West Yellowstone snow conditions

I checked the west yellowstone webcam and it doesnt look like they have that much more snow in town than we do here in MN. Only places I know of that have snow that are close is Cooke and Togowotee

you are from minnesota and consider cooke and togwotee "close"! you midwesterners have some serious passion! 4 1/2 hrs is a long *** way for us to drive to cooke!

key word is passion. Cooke is as about as close as it gets for us for good mnt riding and most of the time it is worth all of the 13 hrs. I have made the trip to revy a few times as well. 24-30 hrs depending on weather and roads.

Great ride yesterday! Snow was better than I had anticipated and as you can see from the photos, we do have a weak layer to worry about in the next few weeks. This layer is in the top 10-12 inches and hopefully will gain some strength in the coming weeks. As for the rest of the snowpack...Strong! It is one of the better starts to a winter as I've seen for stability and base. The pits we dug were in the upper regions of Skyline Ridge on both Cabin and Tepee sides. Don't let your guard down, things can still "pop" as the slabs that were breaking at the ground in our tests would be devastating if they were to propogate from a smaller avalanche. Keep up with the reports from the GNF Avalanche Center guys and make your own smart assessments on each area/situation. I.E. one at a time on the hills, stay out of runout zones, everyone in the group has avi gear & knows how to use it!
That said, Great powder out there right now! Not often a guy gets to do powder turns on fiberglass hill or on the Big Sky trail for that matter. Some south trails have been groomed & it sounds like most everything will be groomed in the coming days, other than the Big Sky trail which typcally doesn't get done until Jan. 1

Trails? Your coming out here to ride trails?

We have fantastic snow for this time of year....and every day it is getting better and better!!!!

But trails???? :)

Silly flat landers...trails are for Midwest....

How are the trails out there? I will be heading out from the East coast Dec 28th... Should I expect good riding out of West Yellowstone?

I guess you missed my post just above yours? Snow is great right now and yes trails are being groomed. Below is a link to the current grooming report and the other is a link to a page you can download the trail map for our area. Stay to the right, don't be an out of control pr@*k and have fun trail banging!

yes trail riding. Only own a yamaha attak not a mountain sled. Doesn't mean I won't play off trail a little. Flat lander I am only about 15 above sea level right now and when I look out my window I see ocean.

Well, you picked heaven, and the right year to come play, it is truly one of the best places on earth for all levels!!!

People like Ace can not only help you find great places to play, but help you build skills!!!

Have a great time, and be safe!!!

Outside my window is 3000' going up to 9,418 feet...

Just a few reminders, do NOT climb a hill with someone on it, and do NOT climb to help them....this alone would cut avy deaths in half!!!!!!

the last 3 yrs there has been virtually no grooming done between christmas and new yrs. so i would not go there for trail riding until they start doing almost every trail every night.

While that is true...it is more of an issue of the last three years has been absent snow.....hard to groom what is not there...

We have more snow on the ground now than we have through mid January comparing last few years

A little off topic, but I've been riding West for a few years. Made many trips to Cabin / Skyline, and heard a few different guys talk about Fiberglass......how do you get there?

Fiberglass Hill is a local name for the big hill right when the groomer turns around at the end of the Big Sky trail. It is aptly named due to the parts and pieces that are typically found from the folks desperate to climb a hill after a long trail ride to the mountains. (& probably a long truck ride form the flatland) In the past, that meant fiberglass hoods, etc. Usually you can find lots of rental sled pieces laying around. It gets beat down as you might imagine so to be able to make some downhill powder turns on it is a rarity.
