Time for a new helmet. What do you like?

Jonzin' for this one :)
Right at 2 lbs. of pure lightness!

I looked at their website and at the helmets... am I missing something? Are they not SNELL approved?

A helmet can be light as hell and look awesome..but if it doesn't protect my dome, I'm not wearing it.

you should try a shoei it's like sticking your head into a bag of feathers:face-icon-small-hap

I'm with this guy! I made the mistake of trying one on one time. Had to get one and I'll never buy anything else. Oval shape and fit is similar to a Klim F4, but soooo much more comfortable. Emergency release cheek pads too in case EMS needs to get your helmet off when you are out.

Don't try on a new Arai, you'll hate yourself. Bought a new one for street bikes and can't stand wearing anything else after having it.

Im always amazed that sledders pay premium for snowmobile brand helmets (klim, 509 ect). Do you really think they know more than the motorcycle companies that have been developing/testing for decades??
Bell, Arai are top The top brands IMO bit fit is the most important. I have a suomi or however you spell it and cannot believe I rode with heavy buckets all my life.

Agreed. You wouldn't buy a snowmobile jacket from a helmut manufacturer, but people would buy a helmet from clothing manufacturer. Theres only a handful of helmet manufactures in the world. Buy a helmet from a helmet manufacturer not a marketing company. Look at some of these and you won't go wrong Arai, AGV, Arioh, Bell, Nolan, Shark, Shoei, Suomy,.

I am one for light weight helmets.. Like mentioned a lot try on a lot we all have different shaped melons. Speaking of mellons we spend 15000.00 plus on a new sled.spend a bit on a good helmet.i have spent 200 all the way up to 550. I mean small price to pay to live another day..

As for what I have been wearing. I ran a lot of different Carbon fiber helmets in the last 5 years. Loved my airoh.
But I have been using giro down hill mountain bike helmets for the last year an a half. Light tons of venting, super comfy. And when you have a crash and hit your head.you don't feel bad tossing out a helmet that cost 250 cdn.
Any impact on your head doesn't mater how expensive the helmet it's no longer good to ware.

I have been loving my giro helmets.. Giro cipher
And if your worried about dot ece certifications then these are not for you
As for safety these downhill racers can easily reach 50mph.over big rocks and trees ect.safe enough for them good enough for me.
Jmo take it for what its worth

Have seen a few people rockin the dh helmets. I would tend to agree that they are up to the task safety wise

if down hill mountain bike helmets are so good how come motocross ,road racers, all other motor sports don't use them?

i have an older Fox helmet. i like it. its fairly light weight and comfy on the cheeks ? (broke in).. but i had a diffucult time finding goggles to fit just right with face opening and breath deflector. some goggles nowadays have too much padding and are too big heightwise. ended up modifying a a couple pair of scotts. always take along a spare when playing in the powder. wahoooo!

Jmo on th downhill helmets.. I like the, light tons of venting comfy. But hey I am sounding like a broken record here.
As far as other Motorsports not using these helmets might have to do with motorcross tracks have rules according to dot ect.
As far as street bikes well your being a little ridiculous hiway speed for long periods of time. Other dummies on the road.. List goes on

Yes us mountain riders can get ripping fast not for long periods of time. Maybe on the trail up to the good stuff.
But mostly were riding slow technical stuff
Kinda same reason we bought our mountain sleds. is to ride mountains not lake race.
I personally I confident that if stuff goes wrong that this dh helmet will still protect me.

Yes Airoh are made in Italy but you cannot order from them directly. You have to order from a retailer like Chromeburner as I posted.

http://www.airoh.com

As a motocross type helmet it breathes very well but not too much. Unless its really cold I normally ride without a balaclava and my head doesn't get cold.

Every time someone picks up this helmet they cannot believe how light it is.

This is the only post that I noticed anyone mentioning warmth. Warm/dry, and a place to mount a Lead Dog is the only reasons that I wear one.

I bought a new one in '97 from Doo. It was a Lazer full face. Long before the flip out thingies... I love that helmet! But it got old and worn out, then got left on the headache rack of the truck when we pulled out of Tog, so it was time to get a new one.

Drove up to Spicers in Houghton Lake, Mich and couldn't find anything that seemed reasonable at all! The helmet is bottomed out before I'm done pulling it on! One make was HJC, and I don't recall what the other flavour was...

I bought the HJC.

I hate it! Just like I couldn't get it to pull down, I ended up getting ice cream headache once we get on the trail to head home at night. Ended up stuffing a spare pr of Jersey gloves up in the back corners (?) to seal it up better.

I ended up finding an old Lazer on Ebay, and will continue to keep an eye out for more.

My chum wears an old Bell that he got back in '96 as well. His complaint is the same as mine - the new ones (that we have found) don't pull down far enough, and leave you hanging out. Not found anything to replace it with yet, but he will have to this year.

I should go to the snowshow in Novi to look next time I feel the need to replace a helmet.

Doo any of these that y'all keep talkin' about come down to keep you warm?

My HJC will likely end up being used as a summer helmet. Should keep cool in that blessed thing!

.

i have never got cold with a motocross style helmet but i do wear a balaclava under it. generally i'm to hot unless
i'm on the road out.

Well I ended up buying the 509 ALTITUDE BLACK OPS [MATTE] 4X-LARGE.
Yeah I know I am a square head Norwegian. I did try on several other brands but the fit did not work for me. And I could not justify carbon fiber for the money they want for not that much weight savings. I want to thank all of you for all your input. I really do appreciate it. Thank you!
