Sicamous avalanche

It was one of my buddies who hit him with his probe. One of my other buddies dug down to him and helped haul him out from underneath his sled. He was telling me that the young guy even had "SOS" on the peak of his helment but did not have a beacon. RIP

Terrible to hear, but in all honesty if you were going to pick 1 weekend out of the last 10 years to stay home in southern BC.....this was the one.

The last thing I want to do is come off as a jackazz, but if you were voluntarily in any kind of avy terrain this weeked, you are either completely in the dark or just don't care.

All the coulda shoulda in the world doesn't fix it tho unfortunately....RIP

yep..^^^...prayers..and thanks to those that recovered him..wished he wasn;t sledding there ..still someone..someone knew this kid was unprepared...no beacon..? etc ?..should have been sledding in the parking lot.

Sad to hear!!! prayers for family, friends and those involved...not easy to deal with this!!!

Poor guy. We were sledding in the trees 5 min from the slide but didn't know about it for 15 or 20 min. Must of probed for three hours. I'm glad we found him but a very sad ending. My heart goes out to his small child, his girl friend and family. RIP

hardest decision I had to make, but recently sold everything to do with sledding. I read a post like this and many others and glad I did make the decision. RIP

just to let everyone know, only people with beacons (on send) were searching in the slide area.

This is a scary statement. Were the searchers out of their minds (adrenaline pumping too fast to think) or did they not know how to use their beacons?

Condolences and prayers to friends and family.

This is very tragic. I am just speechless as to why someone would go in the backcountry without the basic equipment.

My condolences to everyone who knew him.

I was also there, frirst on the scene actually, and the first thing that they told me was he didn't have a beacon. all searching was done by probe lines. the searchers were calm and organized and I give kudos to all searchers involved in this horrific event. the 2 not caught in the slide did not leave, period. one left for 2 minutes to come down to the meadow below to get my group to come help. they both searched for their friend for the entire 3 3/4 to 4 hours, to the point where medical services had to attend to 1 of them on the mountain.

bad one in prince george as well..

ENDERBY, B.C. — One person is believed dead and another missing after two groups of snowmobilers were hit by avalanches in separate areas of British Columbia Sunday.

RCMP in Chetwynd B.C., northeast of Prince George, say a group of 14 snowmobilers were hit by a snowslide in a remote mountainous area shortly after 2 p.m.

Constable Craig Douglass says two of three riders hit by the slide were able to free themselves, but the third person is believed to be dead.

Attempts to retrieve the deceased won't be tried before Monday morning at the earliest.

Earlier, an avalanche struck three other snowmobilers on Mara Mountain near Enderby in the province's interior, leaving one of the riders missing.

In the Enderby avalanche, police were notified of an emergency beacon shortly after 1 p.m., said Vernon RCMP spokesman Gordon Molendyk.

“Shortly after, two other snowmobilers who were out made contact and said they had been involved in an avalanche and they had to leave one of their companions behind,” said Mr. Molendyk.

Search-and-rescue teams were at Mara Mountain on Sunday but called off the search as night fell, Mr. Molendyk said.

Two avalanche technicians have been sent to the area, and will help assess whether it's safe to resume the search on Monday morning.

Police didn't release any details about the missing man or the two survivors, but RCMP planned to provide more information on Monday.

There have been 11 people killed in avalanches in the B.C. backcountry in the past several weeks, including one that buried eight snowmobilers late last month near Fernie.

In that case, three others in the group had to leave their friends behind because of the risk of more avalanches.

Last week, an avalanche near Terrace, B.C., in the northern part of the province, killed an American snowboarder who was freed from the snow but later died in hospital.

And a pair of separate avalanches at Whistler Blackcomb — the first on New Year's Eve and then another on New Year's Day — left two people dead. Both victims at the resort were in out-of-bounds areas.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has had warnings in place for some time for most of southern B.C., including in the area of Sunday's avalanche.

The latest incidents come as the centre mounts a public awareness campaign about the dangers of avalanches and the importance of heeding its warnings.

I guess I misunderstood when stalefish said only searchers with beacons on send were searching the slide area. I took it as they were searching with beacons on send not receive. My apologies.

apology accepted. the facts are always sketchy at this point. it was a rough day to say the least.

yea there beacons were on send...the kid didn;t have anything to transmit..the searchers on send incase they got caught in second avalance...

Sorry to hear about this tragedy!!!!

Good on you fella's for keeping level heads and doing a probe line to find the poor fella!!!

The last couple years have been quite unstable here in B.C. and it's been a gamble day in and day out!!!! This isn't Alaska we do not have stable temperatures to make a stable snow pack!!!!

It makes me so sad to hear about this sort of thing!!!! I'm glad I have an extra beacon to lend out in such situations.... I know since I took and Avy course thanks to EW I find myself preaching to the point it makes people sick....

The more I know the more unsafe I feel in the back country........

After loosing a friend so early into the sledding lifestyle it has humbled me to the core......

I feel like my sled keeps me off the mountain due to it's inopportune time's of failure.... not to mention parts delay's.... Which seem to keep me down annualy....

I feel as though I've missed out on something this year waiting for my sled to be ready to ride...... It's been getting alot of prime tweaking and upgrades so I hope it's ready when everything is ready...... And I again feel like i've been kept off the mountains to date....

Be safe folks..... Do some mods and tweak them sleds for some mid season/spring riding...... It's been getting harder and harder seeing all of these accidents lately and even considering heading out to the play zones that we frequent so often........

they told us to leave our beacons on "send" in case of another slide. least thats what i was told to do. also thank you to the people that took charge and kept us all working together.

details do get mixed up and i'll try not to get the story twisted around.
