Turbo?? Not so sure??

After being around a few turbos and riding a couple my self, the choice to turbo goes way further than "to turbo or not to turbo".

The first thing to consider is who you are? Are you a tuner that can tweak on the fuel programming. Are you understanding of minor issues? Are your riding buddies the same?

Second is the bike. Does it have a 9500rpm rev limit or 11,500rpm rev limit? Choosing a bike with a higher rev limit will broaden the power band. When you are really working it you don't want to let up and back off early.

Third is the turbo builder. Do they really know bikes and single cylinder application? There is a LOT to proper plentium design and turbo placement.

Fourth is the nut on the seat. If you use it a a demo bike and the people that ride it do not know they are on the rev limiter for extended length of time the motor will fail!!!! If you are knowlageable of high performance and don't ride around with you head in the clouds the bike will last. I put 36 hours on my 2015 Yamaha YZ450f KMS turbo last season. I think I will do a leak down test and check the valves this fall.

Fith is track selection. Are you building a go anywhere LT? Or a hair on fire, stand on end ST. They both work but the ST is more of my kind of fun.

Is it a bolt on and ride thing? NO!!!!!! You will tune and work hand and hand with your builder for the first few rides. Will you get to the point of a kick and go bike? YES!

Should you turbo your every day ride? NO. There are some days the power is just to much. Wrangling over 100hp through the trees is work for an out is shape fat kid at 10k feet of elevation. All power has a life expectancy. More power out of the same hole means shorter life. Just common sense here. Do you really want to wear out your $30k turbo bike for a family ride day? I do because my 5 year old son loves to ride the Black Momba and that takes presidence over my wallet. There is nothing better than a power wheelie with your son!!!!!!!

i was going to say the same thing. Turbos aren't a good fit for tight trees, on/off throttle, etc. I don't see the need in Washington's mountains either, they just aren't big enough. Instead they are thickly wooded, with very deep snow, and extremely steep. Perfect for NOS.

You are describing NW Montana and N Idaho perfectly. The country the Mountain Horse was built for. NOS does a good job around here.

I did say that it was family ride day.

The Rocky Mountains have trees and Turbos. I love the tight trees and my turbos. The trees are the only place I ride!!!!!

Those are definitely some tight pecker poles for sure.... love that barely-able-to-fit riding. Looks like you just need some steep lines in those trees... makes it hella fun.

Our stuff is a little more spread out, but we sure love our steep drainages around here. Second half of the video shows a bit better of what I love the most.

You should sell your 4t and build a 500 2t. My N/A YZ450 just was not enough last year, and I only weigh 145lb.. Turbo bikes just want to hit the rev limiter, and I was bouncing off of it quite often without a turbo.

I'm building my CR for ~70hp with moderate mods and then a +20hp shot of nitrous next spring. :face-icon-small-hap

Really interested in how your running nitrous with the carb?

Ya, Rush that terrain looks like a blast, thanks for sharing. That is even better turbo country than what I ride. You would have a ball on my KMS YZ450F. I will try to get up there so I can share it with you.

Pecker poles is right!

Always get a kick out of tree ride videos from other places, it's like they remove half the tees.

Colorado is redonkulous with trees!
