sled cop stories?

Yeah, I am sure all of us sleds heads have had similar experiences with bizarre people, situations, etc. I personally have even saved a few peoples lives over the years and I'm NOT even a cop. Imagine that!

Part of the reason I snowmobile is to get away from people like you, no offence. It just another set of rules being jammed down your throat for what??? So I can feel safe from who exactly...??? the 60 year old riding their junk piles on the trail. Sorry man it just adds to the atmosphere.

As far as people doing stupid stuff on their snowmobiles with their kids what business is it of yours? I see stupid stuff every single time I ride. I see it in the parking lot before I start riding, after riding on the way home, etc.

You would be wise to read.

Denver cop gets gun taken away by sledder.

Its been some years back and not my story but will do my best to recollect.

Denver Colorado big snow storm what was that 5 years ago??? Anyway I guess there was some Police man that lived across the street from a avid sledder.

Big storm no traffic moving the sledder gets his sled out and uses it. Off duty cop is furious and has a confrontation with him in the street regaurding illegal use of sled on streets. (Must of been some prior friction between these two I would guess)

Anyway story goes it escalated to the off duty cop pulling his gun on this guy and it so happend the sledders brother was there and over powered the cop taking his gun until authorities arrived!

Anyway I am sure someone else can collaborate this better than I. I wonder what ever happened to the cop??

Man I wish that story would have went the other direction... like the sledder ended up helpingthe officer save some preschoolers from a thug somehow haha

You are such a moron I can't believe it. He has to write tickets for sleds not being registered because those registration fees are what keep our trails groomed. And as rush pointed out, saving a kid from getting killed/seriously injured how is that not helping people??

MY first incounter with DNR was in W yellowstone half mile west of town. I opened it up on that first straightaway then as I get up to speed I see a guy coming out of the woods. I am thinking this guy is lost or stuck and needs some help. Then I see he has a green suit with a radar gun in his hand"O CRAP" this guy is pissed ! He says " DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE SPEED LIMIT IS HERE?" i reply "THERE IS ONE? I AM FROM NORTH DAKOTA WE DRIVE THEM 100 THERE ALL THE TIME!" This probably was not the best answer....dont remember how much the ticket was but it was costly.

Got pulled over in the same spot back in 99. I knew better since I was a guide out there at the time but had a day off and was heading out to meet some buddies at red caynon and was not watching my speed. Normally always warned my groups that we are going to slow it down in certain areas because of the speed traps. So I see him step out of the woods start slowing down and stop right next to him. I didn't even have to use the brakes to come to a stop that is how far away i let off. He comes up and starts talking to me and I tell him i was just heading out for a ride on my day off and that I wasn't paying attention to my speed. He says how us guides are really good about keeping the speed down( little did he know that we only did that in ther speed trap zones) and tells me he clocked me at 56 mph. He proceeds to write a ticket right after he thanked me for doing a good job with guided tours!!!!He says that he just pulled over one of our shop kids and had him at 92 mph. So when I asked him how big my ticket was he says $50 and then asked him how much for going 92? He say's $50!!! same price for 47 mph over to 11 mph over!!!Told him next time I am going to really crank it up if the tickets are the same price!!! Would never have stoped but had my guide sled and he would have been able to track me down that way!!! Have ditched them many times since out there on private sleds. Still slow down when I get close town most of the time!!!

We have a lot of sled cops here, in fact it often is a factor to where we are riding that day, just to avoid the hassle. They have nothing productive to do but hassle people and waste tax payer dollars. It truly bothers me. Some days they will have 2-6 sheriffs on sleds and 2-4 USFS LEO's on sleds in the same area. WTF is there a man hunt going on I don't know about? Do you not want us here? It's like a game of hide and seek sometimes just getting out to the woods to ride.

