To turbo or not to turbo

I am having a hard time deciding weather or not to turbo my pro.

I had an 09 dragon ran pretty flawlessly until it lost the pto side piston at the end of the year.

In 2010 i had the following problems.

reeds
oil pump
2010 flash - unable to start sled when hot
egt blew out 2x causing boost leak.
had 2010 update done and mechanic forgot to put all of my pipe springs leading to many problems.
ecu
voltage regulator

I actually traded the sled out of town so i didnt see the poor guy how got it next.

I have over 400 miles on the new pro and cant decide if i should turbo or maybe just leave it stock.

Sounds like you had the typical dragon problems whether it was stock or a mod. These pros are so much fun stock it would be hard for me to mod one. But then again, we ride 0-4000' mostly and don't have the hp loss levels that the guys running up high have either. With that said, I would be afraid of putting a good turbo kit on one of the new pros, just that I don't need one on mine....Yet :face-icon-small-win

I just finished putting a turbo on my O8 Dragon. What caused you to lose your PTO piston? Just wondering to make sure I don't have the same thing happen.

Thanks

pto loss

I think a lot of dragons lost the pto side until the 2010 updated pistons and head came out.

Basically the pistons scuff until they fail.

I think the polaris gizmo might be the way to go to stop scuffing.

Imo the 2008-2009 were the best years to turbo.

2010 updated pistons and head with the new ecu flash ran very poorly for me at 7-11k.

The answer is ALWAYS yes!! :face-icon-small-hap

After running boost it's hard to think about going back. First day I took my Pro out I thought "ya, maybe it would be a shame to turbo this thing". Second day I took it out I thought "ya, the sled rocks, but I want boost again, now!".

It is a risk because everything is so new, but I'm throwing the dice and getting a kit. I chose a reputable turbo manufacture and a good dealer. I am HOPING that things go well. So far the reports have been good.

Might make sense to wait until mid January to decide. By then there should be lots of people with feedback about whether it was a good decision to get one or not. I will be one of them.

The more and more I ride my Pro the less I feel the need for a turbo, this sled has done everything I need it to in the trees while boondocking. It surprises me how well this sled goes stock, it feels like a mod. A turbo would be great if your shooting gaps but so far riding this sled in the trees I have zero complaints.

At the risk of sounding flaky, I am revising my previous post. Spent another day on a stock Pro. In the trees this time and it really made me reconsider the turbo. 4 stock pro's today in our group and it was such a blast. These things do so well.

I think I could be perfectly happy running this thing stock.....well maybe stock plus a pipe:)

I am feeling the exact same way. This sled stock (engine) is awesome. Problem is that I only have half the story since I haven't ridden a PRO with a turbo. That will normally change things. Watched a couple of the videos from Silbur and Stanger and they sure look impressive and that isn't even on a ton of boost.

One thing that concerns me is that on all of the video clips those guys are in and out. We can hold our aerocharger turbos on carb'd sleds to the bar for minutes without detonating from heat soak and I haven't seen that on these. It looks like they are consistantly in and out. I also don't like the fact that there are just about 15 total PRO turbo setups ON THE PLANET from about 5 different people's kits. That is not a very large sampling to go from and pretty much makes you a tester instead of a consumer. I've been the pioneer on a turbo system in the old days and it was just not that much fun and really expensive....all that said I still bet I end up with one. I guess we'll see. ^$#@*!

The kits are starting to flow on out. Have several riding buddies getting them and a couple are now on the sleds. So lots will be learned here in just a few short days.

i'm going to ride mine all this year and watch the reports of other people and see how this engine is this year. i think i'll end up waiting to turbo next year if everything else is good. just my thoughts on the turbo.

I have an OVS TM1200, OVS TM8, and a mid mount TAPEX. The sled I am riding right now is the new Pro. Sure the turbo is enticing, but there is something to be said for just pull and go. Just leave the sled in the trailer and fill it up when you are ready to go. I think I am getting lazy the older I get.:face-icon-small-con

TTT

I GOT THE SAME PROB! I RIDE A M1200 WHICH IS A BLAST! BUT I AM TIRED OF THE COMPUTER BULL THAT U HAVE TO MESS WITH! I AM LOOKIN AT GETTIN A PULL AND GO PRO WITH A CAN AND SELLIN THE 1200. BUT I DONT KNOW IF I WILL BE HAPPY WITH THE POWER ON A STOCKER AGAIN!

I don't know anything about turbos except they're sick. I was considering a pump gas set up for my m8 this year before I decided to just wait and get a new sled next year. Really been liking the idea of a turbo but pull and go is soo nice. Isn't pump gas pretty pull and go for the most part?? fill me in

Concur!
After selling the TD8, I really haven't missed it. The 5% of the time that the turbo shines over the stocker really isn't worth the hassle to me anymore.

Don't think twice about getting a turbo for that M! I just spent a weekend on my newly installed boondocker turbo in my M8 and I am sooooooooooooo amazed on how much fun it is!!!!!! I was like you going back in forth in my head on weather or not to get one. After this one weekend I don't think i will ever throw a leg over a non turbo'ed sled ever again. I have touched NOTHING! Just installed by following the instructions word for word and pulled the rope and it is sooooooo spot on!
