I have been a diehard Yamaha owner since 1988.... Curious if anyone that read the Deep Powder Challenge article in SnoWest Mag - is considering a change of brand?

Seems that the Apex and Nytro just cant hack it do to the wieght...

I ride an Apex SE... have to say I get left behind at times even though I am a better rider then most I ride with...

But stock for stock I get killed in most situations....

So whats everyone thinking? Is Yamaha going to Lighten the Chassis? how do we persuede them to listen?

They have the Royals Royce of Sleds in my opinion... but ... I do not want to have to spend 10k more on my sled to make it compete out of the box..

what to do....

what's snowest? Ohh is that the magazine subscription i payed for?

rant over

i would take anything you read in the mag like a grain of salt. If you are not happy with the yammis i'd try something else. I don't think a lighter chassis is coming anytime soon.

I go everywhere any of my buddies ride (all the same ability) on other lighter brands, and I have a blast doing it. I have virtually no maintenance, less downtime(actually none), use less fuel - the only reason to change would be to get a 09 Yamaha!

Cant comment on the stock snowmobile, but I know what I see on the end of ropes when all us yamaha guys are riding. Cant beat the reliability of the yami's. Just my OPINION!!

Did you expect anything else???????? Yamaha has NEVER built a light weight sled, expect a "tank" when you write the first check and continue writing checks to add light weight mods and be ever so happy you are not behind a tow rope or under a helicopter...... :cool:

I wouldn't say that... the Phazer ( old phazer ) was considered one of the lightest sleds of it's time, and they sold a WHACK of them due to that fact. Also they had a great fan cooled motor that had good jam per lb of weight. Yamaha should look back at their sales back then compared to other manufacturers and see that is why they sold so many. People loved that light weight maneuverable sled. What's funny is that they build some of the lightest most and powerful quads, and they kinda brag about the wieght compared to other quads, yet the sleds are kinda porky.They also brag about how lightweight the dirt bikes are too, and the street bikes. If they shed the weight and kept the reliability factor up, there would be hands down no contest winner there. I think it would put them in the #1 sales position for sure. I love everything about my Nytro, but if it weighed anywhere close to an XP or even M sled I would be a happier camper.

Oh yah, and NO, i'm not changing any time soon. :beer;

Why doesn't snowest do a deep snow challenge with full on mods? Of ya, we all know how that would shape up.

but, would ya still ride one if you had to ride stk? no turbo.:beer;

Nope, not changing. Can't beat the relaibility. I do like the challenge of making my stock Apex go in places that the lighter sleds are going by shear riding ability. Point and shoot, won't beat them, but use sidehilling techniques, and it makes it every time!!!! Love the challenge.

Yes you are correct Veedy, I should not have used the word "never" ;) especially since I have an old 1986 Phazer with 8,000 plus miles on it and is actually really fun to ride still.... Everything is relative.
I hope I never have to ride another 2 stroke sled, ever again!!!

Here's an interesting point,a company is looking into changing the brand of snowmobile they currently use (SKI DOO ) and they are looking at the Yamaha due to reliability, so they got a couple of Yamaha's, one is a Nytro, they weighed the Nytro MTX and the 07 Rev151 with electric start,care to guess what the weight difference is? Let's have a couple of guesses.

Well, I don't know about other guys, but I loved the Nytro MTX. Have a doo XP X and love that too, but the snappy fourstroke is addicting. Rented one out in Cooke for a day and fell in love with it. Loved it so much I ordered an 09' MTX for next year. Will keep my doo as well but the Nytro I can supercharge or turbo and still have reliability. What a deal. I can have my cake and eat it too.

20lbs(tops) ?? I see their latest ad is saying they are going to be 23lbs lighter in the 4 stroke division, 10lbs of that is due to the track they are using, it's right there on the ad

yamaha needs to wake up!!

I am a die hard yamaha guy but, I am about sick of yamaha forgetting about us mountain guys. everyother brand out there spends most of there r&d money on mountain sleds. yamaha spends all of its money on short tracks and then slaps a long track on it and expects it to sell. the last time yamaha had a mountain sled was the mountain max, and that unit sold well for them. After that they went to trail sleds with long tracks. thus the reason the MM was better than the viper and rx-ton. yamaha needs to invest in the mountain sleds!!

12.7 lbs difference. So is this a tease, or are you going to tell us what it was?

So......

It's just a magazine. If your sled goes where you want it to go and doesn't break down be happy with it. I used to get infuriated back in the 80's when DIRT BIKE maag was always hacking on the Honda XR's guess what I still have an '85 XR350 with the motor never touched, suspension never touched, one new chain/sprocket combo and a couple of new tires. This was in my youth when I was more interested in beer and tail and less on bike maintenance. I have gotten better in my old age about taking care of it. Last summer I went everywhere (and a few more places) than the guys on the new KTM's. So what is my point? The 4-s Yamaha are the XR's of the sled world. You know when the skid frame is full of snow they are all heavy. I will not change from a Yamaha 4-stroke anytime soon....unless maybe Honda comes out with a new mountain sled....lol.

If I had to stay stock, I wouldn't ride Yamaha. Their sleds go good but you will get more performance for your $ with a lightweight two-stroke. (Stock that is) If you are into modding,which almost every sledhead is, there is no comparison to the boosted Yammis.

my nytro is 582.6 out of the crate, my 07 154 x was 564 fully fueled with tunnel bag, shovel, probe, and snow bungee in handle bar bag, with the powder track not the extreem now add say 25 for battery and starter 589 now add 7.4 gal.s to my nytro 48.1 thats 630 or 41 pounds differance or 66 pounds without the e start. still not going to sell my nytro its extreamly fun to ride but keep it realistic