They typically want to bother you about tags, make sure you know the boundarys(wilderness & watershed BS), tell you your sled is too loud, tell you that you need a hood and headlights "for safety" even though it's June and your the only truck in the parking lot, your drive liscence is expired here's a $475 ticket, "did you hit any dirt?, you don't want a soil displacement ticket." I've met guys from nearby areas that won't come ride here because of it and I think more people would likely be out riding without them and spending more money in throughout our local economy if it werent for them IMO.

I've been cited for not having a tailight, and another for not having headlights, and it was day light out, that is how big of a joke they are. Mind you I ride a mtn mod sled that will never see more then a mile or two of trail, riding trail sucks anyway so we normally space out and take it easy. We have whoops the size of VW bettles on most the trails anyway so going fast gets old in a hurry. How about spending that USFS money on some grooming? Maybe spend those cops salary on some more plowing so people aren't always getting stuck in the unplowed parking lot.

As far as my light tickets I could understand if we had a complex fast trail system with lots of people out riding it but we don't and it was during the day. Most days we boondock all day, so maybe 6 hrs spent riding in the woods, maybe 20 minutes on trail. For me that doesn't warrant concern for my sleds trail compality sorry maybe I'm just a boondocking snob.

The worst part is that they just wait a mile or two from the parking lot where they know guys will have to ride to get to their trucks, sp they can stop and hassle people. Some days they have one of their sleds parked in the middle of the trail to get people to stop for them.

A C A B

Nice

That's what I love about this forum, the highbrow, intellectual discussions but most of all the name calling.:face-icon-small-win

As far as registrations paying for grooming in the old days it was called breaking trail. Not everybody needs a granny trail to ride.

Some of us belong to snowmobile clubs that preceded snowmobile registrations and groomed our own trails with our own equipment. Not everybody wants to go along with your vision of the world.

In addition reg fees, tabs fees and parking fees (always increasing) are being stolen from sledders by gov't officials (i.e. police enforce the laws) all while they continue to close riding areas to sledders.

WA State Legislature poised to steal our snowmobile fund money

http://news.snowmobilealliance.org/...re-poised-to-steal-our-snowmobile-fund-money/

As far as snowmobile related deaths/injuries here is 13 years of data from New York State:

http://nysparks.com/recreation/snowmobiles/documents/0910SnowmobileAccidentSummary.pdf

They have sled cops in NY State, why is the number of accidents and fatalities not going down?

I would be more supportive of sled cops if they actually did something. Where is the evidence? All I hear is heresy and anecdotal stories about how great sledcops are. Whenever I have been personally been in a jam I see SARS (local volunteers), average sledders helping. Occasionally I see local law enforcement (usually there to assign fault/charges).

You don't need sleds cops to have a safe/good day on the mountain. They can say or do whatever they want to justify their existence.

It's a MONEY GRAB plain and simple.

That's all you got is FEAR of dying/injury?? I gave that up along time ago.

It's called self rescue, SARS or sled buddy!

By the way crashed my sled down a washout sledding alone one time several years back. 8 miles walkout at night minus 20 Celsius. Went back a couple of days later with friends and towed it out. :face-icon-small-ton

I am sure if the cops were there I would have got some kind of a ticket for something/anything. Have to get paid and justify their existence.

Not positive how others feel about your wild political views but I'm no where near your boat. I can remember the old grade school saying - "if you don't have anything nice to say... stop posting full on negativity on another guys post about funny inconsequential run ins with the law" I can't count how many times I've heard that

coming home late last spring from Lincoln due to sled running out of gas and needing a tow home. Brake and blinker lights work fine but no running lights. Get all the way to Missoula with no running lights and state trooper pulls me over at the last exit and gives me the ol' warning. Was nice enough to even put my current registration sticker on my rear plate.

When he told me he didnt like my sled i made a move for his gun and a fight broke out.........just kidding about the last part.:face-icon-small-hap

Yea, what business is it of his if some idiotic family wants to strap their 18 month old kid to the back of their rented sled and lose the kid face down in a random snowbank somewhere on the trail. How dare he step up and help correct a possibly fatal situation. Those people wanted to kill their kid and this a-hole cop keeps infringing on their freedoms to be complete jacka$$es! WHAT A PRICK THIS GUY IS! FREAKING JACK BOOT THUG!

