Tether Fail with Pics. Season over...

like the cap type..i always worry part of the clip tip etc could break in the cold when the tether is yanked and fail..

ps...tell your insurance company the tether failed and let their deep pockets cause a few sleepless nights for the tether manufacturer...lol..

Ya right. as soon as you tell them you installed an aftermarket tether...they'll laugh and tell you good luck.....

Musta missed the part of it beng aftermarket.

sounds to me like Pro-Design's product isn't as "bullet proof" as they believe it to be.

Then go after them

Yep, send the Insurance Attorney's after them. No way that you should take this sitting down or bent over, for that matter.

That being said BRP has the best tether (OEM) out there. Mine has never failed, my problem is remembering to use it.

Ya send it to insurance and buy it back. You could be riding that thing for less than a 1k bucks I would say and enjoy the rest of the season, duct tape her up, black gorilla tape looks pretty sweet on plastic haha. (Doesnt look like tunnel has damage)

Thousand bucks would be pretty tough. Bulkhead is snapped. Tunnel is folded (at footwells). Doesn't run anymore (haven't looked into why yet). I really appreciate your optimism though :).

So I have a pretty amazing update. I will update once the deal is final but I have a dealer stepping up HUGE for me! I will be riding a 2013 within the next week.

The guy you bought that tether from has known of the issue for a while and kept selling them. He should be sending out letters to everyone he sold one too and getting them off the sleds. Then go after Pro-Designs. Should be Poor Designs. Glad you didn't get hurt. If you would have caught any part of your body in the track of footwells you would have had to learn to live without it.

So.... I cannot say enough about the family at Fun Country Power Sports in The Dalles, OR today. The 9 hour round trip was COMPLETELY worth it!!! Alec hooked me up with a ridiculous deal on this new '13 and together working with his parents (owners) they basically covered my down payment for me. This allowed me to get back on the snow this year without missing half my season. Not only were the most friendly and welcoming dealer I've ever seen before but they took care of me like family. This place is a small family operated (Mom, Dad, and son) dealer and I will gladly make the trip to purchase all my future sleds from them. They are all sledders and have a passion for the sport and you can tell. On top of taking care of me financially they also hooked me up with a happy face clamp on the QD side of the drive shaft and put the polaris "fix" collar on the clutch side to ensure I won't have any issues. They worked hard getting me a sled un-crated and set up in time for me to even make a break-in ride before the weekend is over. I was seriously blown away with how these guys took care of me after my accident on Tuesday (just not what I'm used to with my local dealer). I feel like I have new friends and highly recommend everyone in the Northwest to support this family. I'm going to be calling them for all my parts as well.

Thank you Fun Country! So stoked!

Today has been a great day. After thinking my season was over to towing home a new sled today it makes the thousands I lost on my '11 just a bit easier :face-icon-small-hap Let's ride!

PS - Can anyone recommend a good tether?? lol

I have the Polaris factory tether on my 13. After reading your story I have been testing it. I want to pull it at WOT to see if it will kill a max RPM sled. Going to be a little tricky, don't want to go over the bars under dead engine breaking. Also had really good luck with the Teth Air system. Just haven't had a chance to install one on the 13.

You could throw it on a track stand to test it

1. You have a case against the tether builder. Get a snake and have that lawyer bury his as$ in litigation! For a 12K$ I sure as hell would.

2. Matte, you won't eat snow if you pull the tether at WOT. Just find a long open meadow and hit it. Get to speed, sit down and pull the tether, then be ready to hit the brakes.

My buddy had his throttle stick on his 2012 pro and it smashed into a tree as well. luckily it was a small tree.

Don't the Pro's have the stuck throttle safety the edge sleds had? I've had several stuck throttles on my edge, when I let go of the flipper it shuts down.

They do but when I brushed through some branches the flipper pin bent and held the flipper wide open.

I have the factory polaris tether installed on my 12 Pro. Last week it failed or was slow to shut off on me a few times. I have had the WPS tether on other sleds and have not had good luck with them as well. Also looking for a good reliable tether. Skidoo seems to have it figured out.

The Gunnar WILL fail. I had one for two rides and failed. They replaced under warranty and it didn't make it 10 minutes and it failed. Both of them fried inside and smelled horrible.

I have been running Pingel tethers since with good luck. Just make sure to lube the shaft (no jokes needed) several times a season.

So I read this story a few weeks ago and thought "wow I've never heard of a tether failing before", thinking of the hundreds of times I've used mine to shut down the sled, or fell off, etc... I went riding Friday, got thrown off in some pow and.... wtf the sled is still running. Look down and the tether clip is hanging from my jacket just like it is supposed to.
Pro-design tether that decided it wasn't going to work that time. Smacked it around a bit and cleaned off all the snow and it started working again. But now I don't trust it. One of the few things that I never gave a second thought to, it just always worked. Now its another headache to deal with. Luckily for me it was a non-event unlike the OP.

There has gotta be a way for warranty to kick in. Didn't the Prolaris's have a 5 year warranty? And the tether failed? I think Poo should do something.

Why should Polaris do something? It wasn't their tether. It was an aftermarket tether.

Well that's really good customer service :)

Yeah I had read of some people having problems but mine always worked find until yesterday so I figured maybe it was a bad batch or something. I think snow probably gets inside and keeps it from making full contact? IDK? Doesn't matter to me at this point but I would hate to see the same thing (or worse) happen to anyone else. Looking into it more though I think I probably should have had mine mounted differently. I have mine mounted horizontally to the console and it probably should be mounted upside down (don't know if it would really make all that big of a difference). I'll post a pic of how mine is mounted. My buddy has had his mounted the same as mine for 2 seasons and it works perfect every time. We even tried packing a bunch of snow all over it yesterday to try to get it to fail and it still worked just fine. ? Luck of the draw I guess?

On another note:

I think I did find the reason for the throttle sticking open. When I was coming around the first tree (the one I'm standing next to in the picture about 100 feet away), I think one of the branches clipped the bottom of the bolt that mounts the flipper causing a bend in the mounting/swivel bolt. So when I let off the throttle it must have held the flipper open. This is the only thing I can come up with as the handle bars were not hit by the second tree and after looking at the sled the bolt is bent and throttle sticks badly every time now.

Oh and I walked into my garage this morning and realized I DO have a back up sled. Check it out!

it's called maintenance.the return plunger in the pro-design gets dried out or sticky and wont close properly . seen it twice on last trip two different sleds.they need a little oil once in a while. sorry for your bad luck.
