We got nailed at Caribou Basin!

I have also posted this in western Canada (BC/AB) and also in land use Sorry for that I just want as many people to see my story as possible.

Last Saturday we were snowmobiling at Caribou Basin north of Revelstoke. No one in the group of five has been to this particular area before. My group has been coming out to Revelstoke to snowmobile from a range of 10 to 20 years, so we are aware of how the Caribou closures work. I looked at the Revelstoke club site to get the directions and to find out about the closures. So we woke up to clear skies Saturday and decide to explore somewhere new. So head up to Caribou staging area. The place was quite busy. We unload and head up we notice how well the trail is marked and take notice how the corridor is set up to the open area. We get to open area and start to tour around. We see a steep climb into the most eastern bowl. We get into the east bowl riding around. We decide to go down to this lake. I did mention to the group we need to pay close attention to any closure signs. So we dropped down to this small lake and go about another ½ mile not dropping down a lot so I was thinking we were ok to do so. There was also old track around so without seeing signs we feel pretty comfortable doing so. So we get to a wall of trees and we realize we can’t go any further. So we take a break in the sun.

Soon we hear a Helicopter and then see it overhead. It circles around us and then comes in lower and I realize it is going to land. It lands nearby and two guys in uniforms with hand guns and wearing MEC sunglasses come over to us. I then get the feeling something is wrong. He begins to tell us that we are in a closed area and he is going write us all tickets for $230 each. We plead with him that we had no idea that we were in a closed area and that there was no signs. He then gives us a break and tickets 3 out of 5 of us with $230 which totals $690 worth of fines. I’m just sick to my stomach can’t believe that we screw up like this. He also goes on to says that we should have used are GPS coordinates that are posted on the Revelstoke Snowmobile site to know where the boundaries were. They take a bunch of pictures of us and our snowmobiles. We ask who else is in the chopper besides the pilot they tell us someone from the Ministry of Environment is the chopper. He did not have the balls to show his face to us. So they finish writing up the ticket and we get back up to the open area. We spent the next 30 to 45 minutes searching for any signs that we may have missed. We found none.

So I get back home and decide to PM Powder Puff on here and tell her what happened. She put me in contact with the guy from the club who is working with the government on the Caribou closure boundaries. He tells me where we ticketed that the boundaries were not yet determined for that area and have not been signed. He also says that Government officials have stated that anybody that was in that area would not get ticketed until the boundaries were determined. I tell him about what the MEC sunglass wearing gun packing fish cop said about the GPS coordinates. He informs me that there is no GPS coordinates posted because the boundary has not been determined.

So it sounds like they just need to pay the Selkirk Helicopters rental with trying to trap us into paying tickets. This is not about saving Caribou it’s about making sledders look bad.

The 3 of us that were ticketed are disputing it. The hearing is supposed to be in Revelstoke. So it would be cheaper for us just to pay the tickets but that would make us guilty of something we are not.

I just thought I would share what how screwed up and corrupt the BC government is and how the sledders seem to always loose out in the name of saving the environment.

There are always a few dickholes wearing uniforms that give law enforcement a bad name.

Fight it,,,they don't have the right yet to do that. There needs to be a "Recreational Synopsis" for this.Right now if you were to go to court and fight the ticket,I'd bet that you would win,,,No signs,,,No boundry yet,,,how are you to know where you are?

I have a sick feeling that MEC is funding part of this program.

If the area was closed to mechanized use, why were they landing a BIG NOISY MECHANIZED HELICOPTER in there ??? OH YAH, I forgot, the government is higher than GOD. Unbelievable. I would fight it. If what you say is true, and there are no set boundries, even by GPS, then fight them fish cop turds. They can't just make up the rules as they go along, and they have to know the rules themselves. Sounds like THEY forked up, not you.

ya who made more noise and disturbances you guys or the helli I would vote for the Heli myself i would think that would do more harm in scarying off the carabo or whatever they are trying to protect that a couple of sleds even if they had cans on or whatever i think you should fight it if there was no sinage and no gps info then how were you to know where not to go. Thats one nice thing about being a flatlander there are fences and i know which people dont want sleds on there land its easy to tell where not to be that would be the only advantage to being a flatlander that i can see hahaah just had to add that and thats my .02

I have heard so much Revey BS this year. I have'nt been there my self and have no desire due to all the BS. I'm glad I live in such a great place to ride. I think I will keep my $$$$ in the good ol USA.

The best thing that could be done would be to sue conservation for over it and then hold the person personally responsible for it, then you would get to the bottom of you is responsible for the sunglasses and for the tickets.I can guarantee that is a case of an over zealous C O that has over stepped his authority, that probably has some sort of connection to MEC. This is right up their alley.I know some one who use to be a director of MEC and they said that they are deep into this sort program.

They were able to find you folks be zeroing in on the tracking devise that were implanted in each of your bodies at birth by the government. :face-icon-small-fro

Make sure that you get this info in writing from both the Revy snowmobile club and the gentleman you spoke with who says the boundaries are not yet set. Even better would be to have this person attend court and testify and to bring along those documents from the ministry that says the boundaries have not yet been set. Without him your dead in the water. Your taking on the gov't now!

good ol USA has its problems too

I'll still go to Revy, and I'll purchase trail passes and support the clubs, sounds like they could use the funds.

Revys land use battles sets a lot of precedence for all of BC's fine sledding.

Whenever I deal with any law enforcement, I ask for their bussiness card, and give them mine. IF they have a God like attitude, I ask for their supervisors name, and or card. Then when you dispute/sue/tak to court, you know who said what, and can go over their heads. Usually the law enforcement type will mellow out, and will work out a solution, that usually ends up with a verbal warning, and a handshake, at the end.

....I have found the Police in Revy to be great people. Sounds like you ran into a CLASS 1 DICKHEAD. If he had told me that the minister was in the coptor, I would have asked him to address the boundry, and gotton his card as well.

That's a great idea!! Hold the person to task on a personal level,,and in a nice way,,let them know that you're going to dispute it,say some thing like,"I think there may a boundary issue here,so I think I'm going to dispute this" It gets them re-thinking their stand on the issue. Also if the C O is acting like a d1ck head you can bring up people that can verify his action and he has defend himself to the judge.

I like that idea!! Oh and yep I'd be fighting this sucka!

Thanks for the MEC link...damn dirty hippies.

We had a similar situation last year but when we came to the end we headed back to a bigger bowl. A group of ten stayed in there and the heli came and wrote up every one of them. We also went back to look for signs and found nothing and the gps coordinates were never brought up. If you guys can, you need to do everything in your power to fight it as it will help everyone out. For that you get :beer;. Good luck.
