This sucks!! The storm couldn't have waited just 3 more hours!! Anyone else locked in by closed roads?

go around .....just north of i 80 to happy hollow road than head west to laramie.......or go even farther north to gravel road and take it to laramie.....

I believe the road he is talking about is happy jack. it will take you to the summit and then you have to take I 80 into laramie. Happy Jack may be closed too. It usually is when I 80 is closed. Its the missile drive exit off of I 25.

nope not happy jack. fisher canyon rd to roger canyon to horse creek trail to pilot mnt. road to vista drive to 30

yes i think u r correct......its less than a mile north of i80 a freind and i took it one nite last year ......there were cars, truck parked along side of i 80 the gates were down , we went right on by them turned north went down to happy jack rd and headed west..and u do come out up at the top of the pass and we were than back on i 80 when we got to grand exit in laramie we took it...for it is against the law to do this.........so we wanted to get off asap than went to hotel, slept got up and rode....
also a freind and i went around a gate on 130 a week ago last thur on our way to green rock ..no problems.....

also u may check to see if i25 and 287 is open to laramie...but i would , if i had the time head north to a westbound gravel road and make your way to laramie that way..

You could try I25 south into Colorado to exit 281. 18 miles or so I believe E CR-70/Owl Canyon Road west. That takes you to 287 & if 287 is open your home free. I believe it is about 75 miles total vs the 45 from Chey to Lar on 80.

Happy Jack Rd is almost always closed when 80 is closed. The closure gate is about 20 miles closer to Laramie though so if the roads do open you are that much closer.

There is a gravel road north of Cheyenne that is supposed to go to Lar as well but since I've never taken it I can't recommend it. I heard it can be washboarded. You take hwy 211/Horse Creek Rd to Horse Creek, then Fisher Canyon Rd/CR228 Laramie which turns into Roger Canyon Rd/CR17-Albany County & drops you in to north Laramie. Make sure you verify these roads because I haven't actually driven them.

Let me know how the 211 Horse Creek option is if you take it.

Good luck.

As of 4pm mtn time it looks like 287 is closed. I80 eastbound gates are down in Laramie. Looks like a mess out there.

rode report

Maybe this will help. Sorry to hear your stuck. I wouldn't go around any barracades though. $750 fine if you get caught and if the winds blowing and the visiblilty is lousey your better off waiting until tomorrow. Worrying about some dumb *** running into your trailer isn't anyway to spend the day/night out in some snowdrift somewhere.... Find the dance hall.:beer;

You couldn't leave if you wanted. Enjoy your stay! They're all closed. Even if you could get through on Happy Jack, I-80 is closed from the summit down into Laramie(it doesn't go all the way through unless you know the dirt back roads). I personally think you would be nuts to get off the pavement. It could be a deadly decision. I live in Cheyenne and I wouldn't. JMO

Yes, hunker down at the local :beer; and wait for the roads to open.

In case you do decide to violate a closure - I found this in the Wyoming Statutes a year ago:
24-1-109 Closing or restricting use; failure to observe signs and markers
Any person who willfully fails to observe any sign, marker, warning, notice, or direction, placed or given under 24-1-108 is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished pursuant to the provisions of W.S. 31-5-1201. A conviction pursuant to this section shall constitute a moving violation for purposes of title 31.

Bla Bla - going to title 31, Chapter 5 regulations article 12 - 1st conviction is punishable up to $200 and/or up to 20 days in jail.

If it is $750 (which it may indeed be) I couldn't find any info to verify that as of one year ago.

What's going on in Cheyenne right now is not a fair representation of this storm. I live a few miles north east where noting much is blocking the wind and you can't see the house across the street at times. Be safe and stay put. I took these within the last hour.

Be all that as it may, I'd be more worried about "punishable by froze to death or hidious accident"
If you violate a closure, I don't think anyone has any liability of responsibility to come and get you, It would put others in danger. Good luck!

we are going to stay the night here at the holiday inn. You guys are right... it would not be worth the risk. How good are the road workers at getting I80 cleaned up and opened. For you guys that live around here, what is your best estimate for them to get it opened up?

You sir, are a smart and safe man. Live to ride(or drive) another day. Good luck when you get back on the road!

Our groups are stuck in laramie. The road was probably the best at the very top up by greenrock. THey just got worse and worse as we went farther down. Luckily we got a hotel room in laramie but they are filling up fast and they are raising the rates. I was supposed to be in davenport iowa by sunday night- might not make it there in time. Hopefully the roads open up soon.
