Shotgun for Pheasant and/or ducks

Benelli Nova... x 3

Had an 870 12 gauge... didn't like the way it fit me, recoiled harder, and wasn't all that reliable. My 20 gauge 870 is great, so I don't know what the difference is.

But, I can't say enough good things about the Nova. It rocks!:beer;

I'd keep that 94 as well....dang good gun. Shop the pawn shops for a used 870 and you won't be mad.

I'm waiting on a Smith someday as well....12 gauge and it shots dang nice. Now if only I hunted pheasents.

ABSOLUTELY do NOT do any work to that 16 unless it's just changing the ring stack. Any work done that is not just an adjustment will greatly devalue a good collector piece depending on current condition. Also don't shoot steel through it either. If you decide it's your only option PM me and I'll buy it off you if it isn't already altered in some way and you can get what you want for a waterfowl gun. Seriously.

As for a cheap and solid duck gun I would recommend the 870 or the Nova you could also throw the browning BPS in that group for a little more $$ but IMHO I don't think it's worth it. If you shoot your A5 well then you most likely won't shoot the 870 that well as the comb and cast of the stocks are quite different. Check with your hunting partners and shoot anything you can get your hands on to see what fits you best out of the box.

Oh and by the way my brother just picked up a Beretta pintail that's fairly beat up but got it way cheap and he may be interested in selling it if you are interested. This makes number 3 for him and I have 1 and traded off another one of them. They're a very reliable and solid auto. The only reason he bought it was the deal he got on it so if your interested let me know and I'll see how much he wants for it.

i don't know alot on cheap guns but i'am on my 2nd season with a beneli super sport 2. and it's a dream.

Does that Beretta "exist"? I maybe interested if it's in MN, which i see you no longer are. Lucky SOB!!

When it comes to any firearm, you get what you pay for. For semi-autos I shoot Benelli's. For pumps I prefer a Remington 870 preferably Wingmasters, though the Express is nice for a less expensive gun. I used to have a Browning BPS, it was nice though would screw up ejecting shells sometimes. I was disapointed that it was made in Japan. I still want to shoot the new Remington Model 105CTi. I would like to see how it compares to a Benelli or Beretta. If you buy something cheap, you can expect to have an unreliable cheap firearm most of the time.

They still exist, just not produced anymore. They're a sweet shooting auto, based off the original Benelli design. Oh and yeah he's in Bemidji. I'm coming back for Turkey day and could work something out if your interested. Let me know I'll give him a call and get you some pics.

Like I said he has 3 of them now and I have 1 and had a second that I picked up real cheap from a dude that needed cash, so I traded it on my 390 about 10 years ago and made up a little extra on the deal.

It's surprising if you comb the pawn shops you can find them fairly cheap from time to time as they don't know what they have. they retailed for $650 and to help the confusion issue with them they were sold under 2 names Pintail and Vitoria.

sorry about the Hyjacking.

Thanks for the advice guys. Don't worry, I'm not going to touch my Browning. P.O. put his social on it, but other than that, it's original. I will probably never sell it do to sentimental value of sweet 16's between my Dad and me.

XC, Does that Baretta shoot 3" steel? I may be interested if it does, at least shoot 3".

I'm still on the fence on the 94. It's a great gun, but not much good out west. It was perfect for whitetail back home in Alabama. I've got a .308 Browning BAR that my Grandfather gave me which I use for deer and elk out here. Good for 200 yards, as far as I feel comfortable shooting.

I may sell some other stuff and try to keep my Winchester, but with 9 long guns, I'm getting to the point of almost too many.

If you can get pics I may consider it.

As for the comments on a cheap gun always being cheap or trouble....hell the more moving parts the more there is to go wrong. I have 2 70 dollar single shots that have never been any kind of trouble. Nor have I ever had trouble with my cheap mossberg 500, well other then ice building up on the forearm and causing me to loose my grip!

I've got an old Mossberg 500 "farm gun" too. Beat to he!! but it's never misfired or let me down either. Going to get an 870 this year, too, because I've never heard anything but good about them.

870 will be my next gun....not sure why I always wanted an 870 express and my dad bought me the 500 for graduation instead. Still don't know why i want the 870, the 500 is flawless(minus dings i put in it).

If anyone is a grouse chaser and looking for a good timber gun look at the 870 express 20 guage youth model!!! Holy nice batman.

You may never have problems with a cheaper gun, but the quality isn't close to nicer firearms. That single shot still has springs and a firing pin to operate which aren't close to the quaility of a more expensive firearm. Then when you get into fit and finish they are inferior. More power to you if you want to shoot a cheaper gun, but my Benelli that fits me perfectly will out shoot your cheap gun any day of the week. Champion skeet or trap shooters shotguns are very expensive and they are designed to fit the shooter perfectly. That is why you see them shooting over and unders and very nice semi-autos.

i've been in the market for a Turkey gun this year... only two I'll consider after firing several are the Rem 870 SPS ShurShot Turkey Gun and the Benelli Super Black Eagle II Turkey... no other guns hold much interest to me as I find them a bit cantankerous and clumsy feeling, i've owned an 870 in the past, dead nuts reliable, bang for the buck its tough to beat, Benelli is the only other one that feels right to me...

recoiled harder....did your skirt billow up in the blind too?

So maybe I don't have a 50 lb. beer gut to help me soak up recoil... not all of us are so "blessed". Recoil costs time and when you live where the birds aren't endless, you have to make the most of your chances.

Don't let xrated get to you, he only weighs 130 soaking wet. I have a shotgun that he can shoot that will not only make his skirt billow up, but will make the pee run down his leg as well.:D:eek:

Got a Light Twelve about the same year myself. Still kills fine. I've owned an 870 Super Express Synthetic since they came out with the 3 1/2 chaimber. I havn't cleaned it very often and have used it on dove, pheasants, ducks, geese and Turkey. Have yet to have a malfunction. Great gun.
