Sicamous avalanche

Was that at the superbowl? Just above morton lake? Thats what i heard

Thats what I heard too, we rode Owls Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. A ton of snow had fallen. The snowpack was very unstable in the days prior, we never left the trees and meadows all week. There was 4-5 feet of fresh snow up there when we got up Wednesday morning.

R.I.P. Condolences to his family and friends.
Kudos to those of you that helped out with the search. :beer;:beer;

If you dont have avy gear, stay home until you do :face-icon-small-sad

the slide must have been at least a 6' slab that broke near the top of a steep hill, it slid right down to the rocks. there was still a little snow at the top so we all had our beacons on transmit.

my best to the family and friends, RIP brother sledder.:brokenheart:

I saw that the day before, I stopped in the parking around 5 pm to see if Mitch was up there, he must have been with U.
Lots of temp change, wind etc, etc throughout the days prior.

I'm getting tired of posting this but here goes again.....
Prayers to the victim and his family!

When are guys gonna wake up and realize it doesn't just happen to someone else ??? Why can't people stay away from the hills for awhile ????

My thoughts exactly. Stay home and live to ride another day. Not to mention the grief you leave behind for your wives, parents, kids, families etc.

yea there beacons were on send...the kid didn;t have anything to transmit..the searchers on send incase they got caught in second avalance...

even if one cannot afford a beacon how about the cloths that have them built in??? We always have a spare beacon, but for someone who doesn't ride reg with a beacon probably has no idea how to use it so you are putting your lives in the hands of someone who has very little idea of how to find YOU:eek: if you go under,,,I think It should be MANDATORY for an avy course with the sale of all sleds...and you cannot pick up the sled without the certificate...Level one is good but its much better to take the next few steps and go up a notch or two
learn how to read the crystals and snopack and such, how to dig a trench properly takes an extra 10-15 min..whats that compared to adding 40 years to your life????Pray for the families of ALL affected by this..to the one who did not come RIP:face-icon-small-sad

I totally agree with your tread! A beacon and avy course would of made his chances a whole lot better today. Maybe being a newbie he was not informed. Talked to a guy after we found him and it really hit me! He said " I was watching theses guys playing in this bowl and I was going to approach them and tell them it's dangerous to play there,... but the slide came down before I had a chance.... Avalanche awareness! My heart just sank when I heard this! If only! Hat's off to the guy that was thinking that! I commend you! And I challenge any one else that has the guts to tell someone else on the hill to get off! It's too avy risky! You might piss them off, but you might save their life! It's pretty disheartening to dig out a local sledder after 3 or four hours of being covered up under 5 feet of snow because he only thought like me, he only wanted to go out and have a lot of fun on a Sunday afternoon.

I am thinking of presenting a motion to the local clubs to make it mandatory for riders to have beacons at least, or they don't ride the trails! Avy packs would be even better but beacons could be a start! What do you guys think? feedback????

The Clubs have a hard time collecting trail fees let alone trying to stop some one that does not have a beacon ..clubs can not stop anyone from going on too crown land..

Way cheaper avy course's ($100/$150) or less
would be a start??

Seriously??? $200-250 is too much for a course??? If you can't afford that, how can you afford a becon... or better yet a sled and fuel, gear, helmet etc?

The cost of the courses isn't the limiting factor in getting educated... it is lack of motivation to take the course... get people motivated (by not letting the purchase a new mountain sled until they are certified or not letting them on the hill without safety gear)

The scary thing is that in our litigious society, someone will try to sue the local sledding society after an accident saying that it was their responsibility to make sure the riders using their trail/riding area weren't warned of the safety needs that were required up on the hill... mark my words that this is going to happen one day!

RIP!:brokenheart: I hate hearing these! Please ride safe and make these threads stop!!!

RIP

my 2cents beacons, probes, courses, finding out latest conditions, it still all goes back to common sense, and it's "NOT COMMON" any more, went to avy days in revy on friday and saturday, and yes it's high extreme but you can ride in areas that are safe, learned a few things at boulder saturday, ducked out sunday morning just in case the roads are closed going back to calgary, thought we catch quartz, paid are trail fee ask the guy the avy danger , he says high and no one rode there on saturday because of highway closures, got back in there fresh untouched powder, stay in the meadows and trees, one of the guys in our group dug a snow pit right to the ground, conditions look good for the first 5 feet, last 2 feet was the corn snow right to dirt, saw about 4 different slid areas, and to our amazement there was groups of guys pounding some of the hills, and we shoke our heads and decided to head down rather be a witness to stupidity. done and looking forward to another day of riding.
