I'm just wondering out of the two places where is the best place to go. I need some imput. Togwotee would be 4 hrs ferther for me but I heard they get the most snow. Also what are the names of some places to stay in Togwotee and the Big Horns.

Bighorns are ok

I have never been to Togwotee but have heard its awsome. Have been to the bighorn.s 8 times. It is ok but I go to Island Park Id. now and have for 6yrs. I wouldn't waste my time going to the bighorns again. Drive the extra 4 hrs to Togwotee because it will be well worth it. Cook City is not too far from the bighorns and is a great place.

Tog is definately better than the Horns, Togwotee Mountain Lodge is the place to stay in Tog, if you decide to sled in the horns, Bear Lodge is the best place in the Horns, their locations and services are the best.

If you sled before January, you almost must sled in Tog, not enough snow in the horns. Tog also has a lot more extreme riding (chutes and drops) that the horns has a few of, bot not as many or as extreme, Tog is alos a much larger riding area.

That said, I park my sled in the horns and ride there because it's closer-I'd rather have 2 weekends in the horns than 1 weekend in Tog, but that's just me, with diesel going to $6, I would ride in the horns...JMO, hope this helps!!

Bighorns are not that great i dont think. Lots of the areas have minimal(if any) snow cause its all wind blown. Also there is lots of rocks in that area. We went there over new years last year and i dont plan on ever going there again. Ive been to togwotee also, riding is awesome there, something for everyone to do whether it be trails, backcountry, or climbing its all there. Snow is usually amazing also. The biggest downfall is that its cost way to much to stay there, almost 3x as much as cooke.

No doubt Togwotee.
I am not a Togwotee mountain lodge fan though. It is the focal point for everything. LOTS and LOTS of people.
I prefer to stay in Dubois and trailer up to TieHack parking or stay at one of the smaller lodges.
If you want, Pm me and I will send you a list of all the various places to stay right on the trail.

I went to the Horns last year and loved it!!! There was a lot of snow and a lot of stuff to mess around on. I have never been to Togwotee but some of my group members have, they said they loved it out there but the drive was way to much and wasn't worth it.

Horns seem to be good for the first taste or if you simply don't want to drive further. I can tell you Togwotee is further then 4 hours from the Horns in the winter. No if's and's or but's. Probably closer to 6+ when it is all said and done. Hell Togwotee is 4 hours from Casper and that is the best route, the route over the Horns through Buffalo or Sheridan is no picnic!

Here is the skinny. Togwotee is much larger riding area and more diverse in every sence, with more snowfall earlier and later riding ability. The Horns offer everything Togwotee does just on a smaller scale.

When driving from MN, I feel it's worth it to keep on trucking to Togwotee and bypass the thought of riding in the Horns. Maybe I'm wrong????

RJ- I'll be going out west for 4 or 5 days of riding. The longer drive wouldnt be a problem for me if togwotee is the best. Have you been out to Togwotee before?

So I guess were going to togwotee next year huh brian?? Anyone have any suggestions for when the best time to go out there would be?

Togwotee Area

We go to Togwotee alot and love it there,There is alot of steep chutes to play in.They always get alot earlier snow whcih mean you can ride alot earlier, I have meet many great people from up there.Need to book early because it fills up fast. There is a couple smaller lodges tp stay at also..I ride all winter would love to meet new friends to ride with and show around...

Could you post that list? I am also planning a trip and would like to know our options for places to stay and anyones recomendation for the best.

Thanks

Within a few miles of Tog there is Turpin meadow ranch/lodge and Lava Mountain Lodge. Turpin is just before Tog coming up from Jackson, Lava is on the other side Tog.
Crooked Creek and I think Lineshack are in Dubois which is a bit further down the rd from Lava and I dont think are quite as high up in elevation, but not as congested either...
Goggle Dubois Wy snowmobiling Im sure there's more

I have stayed in Dubois several times at the Super 8. Last year it was $55 a night. I normally trailer up towards the pass and park at Brooks Lake turn off or all the way to the lodge or the flats just a couple of miles before the lodge.

I have been up to the Crooked Creek lodge but never stayed there. Place seems to have a lots of people there which is usually good.

how much you think you spend on gas trailering up from dubois and back>? how many min drive is it from town?

If I remember correctly, it is less than 40 minutes to togwotee from Dubois. It is about 30some miles of trail from the LineShack to togwotee so it is kinda like going to top of the World from Cooke except no low elevation issues. Driving from the LineShack is not recommended as it is about 25 minutes from the top just to the highway.

Seeing the Moose at Moose Haven is kinda unique.

Ya Bighorns sucks, everyone shouldnt even waste there time stopping, hardly ever any snow and windy windy windy, Tog is muucho better :)

All the old guys like tog.

Big open medows lots of snow.been there 5 times big horn 1 time. i will be back to the horns.... in feb......march..... tog in dec25-jan30 see my ridin get a litte cheaper later in the season...

Not all places are open in the winter, but a little homework will tell you which ones.

Like I said. I just stay in Dubois and trailer up to tie hack parking. It is only about a 20 minute drive from Dubois and is real close to some great riding.

It usually takes 20-40 minutes depending where we park.

Last time I was there I figured spent an extra 15-20 dollars driving back and forth.

I like lodges sometimes but for the last few years I like the ability to pack up and leave if the snow sucks or we can't get a break in the weather. Go to better ridding. At many lodge/cabin type places you loose a deposit or you are forced to pay for nights that you did not use because you leave early.
