Shotgun for Pheasant and/or ducks

Just got back from Sportsman's and looked at the 870's. Going to buy an Express but man I wish I could afford the Wingmaster. That thing is sweet looking. Even all the salespeople there recommended the 870, especially for the price. Plus Remington has $30 off rebate going on now, too. They all felt great, though.

Not to highjack the thread, but since there are a number of knowledgable folks here, can somebody recommend a decent "entry level" over/under gun? Currently I've got a Remington 1100 semi-auto, but would like to get another shotgun. I've always been a big fan of Berettas and Benellis, but I don't really want to drop $1000 or more on a gun that I probably won't shoot that often.

Oh, and if it makes any difference, I'm a pretty small guy. 5' 9", about 145 lbs.

look at a low-end browning for an o/u gun... there's a few that you can find in the 800-850 range... i think even beretta makes one in that price range...

I shot an 870 Wingmaster for years. A hand-me-down from my grandpa. Gun was built in 1971. Had the 28" fixed full choke taken out to modified so I could shoot steel. Bought a 26" IC to shoot birds with. Gramp's (r.i.p.) & I have shot thousands of rounds through that gun. They definitely are built good. That gun still does me right.

2 years ago I bought an autoloader. Bennelli SBE II to be exact. It's a fun gun to shoot but I don't kill any more birds with it.

You won't go wrong buying an 870.

X - looking forward to seeing your beer gut. And you made me laugh with the "short stroking" comment. I have been all twisted up in the duck blind with heavy clothes on and have pulled the trigger on shot number 2 more than once... "click".

Haven't priced one in awhile but a less expensive O/U might be a Ruger Red Lable.

Thanks for the advice guys. Don't worry, I'm not going to touch my Browning. P.O. put his social on it, but other than that, it's original. I will probably never sell it do to sentimental value of sweet 16's between my Dad and me.

XC, Does that Baretta shoot 3" steel? I may be interested if it does, at least shoot 3".
That's good on the 16. Yes the Beretta will shoot 3" steel all day long.

If you can get pics I may consider it.

As for the comments on a cheap gun always being cheap or trouble....hell the more moving parts the more there is to go wrong. I have 2 70 dollar single shots that have never been any kind of trouble. Nor have I ever had trouble with my cheap mossberg 500, well other then ice building up on the forearm and causing me to loose my grip!

I'll talk to him and see what he wants for it and get him to send me some pics

Red Labels aren't anywhere near cheap O/U any more. Pretty much the same tags as the Beretta and Browning.

As much as I hate to say this, as I'm not really a fan of low $ O/U's, check out the Remington Spartan. It's made in Russia and is actually a fairly solid gun. Also look into Traditions.

Really not a fan of anything Charles Daily makes after seeing a firing pin break on an auto and fire off the shell with the chamber open when it picked up the second round out of the magazine. It literally impaled the shell when it started to close the action. Luckily nobody was to the gentleman's left when it happened or pellet removal from face would have been necessary.

If I were you I'd get the Mossberg 835. You can go hunting with it and shoot all day long because it only dings the primers. On a good note you will be very good at cleaning guns after owning one. Because if you don't clean it, it won't work. Another good idea they came up with is having a little slot right by the bolt, perfect spot for seeds to fall into. Then you can go home and see what kind of plants the birds hang out in and go plant fields with all the seeds you have collected in your gun.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Just talked to my Bro and he's decided to keep that one and give it to his son when he's a little older.

Sorry

More power to you if you want to shoot a cheaper gun, but my Benelli that fits me perfectly will out shoot your cheap gun any day of the week-well come on over, you shot the benelli and I'll even go one further. I'll let you pick either my 70 dollar single shot or the old remi semi that was left in my house when I bought it...probably get 60 bucks at auction or the pawn shop for it.

the guys shooting top level skeet and trap aren't there because of the gun, they are there cause they can shoot lights out. Just so happens nobody is gonna tell Benellis to stick it if they offer you a gun.

So maybe I don't have a 50 lb. beer gut to help me soak up recoil... not all of us are so "blessed". Recoil costs time and when you live where the birds aren't endless, you have to make the most of your chances.

aww but an auto needs recoil. MN doesn't have plentiful birds but I'll take ya on some nice diver hunts if you make it this way.

Truth is, when birds are flying it don't matter what you shot as long as you do!!! And it's true I'm only 135 in my birthday suit.

you havn't shot a shot gun untill you shoot a benelli super sport 2. zero recoil and the gun doesn't move at all when you shoot do to the ported barrel. light as a feather too. but they are loud.

FYI on the Wally World and CD stuff, I went by my last local Wal Mart that carries guns (seems Wal Mart is going tree hugger around here). They have a sign up that they will no longer repair guns - go see the Man. for repairs and warranty work. Might affect some of your decisions.

Dude wasn't he talking about the 870 having to much recoil? It's a pump not an auto.

Met many of out of staters tell me how good their benelli & Beretta are. Funny thing is it doesn't make them shoot that first shot any faster or any more accurate. In fact watched many unload only to shoot holes in the sky, if they get their guns up at all before I shoot. I shoot an 870, A-5 and Model 12. Sure a beretta or benelli would be nice. But i have yet a need to change bait when I'm still killing efficiently.
