Too much smoke

I recently purchased a used 2008 Crossfire 800 with 100 miles on it.The tank had about 1/4 left in it from last winter,I filled it with premium fuel, fired it up to find out it is VERY RICH, smokes like crazy, from start up to operating temperature.Removed the plugs to have a look at them, they are black and oily,I guess my question is this, did Cat have the computer over calibrated for oil during the break in period,if so,how many miles before the oil consumption goes away?
PS : I have not yet driven sled,as due to no snow

Thanks for the help

seeing it only has 100 miles on it the first tank of fuel and maybe the 1/4 tank that had left in it was probably mix fuel. The dealer mixes the first tank to aid in the break in period. Also some of the 800 cats had an issue with the oil pump sticking causing it to run rich, I know my m8 did.

I was told when I bought mine to premix your first tank of gas at a 50:1 ratio. This is in addition to the oil injection, so it is essentially doubling the oil for the first tank. There was probably premix left in the tank so I would run a full tank through it and see if it still smokes. Mine smoked like crazy for atleast 1 tankfull after my "break-in" tank.

Sorry, didn't mean to duplicate the post but Braaap12 beat me to the punch while I was typing.

So, in other words, I agree. LOL

Once we get some snow and you are able to get some miles on and figure out what your fuel:oil ratio is, you could turn down your oil pump. Cats come factory at 32:1. The 3 sleds that i have I have turned them down to 48:1. It has worked well for me. It is not an issue of cost oil but my machines run better without leaving unburnt oil in the snow, plugged up power valves and fouled plugs.

Just a thought but some of us like to use fogging oil during storage and when you fire it back up it smokes like a ***** till ya burn it off, just a thought.

Thanks guy's for all the replies, once it snows here in Saskatchewan,'ll get out and put some miles on it and see how it works,I'll post a reply to let you know how it is.

I'll bet that it will stop smoking that bad after you get the oil burned out of your pipe. Once it is up to temperature and run up a couple of times it should stop smoking.
