Trailer or Deck/back of truck and why....

I've owned a 3 place open, 2 place with topcap, and a deck. If I was hotelling it or going back home I would prefer an enclosed trailer (assuming there is room in the hotel parking lot). It also is a great summer storage space.

I have a bumper pull camper so I really like my deck with the camper behind it. Works great for sleds as well as atv's. Down side is I still need my one ton for the set up.

Trailers allow you to use less truck if it's your daily driver. Decks are easier for tight spots and limited parking in your driveway.

i use my 4pl enclosed for summer storage, and for long trips to places that have big snow parks.the other 95% of the time i use my sled deck. no backing long trailers down narrow forest service roads, and its a must have for spring ridding around here unless your ok ridding dirt for miles....i must admit, at the end of a days ridding, its nice to have an enclosed to change in and get in from the weather

I usually haul on my flatbed because my truck is so rough it smooths it out a little! And it's easy to get around tight spots, just a little tougher to unload as it's pretty high. Have to get more creative. I'd love to have an enclosed, anyone want to donate one?:face-icon-small-hap

suprisingly there seems to be alot of variables, short distances, more than two sleds, not having a crew cab pickup for some extra gear storage, these types of things lead me back to the trailer. but for longer trips, tires and mechanical problems, lic fees, parking at a rental home can a pain in the arse with a trailer.
we try to go to mccall every year (more like every other year dammit) which is an all day drive. first year we lost a trailer tire, no big deal. but you cant drive home without a spare. lets just say les shuab is pretty proud of those little buggers. hehehe. next trip to maccall, you know real fancy mud flaps on those semi trucks, ya the chrome ones kinda tapered pipe looking deal. let me tell you at 70 you pick those right up off the road, first bounced under and hit the truck twice and then the trailer, as i came around the truck on the inside lane that i was passing he started flashing his lights at me, i was gonig to stop and inspect anyway. well needless to say that damn flap had center punched the trailer axle. and was pushed back in the center about 8 to 12 inches, tires had already scufed real bad in the short distance to stop along the highway. we were able to come along the axel strait enough to get off the highway and thanks to fellow sleder brian freels, freels fabrication. he met us at the truck stop with everything we needed to get back on the road.
this is why i prefer my sled deck..

I'm getting rid of my 2 place to get a sled deck. If theres only two of us it makes it a lot easier to get in and out of places and with the crew cab truck if I want to take four I can still hook up to my buddies two place. If I could afford it I'd probably go with a four place enclosed but thats just to much cash for me right now. Eventually I'll probably pick up a four enclosed and keep the deck then I can pile six of in if I want to.

Decks?

This could be a dumb question... Anyways isn't it a pain in the *** to unload sleds from decks? We only use a two-place trailer and throw another in the truck if we need to. Always thought a deck would be slick, but pulling a sled down those steep-assed ramps doesn't seem like to much fun???

Lol, This cracks me up! You'll drop off a sick cornice, or climb a big azz chute on the mountain, or side hill a steep creek, but you won't ride it up a little ramp? Jk

It's nice to have weight on the truck for spring riding + no trailer. I hate riding on the gravel and like to get as far up in the truck as possible.

hated my deck! a couple of times I almost dropped my sled of the side of the truck while loading plus I was always crawling into my 8' box to grab things, it basically turned my pickup into an suv.

hated my trailer too! parking lots, u- turns, backing up, climbing steep icy slopes while pulling a boat anchor, to name a few reasons.

the best is the back of the truck. it takes me five minutes to load now. the other great thing is that you never have to spend time picking people up or dropping them off. mind you we don't drive far to sled here.

depending on what deck you have, what length ramp you have and how comfortable you are with ramps it's REAALLY not a big deal! it takes you a bit to figure out the order of things if you do it by yourself, hauling the ramps around can be annoying if you don't have a system. but seriously after one time with the deck you figure out the system! if you have a lifted truck or are nervous about the ramp get one with a longer ramp! moto mikeys is soooo mellow to ride up! i used to have some home made jobby that was a little bit sketchy but if you have to slides on the ramp and you park in a decently flat (accross, so that the ramp isn't wobbly) spot then it's a chinch! mikey's ramp has full slides and is two pieces, i'm not sure of specs on it but it's plently long to make it a really mellow ride up! gone are the days of PINNNIN it in the prakinglot until my sled got high enough to just grab major brake and slam the sled down into it's spot... those were rough loads..... now it's SIMPLE -so simple a girrrllll can do it... hehehehe

there is a bit to figuring out the right deck for you, i chose one with the slide in sides cause i used to always go by myself to meet crews. that way i didn't have the sides sticking out and catching wind, cut down resistance, cut down gas $$!! however, a buddy of mine has the kinda that the tail dips down a bit and teh ramp system is MUCH easier to deal with, but you can't get the slide in sides with that...

trailers... well, sometimes i think it woudl be nice to have a trialer and to bring the sleds home, leave em on the trailer and just unhook... but the more i think about it the more i think having my sled inside and off the trailer so i can give her the real easy inspect every once in a while does WONDERS for keeping up on maint!! so i demanded my bf build me a loading dock and now all my issues are solved, easy load and unload at home so that's not a downfall anymore and all the bennies of having a deck!! ;) but i'm spoiled!! hehehehe

Enclosed trailer. You can get them fairly small and light now - so you don't have to have a 3/4 or 1 ton to pull an enclosed. I've got the new TC11 triton and love it. Store the sleds in it, its tall enough for the ATV's in the summer, the sleds stay clean and its secure storeage for when your at the hotels.

on loosin it off the side... i used to be in that situation until i had a nice long ramp and some super sweet slides so i didn't have to cary speed. now i can about idle up it w/o carbies catching at all...

i hear ya on the loosing the bed thing... i had a little slide out made for my deck so that the whole bed slliiidddesss out and i can get what i need. pretty spiffy and not too much in materials to do!

i sold my 3 trailers and only use a sled deck. if more than 2 are going they need to have a trailer. I just like not having to worry about a trailer behind you, flat tires, all the salt that get thrown (open trailers) and the MPG is much better with a deck than a trailer

I looked into those, but it meant loosing another 4'' of clearance from the 2' I had left of my truck.

NOTHING BEATS THE BACK OF YOUR TRUCK
how could you argue that?! putting two sleds on TOP of a truck is not ideal. if the truck is a half ton its technically illegal.
