This thread made me think about my recent experience:
I had an eye opening experience on the mountain the other day with my son. I am realizing I have been a selfish dad by not taking my boy out riding enough over the years. He is now 15 and can't hang on the mountain. The times I have taken him I have wanted him to have a good time, so I protected him somewhat from what I knew would be difficult. (one of the problems with many kids, IMO....their parents have never, or rarely, allowed them to fail.....they get trophies for participating!) Well...I had the video rolling the first time out, thinking I could see what he was doing afterward and help him correct things. When I listened to myself pull up to him after his first and second stuck, his first time in deep, bottomless pow, I was very disappointed in myself! The harsh tone of my voice and how I talked to him, not encouraging him enough, would make me not want to try, or fail, if I were him. I purposefully kept the video on the next couple times we rode, and noticed I was a much better teacher, and father. So....maybe think about video taping yourself as a teacher, you might learn a lot yourself, about yourself!
