see ya guys its been a slice, gotta watch the cash pretty close now which means most likely the sled may go, seeing as it may not be used this year anyways. can't afford another payment no matter how small!!

i got many parts and lots of good info off here and am sad to see it go.

Thought about this while driving tonight - I call BS.

In the end, you're talking about some set of server infrastructure that feeds ONLY 6mbps of traffic on a 12Mbps Internet LINK!

Server load balancers? LOL - there's NO LOAD.
What, 3Mbps of traffic each on some old PCs?

Those servers (if they're less that 15 years old, are capable of saturating 100Mbps link with reasonable transaction load easily, and possibly a Gigabit link no problem if they're younger. I can't see how pulling from a separate database, separate file server and painting simple web pages for vBulletin is that complex and taxing. Authentication is a one time/millisecond transaction.

6Mbps!!!!! Nada, nothing. No rocket surgery needed..

My theory: The application architecture is phuked up and has become an convenient excuse to bilk mgt into buying new toys and ultimately creating a cash cow from members.

Cost? I just paid 345.00/year on another project for a Forum service - unlimited users, unlimited forums/threads, unlimited file storage.

This is such a blatant money grab, it's disgusting.
Seriously lame.

MD.

The site currently runs on a whole lot of equipment and still has difficulty keeping up with the load. While it might be okay to run 4,000 active users off one server - to do so would assume that all requests are consecutive and not concurrent. And it's easy to estimate what you think a site might need, but to make such authoritative statements about what it would take without actually knowing what it takes makes you sound a little silly.

Wow I came looking to see a thread of the complaining over this being a paid forum and it's already 50 pages long!!!!!

All I can say is you'd probably be well advised to buy the equipment to handle this forum at 1/3 the current draw at best because making people pay for something they can get free elsewhere (Hardcoresledder, Dootalk, Arcticchat, JohnDee, Snowmobile Forum, Snowmobile Fanatics, etc, etc) is a bad business model. Just hope for you all the sponsors don't leave too once they see what their money is buying them when the audience shrinks by 3/4 or more.

I don't think you could have laid it out any simplier to them! :beer;

wow, I didn't know that. Hmm.... yet I am sure people will use them as examples about 10 or 15 more times...

From your sources:

The search giant, which acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006, has struggled to make money from the site, which allows people to post, share and watch video clips for free.

In April, analysts at Credit Suisse predicted that YouTube would lose Google around $500 million this year, but Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, said that the video-sharing site is “now on a trajectory we’re very pleased with”.
Jonathan Rosenberg, head of product management and marketing at Google, said that the number of “monetised views” of YouTube videos – that is, the number of people watching clips supported by advertising – had more than tripled in the last 12 months.

“We’re now monetising billions of views of partner videos every month,” he added.

Google has been looking at new ways to make money from the popular video-sharing site. Mr Schmidt said that the company would be experimenting with new advertising formats on the site, such as pre-roll ads, to build a bigger revenue share. Google’s chief financial officer, Patrick Pichette said these new initiatives were already helping to make YouTube more desirable for customers.

“We’re really pleased, both in terms of YouTube’s revenue growth, which is really material to YouTube, and in the not long, too-long-distant future, we actually see a very profitable and good business for us,” he said.

Hmmm, so a company that was purchased for $1.65 BILLION is not showing a profit, NOO WAY ! ! ! NEWS FLASHHHH they will be writing off losses for as long as the law allows. IF you read the whole article they go on to say that they are looking at new ways of making money and none of them apparently seem to be a fee based system AND the number of people watching clips supported by advertising – had more than tripled in the last 12 months.

and from the other source:

The company says it has been profitable by one measure -- earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA -- for the past five quarters. Zuckerberg reiterated Tuesday that the company expects to generate positive cash flow in 2010.

Note that they aren't going to a fee based system either and plan on showing a positive cash flow.

It is quite ironic to prove someone is wrong just by looking at their own information.
