SLP can HOT

So I got my first ride in yesterday in 3 ft of fresh and all seemed to be going well until I got about 7 miles in and noticed a funny smell. Lifted the hood and low and behold my chain case cover was on fire. Quickly extinguished with snow. This 07 dragon 700 has 2200 miles on it and no problems. It appears the can got so hot the ceramic coating burned off and melted nearby plastic and you can see baffle outlines. Any ideas? Can the can get clogged somehow. I ordered a new plastic cover so no big deal and will heat shield it as well but why now? Also was thinking about denting the can away from the chain case for more clearance. Any thoughts. Thanks

Did you check out your exhaust for a mouse or bird nest before your first trip of the season? Critters like small dark spaces for nests which can plug up your can. Yes, definately put heat tape on that plastic chain case cover. There was also a recall or TSB for the dealer to install a metal bracket on the bottom of the cover to prevent warping.

PLASTIC CHAIN-CASE COVER

On the bold,

As long as you're replacing the chain-case cover, I'd get the newer METAL cover off of the 2008, 2009 models.

POLARIS engineers with a college degree + a Master's degree in Thermo-Dynamics and it took only one season out there in the real world to realize that plastic, when placed in the vicinity of something that occasionally gets a little hot, melts.

I would not put another plastic one on, even with the stock exhaust, I.M.O.

Had that problem before..It seems that when i put the 2'' track on with 19-41 gears it happen,,compare to a inch and quarter track..can dont seem to get hot anymore..dont know why

Thanks for the response. Mouse nest has to be the cause...lil bastards. Makes total sense being stored in my barn! I guess now I have to figure out if the can is completely ruined. Guess I'll call slp and pick their brain. Good idea on the metal cover. Have to look in to it.
