SlowWest

All the servers and computing power in the world won't fix a bad database... why does this keep happening? Thought this problem was fixed a while ago.

Throwing more power at a problem isn't always the solution.

Christopher - I hear and share your frustration. With 1000+ registered users at any given time, I bet you have a funding source at your fingertips should you need it.

Is there a "plan b" if simply adding a turbo doesn't make it handle better?

;-)

The site needs a pair of high speed dedicated internet servers. We have known what we needed and wanted for quite some time now.

But I am stuck in a holding pattern waiting for authorization to purchase, install and setup those servers. Each time I think we are ready to do it, obstacles have arisen.

Until such time as I have permission, authorization, instruction from Harris Publishing to proceed, I am stuck here, suffering from the server crunch just like every other member of the site.

I really really thought it would have been resolved by now! I know my appologies don't mean much at this point, but I have nothing else to offer until corporate makes a final decision on how they want me to proceed with solving the problems.
Well, how about we toss all the "upgrades" to the forum and clean up the current servers, put it back to the way it was, and once the new servers are approved and online, then make the upgrades and reinvent the wheel.

Cart before the horse comes to mind.

And I'm not just trying to be a smartazz about this, it's getting so bad that I hardly even post or read on here anymore. Got database errors today, slow even during non peak hours, and getting worse by the day. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG BESIDES THE HARDWARE. Strip the thing down a few notches and let it breath a little.

If your running the server at or beyond it's limits to try and get Harris to buckle and buy new equipment use it as an example, but get the forum back to running decent again before you drive everybody that actually contributes decent info to this forum away and there is no longer a need for upgraded equipment or shinny objects (not that I necessarily think there was to begin with).

I'm spending more and more time on www.h2oregon.com as I wait for pages to load. Not a real competitor in any way other than drawing away us Oregon folks from posting on Snowest, but hey, it works and feels like "community" which with all the sub forums, Snowest no longer does.....

(Hope this post actually posts without a glitch.....)

Hey, this thing is faster tonight. Either everyone is at the bar, polishing their sleds or admin ponied up and did something.

Yahoo. I can search and fly through the pages in 1/4 the time.

Are you being told you cannot change it back to where it was?? I've said it several times and have been told I'm on crack, sort of, but I'm sure there were 1000+ users on last winter and it's never been this slow.

Cumminsforum.com and snowmobilefanatics.com are getting a lot of my click time.

Come on guys, you have to fix this forum. I've been on this site since 2004 and this is the worst it's been.
Everytime I load a new page I see a blank white screen and a note at the bottom saying waiting on httpsnowest. It stays like this for 10-60 seconds and then quickly loads the page.
Once riding season starts there will be 10 times the traffic. Lets get it fixed so that the winter crowd can benefit from the once great snowest. There was nothing wrong with the way it was, and this is a classic case of don't fix something that isn't broke.

This was NOT a hardware or a software problem.

In this case, a person walked into the server room and REBOOTED one of our live servers without shutting down all of the open files first.

Net result.

MASSIVE CORRUPTION of the entire database sets.

It took us 3 hours to rebuild several gigabytes of SnoWest databases.

Yeah - random staff members just go into open server rooms, find production equipment and start pulling plugs. Probably executives who can't get email to work. None of the performance issues lately are in any way due to the ridiculous database and front end changes of the past year. Just stick with FireFox... ;-)

Rebuild databases? You don't have these files backed up? Wow.

Home-brew Data Centers are over-rated. CLONE wars:
(note the fashion-plate Barracuda, 7940g, music-on-hold radio and commercial kitchen racks. LOL.)

Mule - now, you're digging deep. I think that would be the 2 charecter LED that was supposed to indicate the number of HDs in the chassis in case you *forgot*. LOL. Just a good pic I found on google images; can't claim it for my own.

that makes me think back and laugh lol...two years ago my aussie plumbing partner and i was fixing the hot water heating fins in a fairly large tax office....well my partner not wanting any obstructions just started unplugging cords from outlets above the fin we were working on or replacing....a little bit later all the staff started hollering to their manager that they lost all there clients information etc that they were working on...the clients were present as it was tax time etc....the manager hastily starts hacking at his computer as well and checking everything out...server was down etc etc...anyway the manager tracked everything down to my aussie partner unplugging everything and said to my partner...what the hell are you doing..!!!...my partner who was not quite aware of what interruptions to computers can do responded...oh its ok i only unplugged the stuff for a few minutes....i laughed it was priceless..!!

Plumbers. Enemy of low-voltage cabling.
A plumber and a cordless drill can cause more damage in a house or commercial structure than a pack of hungry mice.

These can be used for both data centers and for containing rogue plumbers!

Its sad to watch this site go down in flames ! this used to be my favorite site, and spent a couple hours here each day, now i find myself coming here less and less,if i'm looking for something in particular, I just google it, 3x as fast as searching Slowest !!!:(:(:(
