Nitto Exo- Grapplers, Goodyear Duratracks, All not worth a damn, Currently on my my 2nd set of BFG KO2's, though not perfect in all conditions, they still seem to be the best compromise for year -round conditions!!

The Toyo AT3 does feature the 3PMS rating, so it’s got that going for it.

Toyo’s CT replaced the M55 and also features the 3PMS.

Scott,

I think you'll love them. You'll probably see in the above post, I run these on my Super Duty and they have been great.

The "RT" actually stands for "Rugged Terrain" and yes you are correct they area "hybrid" tire. Probably one of the newest and fastest growing tire categories. You basically get the best of two worlds. The luck I have had with these has actually led me to the Nitto Ridge Grappler with is basically the sister tire to the Toyo RT. Toyo and Nitto are owned by the same company and the RT and the Ridge Grappler are very similar.

I ran them for about 55k miles. They lasted a long time. They wore really evenly, but they became quite noisy when they wore down.

BUT, I went back to Toyo M/T in June.

Interesting for sure. So did they get noisier then the M/T?? I have a little over 10k on mine and they have been great.

Hard to compare, as my new M/Ts are much quieter than my worn out R/T.

FYI - The AT3s are not available in Canada "Until at least the new year" even though they are available stateside almost anywhere.

Can anyone comment on the continental HD3 for snow driving . Looking to get a f450 and that is the std tire. Was thinking of replacing with a Hankook DH07
I bought a used 2017 F450 last fall. The previous owner put HD3s on shortly before I bought it. After running it through one winter snowmobile season I don't have any complaints. Plus they are quiet and we'll balanced. I did always have at least 700lb in the bed between the sled and gear, but that was enough for me to be comfortable on a narrow, crowned, icy road. Other times pulling a trailer with plenty of tongue weight. Only time I was in what I would call deep snow was in unplowed parking lots with the heavy trailer and it drove through surprisingly well.

For all out winter traction look into the Michelin XDS. My dad runs them on his 2008 F450. I've driven it in some pretty adverse conditions and they flat work. They are expensive and we haven't gotten them to balance well for speeds 75+ with the truck empty but I think that's what they are rated for. Loaded don't notice any vibration at high speed. Maybe a road force balance would be better?

I have run some studded tires in the past, don't remember all the brands. I currently have two sets of blizzak W965 tires. one on a cummins 2500 and the other on a suburban (both have summer tire sets) on the suburban even though they are on steel wheels and the tires are heavier, the winter hwy mpg is better than when running toyos from les schwab in the summer. Have not had to chain up since using them (knock on wood) they handle better than the summer all terrains as well. on the truck they handle the same or better than the ko2 s that are the summer tires. I really like them.
I really like winter tires on my trailers. Or having the trailer tires studded. its nice when the trailer stays in its own lane and can help stop the truck.

My new truck has the stock Micheline 245s on it.
Can't wait to run them down and put some 35x12.5x20 Toyo M/Ts on it. Lol

After alot of research im going to go with blizzak LT, blizzaks have excellent reviews and the price is good for the size im going with.

I am going to try Toyo AT3’s. They came in today. Will have them on in a few weeks.

Please keep us posted. They are my #1 candidate so far to replace my AT2 Extremes. Even if I have to ship them up from the USA :)

Had the AT3’s mounted and balanced today. 295/65/20. Balanced out well. Fairly quiet down the road. No louder than the AT2, KO2, or about any all terrain. For sure quieter than a MT. So far I am impressed.

I’ve gotten some good feedback out of this thread on all-terrains, but wonder how many posts had anything to do with “dedicated snow and ice” tires that the OP asked about.

I don't understand why people still buy Toyo MT's.

They're damn near a 20 year old design and their competitors have released updates 3 and 4 times over.

Have run the Blizzak W965 as a winter tire on my trucks since the early 90's, very good grip on ice and snow, very quiet on the highway and ride nice. Usually get two or three winters out of them before the snow tread is gone and when the time comes just run them as the summer set then replace in the fall. Always run summer tires during the warm month as the Blizzak snow tread goes quickly when subjected to summer temperatures.

Many other great tire options out in the market.

Just my $.02