You know what man, you are the jerks that keep giving good community cops a bad name. Every cop to you is some high school dropout that used to be the star football captain and probably gave you swirlies in the girls bathroom for being such a whiney know it all. Yes, some cops are just mad at the world, but MOST are decent family men and women. I bet most of the FS Law Enforcement in my area don't particularly enjoy writing tickets, but guess what... it's their freaking job and most of the time they end up letting people off when the law says you deserve to be ticketed or worse.

If you want to change things then you are barking up the wrong tree, pal. Go talk to your congressman, senators, or local representatives and try to get the law changed.

Sorry for the rant!

FINALLY!!!!!! Someone on this sight that knows there are way more good cops out there than bad cops. I agree with everything you said.

I often give parking lot breaks for registrations (unloading not loading)

I graduated from college, I did not play football

I never heard of a cop pulling a gun on a snowmobiler but I have heard of a cop being run over by a snowmobiler (on purpose)

Their are only 2 of us covering the Black Hills and most times I am by myself

SD does not require a drivers license to operate a snowmobile and I do not care if you hit dirt unles you needlesly climb a hill with no snow.

I have never issued a citation for tail or headlights, Only required after dark in SD, I have talked to a few snowmobilers about the issue.

In SD snowmobile registration money can only be used for snowmobile related spending. Some have tried to divert funds but always been defeated.

What do you want us to do?

All my rescues are about safely getting people and their sleds back to safety, the only time I am looking for fault is in a crash where extreme negligence has taken place.

The money from the tickets I write go to the court system and the local school district.

The only time someone has refused my help was when I ran across a father and teenage daughter. Daughter was stuck, both sleds were unlicensed, wrote only 1 ticket to the father for no license and went to help the daughter get unstuck. Father told me to get the f@#k out of here. I reluctently honored his request.

Many years ago my parents left me alone for the weekend… new snow and it was time to fire up the 440 Chaparral and take it for a spin around the block:face-icon-small-hap. Anyway I am driving down the road and this Spokane County Sheriff, going the opposite direction flips on his light (yea it was that long ago) and rolled down his window and yelled something at me so I stopped. He started to tell me I was getting a ticket and the sled was going on the hook (he is still sitting in his car)… I fire up the sled and I am OUT OF THERE!!!:light: I remember the patrol car, with snow chains banging around, red light on, siren and in hot pursuit of my dad’s Chaparral. I hit the gas and was gone… took the long way home, got the sled back in the garage and then ran out to the street to camouflage the sled’s tracks… Funny thing is years later I was a deputy sheriff in a neighboring county chasing snowmobilers down that were riding on the road… but this time I was also on a snowmobile (always liked the look on the driver’s face when you pulled up and turned on the blue light)….:bounce:

Fast forward to now… in this area get lost or hurt don’t call the sheriff call your friends… they have the skill to come get you and get you out in one piece (my SPOT is programmed with their phone numbers). Issues with many cops these days…they are union thugs with badges:evil:… if you are cop and don’t fit that role.. cool.:face-icon-small-coo

Had one of those 440 Chaparral's. Fun fast little light sled (340lbs). The only new sled my father ever owned.

dont let that guy get under your skin, you just keep honest. and keep people safe. its not like your out in the backcountry with a radar...

its only illegal if you get caught;)

can i get them to use my registration fees to not groom anything? i find whooped out trails keep the masses out... i will gladly ride a beat up trail to get to the good riding. would love to never see another groomed trail the rest of my life. i guess they can groom around the lake to let the mt. trail riders have fun. STOP THE GROOMERS

isn't the definition of hypocrite a person who engages in the same behaviors he condems others for??? just something to think about.

Not getting under my skin at all. Sometimes people make comments that are so bizzare it can be funny. He along with others are entitled to their opinions. Thats what makes us a free country. "Most" of our laws makes us a civilized country. Dont want radar. I already have too much junk I have to carry.
