So, I was talking to this "greenie" gal.....

Just tell greenies that your sled has been modified and runs on green hydrocarbon fuel. After all, thats what color my gas is when I premix it. Just like the dihydrogen monoxide ban joke (that is H2O by the way) most of the time they have no idea that hydrocarbon fuel = gasoline, put it together with green and viola! you are changing the world! (in thier twisted view).

(Thanks for the final score data). I seem to remember that the Idaho 2 stroke would pretty much beat a stock Yamaha 4 stroke sled, without much work. Weren't several of the 4 stroke entries just 4 strokes engines with catalytic converters bolted on them, and a little tuning work? Or maybe they converted the engine to run propane or something. I agree that 4 strokes will alway beat 2 strokes when emission limits are restricted. But, I'm pretty optimistic that 2 Stroke DI, and a small catalytic and take us through the 2012 emission requirements.

It's also important to remember that the definition of pollution changes over time. The number most greenies beat on is hydrocarbon emissions. 2 strokes general suck at that. But, soon CO2 will be categorized as a pollutant. A perfectly clean, zero emission, sled (2 or 4 stroke) would put out mostly CO2 and Water. We'd still be seen polluters.

Besides DI and catalytics and fuel, what other technologies are available for cleaning up snowmobiles. Hopefully, we aren't looking at a hydrogen snowmobile.

I think you will see the same with the 2 s sleds as with the diesels, a cat and a soot can and more computer control. as for the greenies we just need a good pesticide.

Ha, I thought that would spark some interest. Sorry if the story was misleading, I wasn't arguing that the 2's were the cleanest, I was merely stating that they do well in these competitions. I think there were a couple of 2's in the contest, the rest 4's, all on ethanol, and wasn't there an electric in there, tough to beat the emisions of that one I guess. The whole fact of the matter was, she only thought that way because somewhere along the way her social ties led her that way, not because she knew any relevent information..

I think they may have roof'd my buddy, haven't heard from him yet, probably got him in some strange greenie ritual, trying to brainwash him too..

yes you are right that they make cleaner and quite 2 strokes for outboards and for snowmobiles. But you are wrong in the 2stroke vs. 4 stroke cleanliness argument. The only reason 2 strokes are around still in those arenas is due to the fact that the emissions requirements are/have been very lax compared to automotive use. This is starting to change as we are seeing with the 2008 and again with the 2010 emissions. Once they get to the point of having the same emissions requirements as auto's which are getting stricter all the time, the 2 stroke will be dead, or at least very expensive compared to a 4 stroke.

It is important for recreational users to remember that our emissions requirements were not very stringent 10 years ago. This is changing quite rapidly to become on par with 4 strokes I am not sure when that will occur, or even if it ever will. But 2 strokes are definitely not cleaner than 4 strokes.

Oh and Idaho placed 6th out of 7 competitors in emissions. It was not the cleanest.

Check out the results

Out.

What he said.
As long as there are 2 strokes, you will see a small portion of unburnt fuel blowing out of the exhaust. although injectors can control it better, it still is the nature of the 2 stroke. That is the way they run. I think the emissions are not as strict, but wait and see, they will tighten up and then the sleds get pricey.

We can discuss the emissions issue, but in the same breath We mod, use more fuel, make more power...etc.

It is funny how everyone claims that the 4 stroke is so clean..... and then they get custom exhausts. Until everyone realizes what a catalytic converter does... they are mislead. Evet a Cat. converter lets CO2 out... but it is better than CO

If you go to http://forums.thedieselstop.com/forums/http://www.dieselstop.com and discuss cat mods or deletion, it will be removed.

Runnin on Empty

Wow, I just noticed the resemblance between my comments, and Lane's words in the Dec issue of Snowest in the "Runnin' On Empty" segment. Apparantly the greenie "bandwagon" is picking up some good steam, thanks to "wanting to fit in politicians" I'm sure. I must have been raised differently, your word is your bond, and think for yourself, and all that , or maybe it's just that being raised out west here in MT, and learning that the weather has cycles and that is just how it is. After 4 and 1/2 years of college and many days of reading the most boring of scientific research reports and thesi, (is that the plural of thesis???) I can see the effect that the media has. Even if you have the most reliable of research, and it is all proven,,, if it doesn't run with the mainstream thinking, you might as well throw it away... Once you sway influential people one way and it appears to further their political career, even if they don't believe it, they will ride it out to the bitter end, isn't that how politicians make their money???? I guess all the talk and scientific research won't change anything now, the power is in their hands, and shifting it seems to be impossible. As Lane said, "I choose to be informed" I thought that is what these people took pride in, of course they know more that anyone who chooses to destroy the world by riding a snowmobile, yep... well that bandwagon is rollin and we seem to be a dying breed.....there's gotta be hope somewhere???

just my two cents

I had an interesting experience a few years ago at a meeting about the development of a new forest use plan.
I started a conversation with someone that was wearing a pro wilderness t-shirt. Come to find out a whole bunch of them had been brought to the meeting by bus. They had responded to an ad in the paper for activists to appear at the meeting. Their pay was a pizza dinner once the meeting was over. The guy knew absolutely nothing about the issues other than he was supposed to express his desire for more wilderness.
He said he didn't give a rats a$$ about the issues, he just thought it would be fun and he wanted the pizza.

ha ha, we're finding out how those bastages USE people to get their way. keep em coming, anyone else run into these "bandwagoneers"

...I looked at the above link on the snowmobiles http://www.naturaltrails.org/issues/...ml#SNOWMOBILES

....if your honest with yourself you can see why a greenie reads this and wonders "why would they allow a machine into yellowstone when you have to wear a respirator just being near one?" We all know how ridiclous this is but "you don't know what you "don't know.....I look at it as "the battle of mis-information".

...I also got a chuckle when I went to the member club section to see what Minnestota flavor this had, they listed 3 clubs and 2 of them "don't seem to exist" and the other one has a issue with muddign truck's near a river, they even show a member using an ATV for hunting!!!

...I never used to get involved but now I make it a point to send an email or voicemail to my local goverment represetatives, it's the only way they will know what the people want. Take a moment to get your list of representatives in your contact list and when you have an issue or statement you want heard you can drop a quick message. You can bet that you greenie friends have'em on speed dial!!

Think Snow!!

Wingnut, it's what the democratic party is all about. People like her are our biggest threat in this society right now. It's people with far out views that are based not on research and fact but political agendas and as you called it bandwagon riders.

Examples of such:
1) Global warming
2) Vegitarians. (We all know it's because they want to be different or stand up for something. All the while they just make them selves look like idiots that aren't enjoying the finer things in life)
3) There is more but I'll save them

Im not a vegitarian, but i have friends who are for personal reasons. They arent trying to be different or anything like that, its just a personal choice, much like if someone skis or snowboards. i think that was a pretty ignorant comment.
