SLEDDERS DIE IN AN AVALANCHE.....

because they didn't take an avy awareness class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I have your attention...

For anyone who has not taken an awareness course...I challenge you to give me a reasonable, sane answer as to why not?

*Do you really believe you NEVER ride in avalanche terrain? How do you know?

*Do you really believe you already know everything you need to know?? (we have volunteered to assist 7 or 8 classes in the last 3 seasons and I learn something EVERY class).

*Do you really not have anyone in your life that will be devastated when your body has to be recovered from the mountain? Really?? (I bet your mom, dad, wife, husband, brother, sister, boyfriend, girlfriend, best friend, etc... will tell me otherwise!!)

*What about your riding partners? Are their lives not worth ONE DAY of training? Is your life not worth that much to them? (if the answer to this question is no, then you will NEVER ride with us!!).

Bottom line...nobody who rides in the mountains has a legitimate excuse to not take a class.

:amen: Brent, thanks for the reminder, you can never have too much knowledge. "No matter how BAD you are, the mountains are BADDER". :hail: If you haven't taken a class the only way you can learn is to have an "EXPERIENCE" and it usually isn't a good one. :face-icon-small-sad

The intentions of this thread is to one) get you to think about this and take a class. two) to hopefully get some honest discussions and answers as to why you do NOT take a class. :noidea:

Our only intent here is to get more people informed and educated. People have been asking for these classes, begging actually. Now we have a full winters schedule lined up with low attendance. Help us help you! Give us your reasons please. :help: This is not to judge anyone, this is to gather information that can help mold the future of ASAP and avy classes here in Washington. :high5:

These guys have put a lot of time, effort and heart into making a really kickassssss cirriculum focused on snowmobilers. This is an asset to Washington State that really should be taken advantage of! :loco:

There is a class this weekend in CleEllum with a few open spots left. You won't regret the decision to sign up... here, I'll make it easy for you ..\/

Clicky directly to sign up/registration!

Cle Elum is a bit of a haul from me. I know..that shouldn't be an excuse. Truth is, I just moved to WA and want to take an avy course. Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know of anything or places I can look to find locations of other classes? I'm located in Southern WA, Trout Lake to be exact.

class in seattle

Seems like it would get more people interested if there was a class offered in seattle. I work for a safety training company and could Get a cheap rate if I could get some instuctors.we had talked about it last week. If your an avy instructor pm me maybe we can get the ball rolling

Have a traveling/sponsored class that goes to each sled club's meetings. Clubs might get more membership out of it too. (if so desired)

That would be great...ASAP has reached out to a lot of clubs. Unfortunately, the clubs have too many politics and too large of egos to bring in an outside instructor. Frustrating!! :face-icon-small-con

more info??

who would be good to contact at ASAP? looking around bellingham and puyallup and cle elum are the closest snowmobile avy training classes. Everything closer trains for"ALL Types of training" climbing,Skiing,hiking...... Wait they missed one?:face-icon-small-dis If people could do a day of classroom without having to travel then do a full day up on the mountain in the snow. We have two classrooms, the big one holds 30- 35 people. Is there a standardized curriculum instructors use?

The problem in the past has been participation. We have tried to accomodate requests for classes in a specific area and the response has not been enough to fill a class. Unfortunately, it's not enough to just book a space and anounce a date...there needs to be enough students to cover costs. THere is time and planning that goes into puting on a class...expenses, and time and travel for the instructors, etc...

If you want to help coordinate a class, that would be GREAT!! Send me a PM and let me know what you are thinking.

Thanks!!

Sorry, not to sound confrontational, I've never really like bomb throwers...

I would think that a more accurate statement would be because of dumb decisions, rather than lack of exposure to information. After all, it's not the dumb action that kills, it's the dumb decision to take the dumb action that kills. Folks make dumb decisions all the time, dispite having the knowledge to make better choices.
I wonder what the percentage really is between those that lost a life with avy education, and those that had none. Anyone know?

Thanks, Bag

So based on your statement, education is a waste of time since some people are going to make bad decisions anyway?? Is this your rational for not giving yourself the knowledge to make good decisions?

Like I said in my original post..."give me a reasonable, SANE reason"...still waiting.

Hey, easy. I didn't say anything bad about classes or education, not sure where you came up with that statement, but it's not accurate.
What I said is people still make bad decisions. For example, smoking, driving under the influance, unprotected sex, riding in wilderness, listening to rap (:face-icon-small-hap) ... etc.
I wasn't bashing your class or your efforts.
Your assumption that I don't seek out the information and knowledge that I need isn't correct either, not sure where that came from...

Let's start over.
I appreciate the effort you make in advancing knowledge of snow conditions, reactions to those conditions and preparing for them.
Not crazy about your thread title.
If I offended you, it wasn't my intention.
I thought it was ok to discuss differant ideas and ask questions, but that's cool too.
Please read my statement and take a breath and keep up the good work. I won't bother you any more.

Good stuff guys.. and I don't like "bomb throwers" either.

Personally, I can't think of a reasonable, SANE reason to NOT educate ourselves. That being said even the most educated among us choose unwisely at times. People with knowledge still make bad choices. Difference being .. IMO .. with education more often the bad incidents are the result of a choice, not an accident. I like choice:)

IMHO .. We (mountain riders) ... every one of us ... should educate ourselves to the associated dangers. With this education we will have more tools available .. tools needed to better identify sketchy conditions / situations .... This knowledge makes the educated rider take pause and closely weigh the risk / reward before diving in. Much better than cowboy'n it and hoping for the best.

Get educated, ride smart, HAVE FUN and live to ride again!

Bagger,

If I'm a little short, it's because over and over and over we hear sledders begging for avalanche education, and classes are planned, and then nobody shows up. And then an avy happens and sledders die, and the whole process starts again.

The thread title was intentional to get people to look. If you dont like my methods, I'm open to other ideas to expose more sledders to avy awareness education...I'm all ears.

If you didn't want to be confrontational, you could have just asked the question...rather than being confrontational.

Mod,

First, I really wan't bashing your efforts. Really. I admire them.
Second, assumptions are really dangerous..... isn't that sort'a what we are talking about, folks assuming it won't happen to them? It's safe? They don't need classes?
Third, you are trying to modify human nature. Sure hope you packed a lunch! Changing peoples nature is a tough, tough business and requires a ton of patience and tolerance.
My hat is off to your efforts. Please don't stop.

To answer your question, I hear sex sells. . . how do you look in a thong and a beacon? :face-icon-small-sho

For your hard data request ... my reasons for not going most yrs:

1. I've been to two classes before (and now know it all:devil:)
2. They are expensive
3. I am busy
4. Not enough single hot ladies at the classes!

I do plan to try and make one per season... so where was that schedule again?

I'm thinking this is a pretty good (common) list of reasons for all of us. (Except the hot ladies for me, I bring my own!)
So if people aren't going because of the above reasons, you need to figure out a way to
1. Make the classes new, fun and talked about.
2. Find a way to help fund the cost so they are more reasonable to the average folks.
3. Structure them somehow so that they aren't viewed as competing for limited play time.

I wish you the best of luck and would be more than willing to help, so if there is a way I can help spread the word please let me know and I will.
