Stoping dogs from digging.

Hey guys i need help and ideas to keep my dog from digging. My neighbor kid taught my dog to dig holes and i cant stop her. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. I am at my ends wits. Thanks:beer;:beer;:beer;

Pour cayenne pepper around the perimeter of the yard and water it down a lil. This cured my last digging dog........................

The last time I had a dog that would dig holes I would drive a stake in the middle of the hole and hook the dog to it with a short leash. I would only leave it there for ½ hour. This only works if you catch the dog in the act and do it right away. It did work.

Fill the kid next door's mouth up with dogchit. He will never do it again.

hahaha! i tried the cayenne pepper thing....didnt work for me. my dog likes to dig in the same places....when I caught him in the act, he got an a$$ whooping. he knows he shouldn't do it by the way he acts when he is caught. i started to pee in the holes and covered em up....he doesn't dig there anymore! I think my scent must remind him of his a$$ whoopings!:D

LMAO. Too Funny. Dogs usually dig for three reasons. 1.) They want out 2.) They are bored 3.) The neighbor kid with the Chit in his mouth taught em how!
Seriously, do you give them bones? Are they trying to bury them? Or simply dig under the fence. I have heard Ceyenne pepper works, but not for all dogs.

good luck. My dog know he's not suppose to dig, If I let him in after he was digging, he lays down or pee's. then I know i need to go out and look for a hole. I dont know what to try either...

Wow! this is the way you treat man's best friend, do your dog a favor and find him a better home.

Load the holes with his crap. At least he won't dig that same spot again. My wife feeds the GD squirrels peanuts that they bury in the yard, come spring my shepard goes hunting for them. Two holes full of her crap usually does the trick. That and a firm talking to and you'd think she had been beat. I've NEVER had to physically beat a dog, had to beat a dog owner once but never a dog....

That's what cured our lab too. I think it only took a few days and we started noticing that no new holes were being dug. Good way to get rid of crap for a while too, then you just fill in the hole and throw some seed/sod back on it.

I see someone already mentioned the Cayenne pepper trick.
But you're not supposed to water it down first.
Just buy it in bulk and sprinkle it wherever the dog likes to dig and leave it dry.
A dog will always sniff the ground before he digs and when he gets a snout full of that stuff he ain't gonna like it and he won't dig there.
Now for the guy above who will think this is animal cruelty, hold tight...It does not harm the dog at all.
It just really makes them think long and hard about digging in that spot again.

Yep.....fill the holes with dog doo.....it works! I use it in the field for gopher holes too (in an area with no shooting). Great way to get rid of the stuff, plus solves the other problem as well. :)

I think he was referring to the a$$ whooping mentioned, more than the pepper.

A good part of it is boredom as mentioned above. So taking them on walks and trips with us helps a lot.

Putting a piece of dog poop and filling in the rest of the hole with dirt worked for us too (for that particular hole, not new ones).

I also made a "sandbox" (2x4s in a square) and taught them to dig in that (make their paws do the digging motion, lots of praise, treats) and that seems to help a lot with most of my dogs. Then when they'd dig outside the box, I'd say NO BAD pointing at the hole then take them to the box and make them dig and tell them what good dogs they were. Worked for five dogs with occasional reminders needed.

Dogs are like kids, they all need a little a$$ whooping occasionally. If more people did that I believe there would be fewer problems nowadays. When I screwed up as a kid, I got an a$$ whooping and I usually didn't do it again. Notice I said usually. :D

Thanks for all the info guys. Tried the dog poo thing didnt work. Gonna try the cayenne pepper thing. Neighbor kid moved so i dont have to worry about that anymore. I dont give her bones either. Hope the pepper works or she is going to find a new home.
