Washington fuel prices, how much can you take

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
$120 per barrel of crude. I heard somewhere that it was $28 per barrel when G.W. took office. Oh yeah It's election year

retarted prices for diesal, a freaking byproduct of gas that they have put so much additives in that its impossable to get any kind of mileage out of it. I say lets pay the trucks to park and cut everybody off and force the price down, something has got to give

You are also forgetting the fact that this market is based on supply and demand. We, the people complaining about the tremendously high fuel prices, are the same people that fill up our huge motorhomes that get 8 mpg, hook up to our trailer full of toys, and drive to a destination to enjoy these toys. What I was saying, sir, is that it costs to play the game. I'm not ignorant, or by any means blind to the fact of what these companies are doing. But these companies are doing what any self respecting business does. They supply to the customer for a profit. How about we reduce the demand for fuel and watch the price decrease...:face-icon-small-coo don't be so quick to judge one's statements without fully understanding what they mean.

BTW..I havnt forgotten anything..I may have a more indepth understanding of business principles...as a Regional manager for a Fortune 100 company...you are really mising some basic Business principles here.

First of all the oil industry works together to control prices...they have been on the hot seat for that on more than one occasion..nothing new in that regard..they control a huge lobbying group..and we all should know by now that is what runs our government.

Kevin states: You want to make as much profit as possible,...well for a huge corporation that is called "corporate greed" They are lacking what is called in the business world "corporate social responsibility" Remember the Exxon fines and restitution that they still havnt paid???(Valdez)
they are basically a monopoly with industry controlled pricing. Big oil could care less about the domino effect of their corporate greed and how it can actually be detrimental to the basic lives of many people thruout the world . People with out cars in parts of the world are hugely affected by the other prices that have to go up to accomidate the increase in fuels. (not talking recreation stuff here either but basic life sustaining products)...since they all have their prices within a few cents of each other there is basically, in essence no compitition that can keep someone honest.

Kevins quote: You are also forgetting the fact that this market is based on supply and demand.Supply and demand..beginers Business 101 theroy...well there is more to that than meets the eye...since the whole world is somewhat dependent on fossil fuels even lowering the demand will not change their prices

Ironically, the Fed’s obsession with core inflation will push oil prices up and up. A decline in international oil prices will only come with a sharp reduction in oil demand. This will come when foreign capital flight forces the Fed to aggressively raise official short-term US interest rates, reducing US economic growth to less than 2%.

Unfortunately, falling international oil prices could be much more problematic for the US economy than rising prices. A sharp decline of international oil prices will deflate the external supply of dollars that has fed foreign investment in US bonds. Oil exporters will have fewer dollars to invest in US bonds. More important, oil importers will need fewer dollars to finance oil purchases, adding to upward pressure on long-term US interest rates and downward pressure on the dollar. The probability that global economic growth will decline sharply is much greater than the probability that it will accelerate.

Long story short....Oil companies have had over 89% growth in the last couple of years...the demand has NOT grown anywhere that big....in sumation that clearly shows that supply and demand will always have something to do with the picture but that is just a very small portion of what really drives prices in a Global Market. The SUPPLY is Controled by their industry...they manipulate it for their own good period!

BTW..in regards to social responsibility in business and business ethics are you becoming a "greed monger" or AKA a person that will charge the most they can get away with and laugh at their customers for paying for something that has an over inflated price delta??

To understand business you have to get way beyond the basic theroys of yesterday! Having a small busines or businesss from home has little in common to how a huge corporate entity runs their organization.

OR...maybe we should feel good about ourselves while we "legally" rip people off with massive profits and blame it on supply and demand.

Ok obviously you know what you are talking about. Your right, Im not a manager of a fortune 100 business (way to add that in...everyone thinks you're that much cooler because of that) but what I do know is that these companies, although "greedy" like you said which makes sense, will profit out of us until they no longer can. I don't know what company you work for, but you know that if you can pull major profits in and get away with it you will do it. I never disagreed with any statement you made to try and get under your skin. Its annoying that you assume things by my statements and argue against me. A question I do have is why wouldn't these companies reduce the price if we reduced the demand for them? Thats an honest question.

If we did that our compition would eat us alive...we are regulated by the FDA whereas OIL companies are not regulated anymore...perhaps it is time once again.I never disagreed with any statement you made to try and get under your skin. Not trying to be cool..that would be spelled Kewl and I only mentioned it for credibility nothing else. The perception that I got from you is that you were defending "big oil" perhaps I was wrong there and I appoligize if thats the case.......

Just cause other parts of the world pay top dollar for fuel does not correlate with the prices here in this country. For example in Holland(The Netherlands) Fuel is around 8 dollars a gallon...the majority of this big price tag is due to Taxes...not unlike Washington, granted not as much tax here...heres the catch...In Holland and in other EU countries you just wont see many young kids 16-18 with cars of their own and peolpe that do have them dont drive them unless they have to. The vehicles they drive for the most part are very small..many would not even meet the US crash test standards. They have mass transit systems that are actually usable. We on the other hand dont have much in that modality. They also use the heck out of bicycles.

Now you take a look at Mexicos gas prices...2.40 a gallon in the interior...border towns are charging 2.60. People from Cali are flocking across the border and buying it up big time. Yes the fuel is not as "clean" as California emissions required fuels but it works.

These gas prices effect the entire economy of this Nation. Food prices are skyrocketing..this causes those that are not as blessed as some to really suffer...think of the majority of the worlds population(very poor) they are struggling today and tomorrow they may be starving or unable to provide for infants and the elderly with some of the most basic forms of life substinance.

By going sky high with prices that effect many Oil companies are doing a nice job to increase share holder value..but at what cost?? The cost of life for some I am sure.

The company that I work for for the last 20 years 20 years ago was a people culture company..today I am sorry to say we are a financial driven culture company....its all about the bottom line..however we do focus on our customers as without them we are nothing...that said we still had a real good 2007 with 13.5% growth.....I personally cant even relate to 89% growth. Taking food out of the mouths of others would not be my idea of a responsible CEO of any company. I just will not and can not condone greed no matter what form it is in.

This fuel cost rape will hurt the entire economy. Add that to the fact that a majority of manufacturing jobs are heading to China to join the many that are already there. The US should be self sufficient..now we are weak at the hands of others. Our own Gov. is not doing any of us any favors.

I read somewhere (here I think) of an idea that someone had...if there was a "grass roots" movement to boycot one chosen Big fuel company(Exxon the most arrogant would be a good place to start) for a year...that would change their tune somewhat...keep in mind they still have the rest of the world to sell to but I think we are the biggest consumer as a Nation of fuel.
