stock Apex vs. stock Nytro

cool

Thanks!

We do a lot of riding higher that 6,000 so maybe the factory setup is closer for that altitude. I think I'll still change it out though before the happy white stuff flies.

cheers

I have to agree with most here one thing i found is you have to make the sled fit you and if your more than 5 foot 7 ya need risers it just takes some time. Can I ask how many miles you put on your sled last year? I went with some light weight mods did the seat and exhaust also installed 2 rox riser and simmons generation 2 made the sled easier to throw around and kept me up on top of the powder as well as float the sled at lower speeds threw trees play around with your foot placement and rider position a lot find the sweet spot that works for certain conditions. I didn't stray far from stock clutching seemed to work for me. I road the nytro and it was a great sled felt good but when i traded the nytro owner back sleds he said man wish i would have road one of those apexs first i would have bought one

Stock for stock the Apex will outclimb the Nytro. It has more power, more track and more weight. The lighter weight is an advantage but not enough to out climb the Apex. The only way to ride a Nytro through the trees in the deep is on the gas and do not lose your momentum.

ditto that I bought my nytro for the trees

You are correct---- in the right kinda snow the apex was a dream in the hard pack it was a nightmare..

Maybe I need to give it more time. I did notice the maverick track is cracked at the base of most of the lugs so I am thinking if I keep it I will change it out. Do you guys know anyone running the challenger extreme 2.5" on a stock Apex? Does anyone know where to get a step by step to change out a track on an Apex?

Clutching?

Meat,

I'm certainly no expert on the subject but I had very good success with some clutch tuning from Hartman Inc. I ride a Nytro, and found that the stock clutching really held the sled back. I picked up 10-15km/hr track speed using one of Toms kits. IMO it was well worth a couple hundred bucks!! Since then a buddy of mine who rides an Apex picked up a Hartman kit as well, he to has noticed decent gains ( how much I forget but I can post back when I see him next ).

Meat,

After posting I thought it may be beneficial to qualify my findings with the Hartman clutching. I found my Nytro had great clutching, for the trail...It came on hard and quick right off the get go. In deep snow it simply spun the maverick track out, no matter how slow I applied power. Hartmans kit made the sled more linear and it would respond smoother to power increase. This sure helped keep the track from spinning out so easy. I found once the maverick spins down some it would never recover or hook up again like other tracks would. I found by adjusting the transfer rods (up until you see the red lines this minimizes weight transfer), tightening the limiter straps right up and setting the front shock to full soft, helped keep it on top of the snow. This I learned from some of the peeps here on Snowest. I hope this helps you out, not sure if any of it applys to the apex though. Sean

I have a stock Nitro and Phazer. I live 70 miles from Mt Jefferson in Idaho. I had no trouble getting there through the trees or from climbing all over. For Idaho Jefferson is the biggest and badest that I know of. The guys I road with had no problems either. None were modified (07 rev 800, 700 Yamaha mtn max). All of the sled were so close in climbing that the rider made the differance. It comes down to what you like to ride.

I ride a non-turbo Nytro, but to say that it will ride all over the "Biggest and baddest" terrain in Idaho is a disservice to the Idaho terrain that you have yet to experience as well as a gross overstatement of a non-turbocharged Nytro's ability. I do most of my riding in Idaho as well and can assure you that there are bowls, faces and chutes that are still waiting to spank the *** of a normally aspirated sled in the fair state of Idaho. Nytro's are capable sleds in stock trim, and very fun, but lets not get all mushy on them.:)

Riding Yamaha Four Strokes

I've been riding sleds for in Colorado for a long time (40 years), and thought I knew how to ride - til I got a four stroke. Took 2 years and some coaching to figure it out. 4 strokes i've found need to be ridden more like a four wheeler, cause when you drop the throttle they stop. Throttle control is the key. I stayed with it because the reliability is unmatched, now you coundn't pay me enough to change. I ride an 06 Apex, stock track, stock suspension, MPI Stage 1, Simmons Series 2, ( these are excellent skis and should be your first upgrade), left hand throttle, under tunnel exhaust and high seat. I had very tall risers on it but took them off due to overcontrolling when sidehilling and went with 2" risers. The sled runs better every year - now has 4500 miles on it with zero problems, normal maintenance only. The power potential is spectacular - but the sled has to be set up by someone knowledgeable to make it manageable. That's my two cents worth - Good luck

Keep the Apex !! I love mine to death. My first mods were.
1. Heay Hitter Clutch Kit
2. Challeger Extrem 2.5 16 wide 162 or 174..stock track SUCKS!!

I started out with the 162 2.5 CE and went to the 174 with Ice Age Rails, the stock rails are tiped up in the back and they suck, get a set of flat rails.

You get that sled clutched right with a good track and you can walk all over the 2-strokes. Friend of mine had an M1000 with all the go fast goodies ..minus the turbo and I can out run and out mark it every time, plus I only use 1/2 of tank of gas to there whole tank. The Apex has tons of potential!! Keep it...

I have yet to try one of the new Nytro's and I hope to get the chance soon. I love the Apex and don't see myself making the switch anytime soon.
