TAMPICO 2012/2013 Part 2

Rode Jackass today; 43+ miles in 3.5 hours; lots of boondocking up in the flats area. Snow is decent and has set up a lot since last week (in this area). Still got stuck, but easier going than a week ago. Groomer was supposed to run yesterday, will try to confirm tomorrow. Jackass road is still fairly decent from the flats down. We were the only fresh tracks in the vast majority of the flats. I have at least 24+" settled in the snow park area. Forecast for the next 2 weeks is normal temps and normal to below normal snowfall. Looks like we will get some type of a break:face-icon-small-fro. North Fork road is plowed with snow and ice - fairly narrow though in places. Hope to hit it again on Saturday.

Its the road to the right just as u pass ahtanum meadows snowpark. Its before the end of the paved road.

Misc

The groomer has run Jackass and possibly the North Fork recently. We received about 1" of new snow last night, with another 2-4" forecast over the weekend at the sno-park. Temps have stayed cool with no melting. The 2 week outlook is for colder and drier than normal. Happens every January!

The North Fork road is in decent shape but narrow in places, especially on the bridges. Please drive carefully and be aware of oncoming traffic from the locals. Some of the bridges would have a hard time passing two trailers in the opposite direction. I also notice more "ditch :face-icon-small-con driving" than normal where people are testing their braking ability prior to meeting our local bar ditch:face-icon-small-sho.

I did see some recent avalanche activity on the SE face of Divide/Foundation Ridge about 2 miles east of Green Lake. First slide I have ever seen in this area. I think things are set quite up well now, but please be aware and check avy conditions when we get significant new snowfall or temperature changes.

Have a great weekend:face-icon-small-hap,

Tampico

Went yesterday pretty good snow I was surprised snow was set up but would sink in about 2 ft, still had to be smart about riding good day sunny foggy at times all in all good day. I was really amazed no one riding, 5 vehicles in parking lots including ours, we're is everyone?

Jan 9 Update

Went out yesterday and had a great time!! Snow was a little thin coming out of the parking lot but was perfect on the Middle Fork. A couple of trees were down but easily passable on a well groomed trail. Sunny skies until we got to the first big meadow when the clouds began to gather. Fantastic conditions and very few people out riding. My buddy's coolant bottle cracked and I ended up towing him out..but overall a great day. Get out while the gettin's good folks!!!

Ran up Tampico yesterday and dropped off the back side of blue slide down to the 1000 Rd for some 'scenic' riding since we haven't had any fresh lately. Went up the north fork a couple miles and cut up onto the jackass road, both of which were pretty hard, but not in too bad of shape. The hills around Blue Slide were good, hero snow, had to remind ourselves that it wasn't actually late May, lol. All of us were severely overdressed for how hot it was, quite the change from in town, I would guess it was in the upper 50s to near 60* in the sun:eek: The snow in the shade was actually much better than we anticipated, about 8" of soft stuff to play with. We came out pretty late and passed the groomer on the Middle fork and I have to say that I have NEVER seen the middle fork so smooth!!!!!:D:eek::D Another 60 mile day for the books!

Yes it was a great day with a not so good ending. Summ8rmk and myself pulled the chute, then Mike decided to give it a go. He ended up piled into that tree up at the top. When he got tossed off, he nailed his back on one of the nasty roots of this tree, then tumbled about 30' down the hill. He was in severe pain and opted out of a chopper ride. After some deliberation we decided to let him ride his sled back to the snowpark. This all took place around 4:00 in the afternoon, so we knew we would have to race the impending darkness. Thankfully all of our prayers were answered and we got him to the snopark around 6:00. We were blessed with about 6 miles of groomed trail for our injured friend before we got him shipped off to the hospital. Turns out he ended up with 3 severely broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He was in a ton of pain all the way down but he did it. I want to give a big shout out to my friends Seth (94fordguy), Casey (Summ8rmk) and Mark (Sleddude). They were the best group of guys to take care of my Brother in law, and I owe them my sincere grattitude. Thanks, guys!! Mike is home from the hospital this evening, but still in pain, but his lung is OK now.

Just a reminder that the best days can go to the worst in this wonderful game that we play. Stay alert and be prepared!

Definitely an unfortunate occurrence to have take place, but I have to say that I'm proud of the way we all stayed calm and worked together to get all of us off the hill safely with the situation we were dealt. Big props to Mike for gathering enough strength to hold himself together as well. I know a lot of prayers were offered up last evening and thankfully they were answered, everything on the trip down worked out and we were off the hill without any real delays despite the challenges.

Yesterday was an unfortunate reminder for us that even when conditions look safe, it only takes a split second for something to go terribly wrong, and that there can be times when you really are trusting your life to the people that you choose to ride with. I join my friends in wishing Mike a speedy recovery, and Thank God for allowing 5 friends to go out sledding, and allowing all 5 to make it back alive.

Amen, to that Seth. I know alot of prayers were said and they were all answered. Especially about the time we were filling a creek crossing with snow as it was getting dark, and none of us knew for "sure" that it was the way out. Thanks to The Lord Our Savior for showing us the way.

Looks like a fun hill just need to go back when there is a foot of fresh.
That sucks about Mike he will be in our prayers.
I would like an invite next time please :brokenheart:

Ya I thought about you but I didn't think u would want to ride hard crusty snow. I was pleasantly supprised with the conditions. Next time I will invite, weather good or bad.
