Slides in the North Bighorns

Was riding in the Burnt Mountain area and we saw 3 avalanches saturday and talked to some other riders in the Wagon Box area and they also saw 3 so be careful when riding in this area.

Myself and four others in my group were actually in the second picture when it slid on saturday. There were three guys from Minnesota that were there too, one of them got hit by the slid but wasn't burried too bad, he was able to stand up himself but we had to dig his sled out. We were all equiped with becons, probes, shovels, etc.. and we actually thought the hill was pretty safe because you could see tracks that were already on it under the last snowfall, but that goes to show to be more carefull. We were all pretty nervous after that happened but glad everyone came out alright. After that we saw two more slopes that slid earlier that day, so everyone be safe out there.

yeah we were out there last weekend also and seen the slide in the first pic. definately goes to show that places that dont normally slide are unstable

...we actually thought the hill was pretty safe because you could see tracks that were already on it under the last snowfall...

There was a fella killed in Cooke last weekend with the same circumstances.

Tracked hillsides are more dangerous than untracked - they give you a false sense of security.

Glad everyone came out of that OK.
Having all the equipment is 50% of being prepared. Attending an avalanche safety class is the other half. We attended one last month that was put on by Mike Duffy up in Dubois and it was extremely informative and a real eye opener. We don't do much extreme riding but 90% of our riding is boondocking and the info we got from that class really made us more aware of where we're riding and what to look for. I would highly recommend avy courses for everyone in the back country.
That was a 4 hour class and cost 40 bucks so it's not cost prohibitive and well worth the time.

That second picture is of death hill west of bear... that's a STEEP HILL!!! GETS STRAIGHT UP AT THE TOP AND ALWAYS WIND OFF THE TOP! Be careful on that, a buddy of mine, his son was buried there a few years back on that same hill. I was on that about 3 weeks about about 3/4ths the way up top turned out and just got stuck. scared me for sure. the wind was blowing so hard off the top just building a cornice off that. Be AWARE! RIDE SAFE! They are in the horns too!

slide

First picture was caused by my friend on Friday the 16th......It was a real EYE Opener:eek:. It can happen anywhere if the conditions are right. Be prepaired for anything.
