to drill or not to drill

I have seen a stock xp track get ripped open from a small stump. I went in through the ported hole. If your not worried about the little bit of weight i would not do it. Remember that hole could cause you a $1000 track.

This is exactly why I have refrained from "track porting". For what you gain (if anything at all), it isn't worth the chance of stabbing a stump or something else and completely destroying a track.

2 or 3 years on a ported track on my 1150....no issues. I did have small (about 1.25" diameter stump) poke through once, but no damage.

I think it carries less snow, and rolling resistence is definately less.

If you want better rolling resistance remove some idler wheels. Not sure if drilling the track helps all that much with snow removal either IMO. I have run a total of 6 idlers on a Xtra lite skid and at one time then removed 4 of them and the track speed did increase a bunch!

There is absolutley no doubt that drilling the track will reduce rolling resistance. I have a 06 M?? that I drilled the year after I built it and it WORKS with no issues..

for the last four years i have been running ported tracks with no problem, they diffenetly help lower roling restitance. I also ride alot of trees and had never had any problems with stumps or branches ------untill mid season last year, two tracks in three trips and then a friend riped one as well. all riped completly through and all riped right through the porting holes. That was enough of the porting for me. Also the tracks do strech alot, about an inch of adjustment, and do ractchet a little easier. if you dont run tree a whole lot id go for it but if you do eventualy you will have a problem.

156x16x2.5 Camo Xtreme, bought it when they first came out, been 3-4 yrs. ago? Ported it right away with 5 -1 1/8" holes across all ribs.

It parted ways on me last month, ripped right in half in the middle of the ported holes, had just climbed up the side of a bank in deep snow, had run over a small tree, 3/4", and broke it off. Don't know if that little tree top had anything to doo with it or it just decided to go at that time.:(

New track cost me $705 shipped from TracksUSA, plus I suppose a good 3 hrs. labor for install.Could have installed myself but didn't feel like trying to find a shop or doing it outside.

Will look at new track real close before cutting any holes in it, maybe a couple down center rib at most.

And that's my .02:beer;;)

I put a couple 2" holes in the center of my track and found that riding through hard and in low snow amounts that the high fax don't seem to get as hot. I truly have yet to understand this theory, but I have rode miles down rds with little snow and found no damage to the high fax.....just a thought for you.
