Silverton, Red Bull & Shaun White

There is definitely no missing or inconsistent snow in the San Juan's, Silverton/red mountain pass is in your face 40-55 degree slope. Definitely the closest thing to AK, in CO.

x2, Silverton is the closest thing to AK within the lower states. Someone should ask Aaron Brill with Silverton mountain how he operates the most extreme ski area in the US in such flat terrain with no snow!!!!!

The riding in Mini Haha, huricane pass and animas forks is unreal. Best steeps in the state. There is probably a reason Red Bull chose this area for thier super pipe. As to the lack of snow, there is still snow on parts of cinnamon pass from last season. Not knocking any area out there as I have had fun at "ears" and on I-70 near Vail, but this is one area that is overlooked. It;s nice to not have to battle the masses to access terrain you see in the videos. I have been here 9 years now and feel Silverton is the true "extreme" riding area.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIpBybTQLvY
Check out this short (2000ft) climb by George Marsh of Deviant sledworks out of Durango, CO!!!!!!!!

You guys are funny.

Is there a way to install a sarcasm meter on each post, so people don't have to think in order to recognize it????

We're gonna have to go ahead & get one of those installed emmkay!

Yep, most snow in the state is in the south, fluffiest too! So go there. We won't mind the snubbing and just get by with our crappy snow :D

HA HA! We do need snow bad.

I really hate the low snow conditions and that 20 minute drive north to RE. Can't wait for the forum ride to get some good snow.

Hopefully it turns cold again. If so, it should not be long before we can ride the Silverton area. Here is a shot from this weekend.

What hills? I don't see no stinking hills? If snow will stick to it I won't even ride it!

The owner of Silverton MTN is a prick. Met him once. He's really into himself. The riding there is sick but it really depends on your guide. My experience was pretty good condsidering it was my first winter out here. I would much rather go cat skiing at monarch.

Let's see... Rabbit Ears:
Icy Roads, Getting up at 5 am to get there and find a parking spot,Forest Rangers giving tickets, usually snowing, wind blowing, crowded, not alot of big hills, tracked up...

Wolf Creek:
25 min to the top, blue skies, most snow in CO, no wind, never see a USFS, might see 2-3 groups all day..

HMMMM.....

At least you get to pick on some Artic Cat riders at the Ears! LOL

Sure ya do kid;)

Monarch's cat skiing looks fun, but it's like 900 vertical drop. Silverton's over 3,000, not to mention a ride back to camp in a 1950's milk truck

The runs are real short but you will get in over a dozen. No doubt the 50's milk truck is cool. It broke down when i was there.

Last year i did the Keystone cat trip (with my retired parents) and would highly recommend it as a family outting. Not as extreme but done up very well for all capabilities.

Yea Silverton sucks.. Vail pass is much better!!

But if you find yourself up there I would stay with Pete at the bent elbow http://www.thebent.com/. He is snowmachine friendly and can point you in the right direction.

Or if you are into huts the treasure mtn hut is worthy... http://treasuremountainhut.com/

But then again you wont go up that way caus silverton sucks... Yep I think only the CB and Irwin area may suck worse..

Also if there is snow the Monarch cat and terrain will show you a good day (for real)..

Silverton will make your sack retract into your torso. That being said, if your balls are big enough as to not get sucked into your body, then Silverton is for you. I went there quite often on my first sled-'02 Meadow Max. I tell ya, I'm lucky to be alive!! Thank god my first sled wasn't a real MTN sled or I'd be dead. Now then, hopefully that scared you away....................
