Just upgraded my dirt bike from a 2007 Honda 450X to a 2013 KTM 500 XC-W and picked up what I was told the last Timbersled long track in western canada? Now I'm putting it all together. I have high hopes for this set up? If anyone has any tips or suggestions for me, that would be great.

From what I understand they are pretty plug and okay...mi would say get a thermo bob stat...

This poll should maybe say "What bike do you WISH to have?".... it's funny how you buy something and then later learn what might work better or what does work better.

I have the WR450 and I think it's a good bike.... it's not perfect but it's good and obviously I have a lot of fun on it. Estart, headlight, ability to put it on the road in the off season, etc. It has a lot of positives.

What bike do I want? The 2011 or 2012 KX450 (and I have one coming! YES!). The bike makes it's power in such a way that it just rips for a snowbike application. EFI is a major plus since you don't have to mess with the carb crap, which I hate and I really suck at. Add the Bazzaz AFR tuner and a FMF Powerbomb full exhaust.... can't be beat and I've yet to see any bike touch the all around nimbleness mixed with raw power that the KX450 has. Add to it Allen's good point that you can start the bike by hand and the Estart looks pointless. Another interesting point, with the Bazzaz tuner the fuel economy is just STUPID!!!! You can put an entire day in for only 2gal of gas sometimes while I'll go through 5gal on my Yamaha. Seriously.... a FULL DAY RIDE for only $8.00? That pays for the kit by itself over couple years!

KX450 is probably the best snowbike available.

Don't forget you are also reading a thread that is over 3 years old. I made that statement 3 bikes ago. It still holds mostly true that the KX was a great bike at the time and still is.

Stay away from the 13 and 14 air forks. The new 15 has a different setup and might do better. If you get a 13 or 14 you can also pick up a set of used forks on ebay from 2006 and up... they fit. The air forks are great for the summer just the extreme temp changes in the winter makes em blow.

It's amazing how much has changed in 3 years.
 
Rush did you need the dobek for the KTM, I have one on my KX because it needed it? Just got a 2013 xc 450 did it need the dobek also 9-12k elev?
 
I really didn't need it at 5k - 7k, but I can't really speak for your elevation. The SXF/XC is much leaner out of the gate than the KX. But at 12k it would probably like to be leaned out even more. I would add it anyways. I'll be putting the Dobeck on my KTM this season (left it off last season, only had a few pig rich days) but mostly because I'm adding NOS and possibly a big bore depending on what my wallet looks like.
 
2014 RM-Z450 here! (Had to jump on board with the last year of the non-air forks) Love the thing in the summer on the gnarly single track and even more fun in the winter.
Ran the old 2009 RM-Z450 last season along side a 2012 KTM350 and loved every minute of the winter. 350 was a little short on grunt to keep up to the 'Zuk, so we've set that aside for a summer-only bike and will have a 2014 KTM 500 XC-W bolted to a new 2015 LT kit to shred the snow...

BIG thanks to Timbersled for pushing the bar higher and higher each year making these bikes truly go "Anywhere You Want To Go".

KTM battery and sitting in the cold.

I am looking at purchasing a 2014 KTM 450 SXF . This bike does not have a kick starter, only electric start. My question is when this bike sits outside over night at 0 degrees will that battery start the bike?

I would get the kickstarter.... If you battery tend it .... it could work...don't use a lithium set up but at the end of the day the kickstarter is worth the money.
 
My dealer said they don't make a kick start option for my husky FC 450. Should be the same as the Kim right. Or is he wrong? Anybody know?
