I think they are pretty cool. I have a friend of mine treking across a glacier from the yukon to Juno alaska. Every few days she sends a message programmed in it that says "Everythings ok just checking in" and gives there cordinates and a link to google to see where they are. pretty cool system. thinking about getting one for sledding.

How about interference of other signals. I know there is a lot of hype about having your cell phone turned off while using a beacon. Apparently it can mix the signal if both are on. Can I carry Spot while using my GPS and beacon?

I have one and it's great to be able to let my wife know that everything is OK when you're not in cell service areas. I have to come up with a way to mount it on the sled. It can take a bit of time to send the message sometimes. It needs a clear view of the sky and you can't throw it in your backpack or pocket so when I send the OK message I'd like to be moving instead of waiting for it to complete the transmission. This is only when I send the OK. If I needed help I wouldn't be moving. Not sure about the interference with beacons.

I have one and it works great

with a little preplanning and imagination the thing can do awesome stuff

When I go to Revy next I'm going to call the helicopter service up there and pre-arrange some numbers, so when I push the HELP button they'll get the message via Email and text message to come get 'Someone' at the GPS coords send in the text and Email message. It might be anyone, you, friend, or some dude that needs a chopper ride (XP owner).

When I go riding with friends I program their wives or mommies in the SPOT so they get text messages and Emails if they want. If we're late they'll know we are all OK and where we are.

I reccomend it fully, but like I said it takes a little pre-planning to use it to its max potential.

OK so I have been looking into this as well and I really want to get one (more for the wife's peace of mind) but the thing that I don't like is that is uses the Global star satellites. We have a Global Star Phone and the service is very hit and miss. We could have a signal for 5 or 10 minutes and then could loose it for 30 minutes or longer.

Is this device the same way?

If so then I don't know how reliable it can be in case of an emergency. You may think someone could be on the way but in reality no one has even received a message yet. Any thoughts on that? I don't want to spen $150 pluse service fees that has the same crapy service that the sat phone has. I don't think we have ever had service on that stupid phone for more than 5 minutes at a time.

I have used it all year and it works great. Use it to track where I went for the day, send out ok mesages to every wife/girlfriend of the guys in my group.

If used properly it works 99% percent of the time.

Most guys getting 1 of 6 signals sent thru are using the device improperly. Read the directions it will help...no really!

I keep mine in the top pocket of my pack...and all signals get thru. Although they do recommend it having a clear view to the sky.

It uses the pager side of the global star system which is much more reliable then the cellular.

Plus for 8$ a year users can purchase $100k in Seach and Resuce insurance

Rei.com sells them for $149 plus tax and shipping.

Anybody cheaper in the states?

Thanks for the reference Yamadoo

We sell the spot for $149.99 and that includes shipping (and no sales tax outside of UT). Plus, we throw in an extra set of Lithium Ion batteries so you always have a backup set. http://www.snowbigdeal.com

The SPOT should only be used with Lithium Ions, so don't buy the cheap alkalines for it. (Whereas avalanche beacons should only use the cheap alkalines & not the expensive Lithiums).

data required to make a phone call is large...to send a text (which is basically what the Spot message is), is very minimal. Any signal at all should push the message through.

Here's my x-country trek via Spot. Central Oregon to Florida and back...one mark every 10 minutes. We were HOWEVER in airplanes, and except for when coming from Vegas north, it didn't miss a single track. It needs a good view of the Southern sky, and when going north the fuselage was blocking it's perfect view.

$150 for the Spot, $150/year service, $7 one time insurance fee....letting your family know where you are and that you're ok from anywhere (basically) on or above the Earth...priceless.

My Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, and cousin all own Spots now...

Used one all season in Northern BC. Works great. Bought it at Glentel in Edmonton. Ask for Diane 780-732-3455. $169 + plan fees. Won't leave home without it.

Huh I think I may have to get one soon. No more eating out for a little while. Got to save my dollars to get one. I know they are cheap compared to other things with sledding but I need to add this to my sledding budget. I'll have one before next year.

Ordered mine yesterday from SnowBigDeal. I figure I'll goof around this summer to get the hang of it. Then get my wife one in the fall.

I have read the instruction properly over and over. I love the SPOT device, but why when I turn it on and hit the ok button, it wont work. but if I turn it on and hit the help button, it works every time. If I hit help first, then ok, the ok goes through. but never ok first. I seriously want to know what I am doing wrong. fill me in. I would like it to work properly.
