srx mountain chain freeplay

Just a quick ? on the chain freeplay on a mountain srx. When I hit the brakes it seems to chatter pretty bad so checked the freeplay on the clutch for chain and it seems pretty loose? Thought it should be a about a 1/4 mine feels to be at least a 1/2 or a little more. Any suggestions or answers to this would be greatly appreciated thanks....

Adjust chain as follows. Put sled on jack stand. loosen jam nut several turns, turn in adjuster bolt with your fingers untill its snug, Not tight. Again, this is just using your fingers. Hold adjuster bolt in place with wrench, tighten jam nut.

Any noise you hear when braking might be play where the brake rotor is keyed to the jack shaft. Eric

I think SRXSRULE nailed it... Sounds like the brake rotor, not the chain.

chain freeplay

Is this common with these sleds or is it something more severe? Just wondering why its so noisy and how can you fix that sort of problem> ? Thanks for your guys help as well....

With the sled on the ground, just turn the brake rotor back and forth to see how much play is in it. They do wear, if you want to fix it its just a matter of seeing whats worn out. Take a look at the rotor, the key, and the jackshaft. depending on what you find you might be able to get by with file fitting a larger key in place to take up the extra slop. Eric
