Weight Vs. Function?

How many people think that a lighter sled will out perform a well set-up sled in the deep that may weigh a 100lbs more? From my experince I will take the heavier well set-up sled over the lighter sled. Yes light is nice, but I have yet to see some of the lite sleds go the places that the Alpine and Cr. racing sleds go in the deep and steep. These guy's have done there homework and have tested just about everything there is too test. (ie. ski's, skids, shocks, tracks. ect. ) and not too often if ever does the scale come out.

total newb here, but i would think it's all about compromise... light doesn't always mean right... couple pounds here and there that make for a better sled would outweigh someone goin for the lightest.

I used to drag race on mud..it was all about power.weight and handling..my setup was one of the heavier at 3400 pds..yet it ran some of the fastest times..if sled weight matters that much then rider weight matters even more since it is movable on the machine. I too would take the heavier well dialed and tuned sled everytime..easy proof for all is next time your out find a nice slope you cant climb..give it your best mark....then lighten your sled as much as you can(gas can, pack clothes spare belt any thing and everything)then try the climb again..I bet between gas can belt pack and everything else most take with them you have 50 pds sitting on the ground.. and I doubt you will go any hire on the hill either....now take the same sled and do all that as well as put a 50 pd lighter rider on it(100 total) and I bet it will climb higher..but it takes a good sized difference in weight to make a big difference.

Ya like me, I put a mark on the hill @250lbs...then let my boy hit it on my sled@130lbs... he embarrasses me, and no, I AM the better rider! Weight does make a difference. That said, setup is more important for sure. The mod sled you mention sure they are set up well. The custom parts they use to acheive it are also of lightweight material as well. They may not break out the scales because strength and function come first, but weight is still in their equation as well. Put a big enough turbo on an Apex and yes, it will climb anything, doesn't mean it's a fun sled to ride all day though.

There is no replacement for displacement!

yes there is ..I used to race against a 600 ci vrs my 440 ci..and I built both ..including all suspensions and chassis...my better dialed and setup 440 motor smoked his 600 motor..his dynoed 1600 hp..mine dynoed 1596 on 1 500 hp fogger kit..I ran 2 kits....

I totally agree with you it takes a lot of weight to make a big difference on the hill. I have seen a lot of sled's alot lighter then mine, and buy that i me a 100+ lbs lighter not go as far. You can't go up when you are pushing all the power away from the hill.;)

yes tim but that is well over a 100 pd diff....do you think spike could out mark me by the same distance with just a 20 pd difference?

light/heavy what yammi's have more power than my DODGE.

HP/LB That is the question The more HP/LB is ALLWAYS better in steep/deep enviroment. I Have ridden with alot. Ya the turbo yammi's allways impress. They have supreme boosted HP/LB numbers. But still. I take a DOO XP for avrage riding. I mean. a boosted YAMMI where is the challenge on most hills? I acctually want to ride a short track in spring time, just to give me a challenge.

With enough $$$ ANY hill is climbable

I never saw the dyno #'s but I sure did see the trucks Mike built run!!! We ran some built up trucks that were no where near street legal. Mike's floaters made us look like we were running little battery operated hot wheels jeeps! Very impressive!

I think light weight is way over rated. I mean, yes it needs to be light but it also has to work well together. The xp doesn't feel balanced or light to me. Hanldes and rides like a very heavy sled. Just my opinion though

What ^^^he^^^ said.
I am not impressed by the XP.
It's light, but there is just something that needs to be tweeked with that sled. My Poo is heavier and IMO a lot easier to ride.

That 50 lb difference is on a clean dry sled sitting in your garage.
Rider weight, pack weight, snow build up, fuel, track length and type, as well as a host of other varibles make way more of a difference. At the end of the day in deep powder, I am less tired on the Poo than an XP.
More smiles per gallon by far.

Fact: I'd rather dig out a light slead than blow a nut gasket pulling out a heavy one from a stuck :beer;:beer;
