OK so I have been looking into this as well and I really want to get one (more for the wife's peace of mind) but the thing that I don't like is that is uses the Global star satellites. We have a Global Star Phone and the service is very hit and miss. We could have a signal for 5 or 10 minutes and then could loose it for 30 minutes or longer.

Is this device the same way?

If so then I don't know how reliable it can be in case of an emergency. You may think someone could be on the way but in reality no one has even received a message yet. Any thoughts on that? I don't want to spen $150 pluse service fees that has the same crapy service that the sat phone has. I don't think we have ever had service on that stupid phone for more than 5 minutes at a time.

I would never get any device that runs of GlobleStar sats!
already got burned once with that network.
my sat phone hardly ever works. this season when I needed a heli lift of the ice field I tried my sat phone first, after an hour of trying I gave up and used another sled to find a spot with cell phone reception.
the store that sold me the phone wouldn't take it back. I now own an $800 paper wight that costs me $50 a month.

Phone up Globestar and cancell your service. Tell them it's just cr@p, they will beg you to keep it and in the end you will get it for free. They will also try and sell you a spot or meridian. Mine has been way more miss than hit this year, but at least it doesn't cost me anything.

already tried that. after spending 45 min on the phone with them I manged to talk to one of their high ranking clowns. they agreed to reduce my rate by 50%. so now I have a sat phone that still doesnt work, but it only costs me half the price.
needless to say I'm canceling my service, and never buying any product that uses that network. the BC government just dumped them as a client last year(hundreds of phones). they will continue to sell their phones as long as there are people that will buy them.

there is no refund option, and you have to sign for a full year. total scam!

SPOT starting to suck??

I loosing faith in my SPOT

If you've been watching threads having anything to do with SPOT I've been on there singing praises this whole season..peice of mind yadda yadda yadda so on and so forth....


Well I've noticed a decline in SPOT's realiability, if it gets worse I'll be on every thread having anything to do with SPOT telling everyone its a POS.


I spent 2 full days on Baker, and got 17 total tracks for both days, but my shared page only shows 4 tracks for both days.

I sent two "OK" messages and neither of them went thru, I will take partial blame for this because I was in heavy tree cover and didn't wait 20 minutes, however it was on "track" mode and should have had satelights aquired and the red light showed they went thru.



It was missing track updates on the glacier at Baker????? That sucks!

IF GLOBALSTAR's phone sucks then why would you think spot would work???

Iridium is FAR from perfect adn FAR from workign everytime...we do a significant level of testing in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, we have tried different phones, mobile and station based...

the tech for both is less than perfect, but iridium is a little better...no doubt certain areas of the country iridium is better...but no where near perfect or even close to everytime...
 
I see you can buy a brand new GLOBALSTAR on ebay for 250.00. And their loyalty plan is 19.95 /month, they should rename it the stupidity plan
 
GODEEP - After you power on, wait 3 seconds then press the check ok button. Wait 20 minutes - takes a while to aquire the sat and send the 3 messages. Make sure the front of the unit is facing up.

graveler - The new shared page only shows messages from the last 24 hours, there is no selection like on your account page.
